I guess we could. But we would still need to have a list of plugins that
we don't want in vlc-nox but in vlc somewhere. For example, the
visulization plugins and the XDG screensever plugin do not link against
libX11 or libxcb and are placed in vlc. They do not make sense in
vlc-nox.

Dear Mira, dear maintainers,

Thank you for your answer. It's been a couple of years I'm using Debian and
I'm very interested in the project. Being maintainer sounds thus good, what
is the process for that?

What will I have to do? I could package Polyphone and also the sfArkLib in
a first step (it has been asked in the review of my package). Then, I'm a
user of the great software jOrgan, which has an RFP (
https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=666164). I could try to
package it as well.

How much packages am I supposed to maintain?

And I understand that each maintainer is volonteer and that we should
bother them as less as possible, but as I'm quite a newbie I'm likely to
have some questions. Where can I get some help if I need? What happened if
I maintain a package and that I can't find a solution for a problem?

 Hello Davy,

It's been quite some time that I want to make Polyphone available in the
 Debian repositories.

Polyphone is a soundfont editor like Swami and have these features:
  - support for sf2 files, version 2.01 and 2.04,
  - emphasis on ergonomics,
  - support for sfArk files (versions 2 and 1 also),
  - support for sfz files,
  - tools to automate instrument and preset settings (allow huge files to
 be easily handled),
  - available for Windows and Mac OS X.

More information about this software can be found here:
 www.polyphone.fr

I am the author of this software and the package should be ready:
 https://mentors.debian.net/package/polyphone

Polyphone is an alternative to Swami, that is why I am also sending this
email directly to Jaromir Mikes who is the maintainer of Swami.

Unfortunately I am not DD (Debian developer) just DM (Debian maintainer)
thus I can't upload new packages.

But anyway my advice is to join pkg-multimedia team package perfectly fit
 to it.

It would much easier for me to help you with if you will be packaging in
 team's repo.

I also believe that you will find easier DD uploader among team members.

 best regards

Hi Sebastian,

I don't mind this bug being closed if you think it isn't worth fixing.

Just for the record, this is not an artefact of packages.debian.org -
taking a look at the debian/control file for the binary vlc-nox package
in sid, you can see that...

1. dependencies are listed on libavcodec55 plus most or all of the
dependencies of libavcodec55, which is unnecessary, since depending on
libavcodec55 should be enough.

2. there is a Pre-Depends: dpkg (= 1.15.6~) which should no longer be
required, since all versions of dpkg currently available in Debian are
newer than this.

No, dropping these dependencies would be wrong. For two reasons:

 - If the vlc plugin linking against libfoo uses something from libfoo only
available in (= 2) but libavcodec55 does only depend on libfoo (= 1), then
the libavcodec55 dependency is not enough.
 - If libavodec55 suddenly drops the dependency, vlc is broken.

That's why relying on transitive dependencies is bad and wrong.

Yes, we'll drop that when we come to it.

For 3rd party programs using libvlc, an idea was to do a vlc-plugins
splitted from vlc, so that they don't get libQt in.
  So, something like:
   - libvlccore
   - libvlc
   - vlc-core-plugins
   - vlc

I'll see if I can come up with something here and prototype a possible
split. As soon as I've got something, I'll post a link to a branch.

 I've pushed a work-in-progress feature/vlc-plugins branch [1]. vlc-nox
has been left alive. Looking at the popcon data there seems to be
interest in the package (vlc: 51349 installs vs. vlc-nox: 53687
 installs).

The problem I initially experienced was how to come up with commits
such as
http://anonscm.debian.org/cgit/pkg-multimedia/vlc.git/commit/?h=feature/vlc-pluginsid=3909306d196dff05726cf3c800fa62bf2f8e7ad8
without spending hours trying to figure out what renames, additions
and removals of vlc plugins happend upstream. I started with a hit and
miss, but after 5 recompilations of VLC *sic* I got tired of failing
builds at package assembly time and started to grep and diff
buildlogs. I am therefore wondering if that effort is really worth the
trouble. I seems that you think it is. OK. Maybe I can come up with
scripts to grep the build logs to streamline this process.

 I've done the following instead:

  - Improved the check if plugins in vlc-nox link against libX11 or
libxcb.

http://anonscm.debian.org/cgit/pkg-multimedia/vlc.git/commit/?h=feature/vlc-pluginsid=318ef48b70b3cb2d2f85755766418eb97f7bf5a8

Awesome, that makes very much sense to me!

  - Moved the RDP plugin to vlc as it is linked to libX11 via
libfreerdp1.

Yes.

  - Killed vlc-plugin-pulse and moved the PulseAudio plugins to vlc.
Xfce, KDE and Gnome all pull in libpulse0 anyway, so I think there is
no need for the split.

I don't have a strong opinion on this. I feel that users might
complain, but we can surely wait for those bug reports to happen (if
they happen)

  - Added vlc-plugin-samba package and moved the Samba plugin there. I
think it makes much more sense to split this from vlc-nox (~50 MiB of
extra dependencies) and it's been requested.

Yikes! - That makes very much sense to me.

The vlc-plugin-samba and vlc-plugin-pulse changes can be reverted of
course if they are to controversial. The other changes should make it
possible to handle the plugin split a bit better for the time being. I
think it's better to revisit this after the jessie release and get vlc
ready for the libav transition for now.

Let me know what you think.

Awesome work, thank you very much!

The only piece that I'm missing is what Fabian mentioned: A more
declarative way to describe what plugin goes to vlc-nox and what to
vlc. See above.

Given that vlc is currently in NEW anyway, I guess uploading to
unstable as 2.2.0~pre2-2 would hurt.

Best,
Reinhard

Yes, that part is really annoying. Thinking about it a little bit more, a script
would be doable. I'll implement something that

 1. correctly installs the plugins into vlc and vlc-nox respecting their
dependencies
 2. takes a list of plugins that we want to have specifically in vlc (like the
 visulization plugins).

I'd like to postpone that until a -3 upload.

   - Killed vlc-plugin-pulse and moved the PulseAudio plugins to vlc.
Xfce, KDE and Gnome all pull in libpulse0 anyway, so I think there is
 no need for the split.

I don't have a strong opinion on this. I feel that users might

In the worst case I'll revert it. But given that vlc depends on libpulse0 (via
libsdl1.2debian) even without intalling vlc-plugin-pulse, I doubt there will be
many complaints (I might be wrong of course).

Given that vlc is currently in NEW anyway, I guess uploading to
 unstable as 2.2.0~pre2-2 would hurt.

As clarified on IRC, this should haven wouldn't hurt. I'll upload -2 tonight.

Re: MapMap: need help with CDBS, Qmake and debian/install rules

2014-08-19 Thread Alexandre Quessy
Hello everyone,

2014-08-16 16:38 GMT-04:00 Alexandre Quessy alexan...@quessy.net:

 Hello everyone,
I am currently doing some efforts to package my MapMap video mapping
application for Ubuntu. Once this is done, I will happily contribute this
to Debian! I am one of the upstream authors. MapMap is a Qt4 (or Qt5)
application written in C++ and packaged with qmake. I use use CDBS to
debianize this package. Now, I think I have only one problem left:

The mapmap binary and the mapmap.desktop desktop file are not
 included in the Ubuntu package!

Now, some technical details: I tried both to install the files that are
relative to the root, and the pseudo-installed files. The files built by
qt4-qmake should be installed in /usr/bin and /usr/share/applications,
thanks to my patch. (see below) For some reason, in both cases it doesn't
 work.

 The upstream .pro file:
 https://github.com/mapmapteam/ubuntu-mapmap/blob/master/mapmap.pro

And a patch I apply to fix the upstream .pro file:
 https://github.com/mapmapteam/ubuntu-mapmap
 /blob/master/debian/patches/0001-installs.diff

 The debian/install File:
 https://github.com/mapmapteam/ubuntu-mapmap/blob/master/debian/install

 A failed build:
 https://launchpad.net/~mapmap/+archive/ubuntu/mapmap/+build/6251747

 Our PPA:
 https://launchpad.net/~mapmap/+archive/ubuntu/mapmap

How to add our Ubuntu PPA and install MapMap:
   sudo add-apt-repository -y ppa:mapmap/mapmap
   sudo apt-get update
   sudo apt-get install -y mapmap

Any help or suggestion is welcome,
Once this is fixed, I will upload it to Alioth.debian.org. :)

Maybe I should simply upload it to Alioth.debian.org, in a new mapmap
repository, owned by this team?

Best,

Hi Aron,

from the discussion in [1] I learned that mplayer doesn't support to play midi
files and according to [2] one needs to add xmms plugins to mplayer to get
support. So I propose to drop audio/midi from the list of supported mime types
in gnome-mplayer.desktop as the default configuration clearly doesn't support
it.

Please let me know what you think of this. If you're okay with this change I'll
add the bug numbers to the changelog and commit it.

Cheers

I'm sorry for the long time it took to answer to your bug report. I'm
currently going through some old reports and wanted to ask if you if you
still experience this issue with recent versions of vlc.

Cheers

Bug#735447: in vlc audio is sometimes there, sometimes not there

 Dear Remi,
Thank you for following it up. This is not just with one source file
but with many. The best way for me to reproduce this is to load any
video media file in vlc, forward the media file sometime and then see
 pulseaudio lose the audio.

This has been happening for months. I am on testing with all updates
 and still have the issue.

P.S. :- For some reason the bts didn't tell me that somebody has
responded to the bug hence NOW subscribing to my own bug report. I
just got to my bug-report on the off-chance that there might be
something I might have left out.

Bug#673326: vlc: playlist information is incorrect when going up a tree level

Hi Vincent

Playlist information, displayed just below the menu, is incorrect in
some cases. For instance, concerning a playlist tree of the following
 form:

 index.xspf
   * file1.xspf
   * file2.xspf
   * file.ogg

when file.ogg is reached after file2.xspf has entirely been played,
 VLC still displays:

   Playlist → index.xspf → file2_title

while one is no longer in file2.xspf. It should have displayed:

   Playlist → index.xspf

Is this still an issue with vlc 2.1.5-1? It would also be nice if you
could test it with vlc 2.2.0 once it's through NEW.

Cheers

Dear Maintainer,

I use mumudvb on my LAN when i want to watch DVB-T television. I start
mumudvb -stdc some_dvbt-mux-configuration on the other pc and i use this pc
(a notebook) to view the udp multicast
stream via vlc.
The command i use is: vlc udp://@239.100.0.2:1234 launched on a xfce4-
terminal.

Vlc crashes often when playing such a stream. That DVB-T is from tv
broadcasting in Italy (often RAI, RAdio-televisione Italiana).
Last crash happened after zirca 10 or 20 minutes since the launch of the
command.
I only have a Segmentation Fault on the xfce4-terminal command line (there
are no syslog message at all about this).

here is the complete debug message of that crash:

Package: vlc
Version: 2.0.1-4

I have just installed Debian testing (wheezy) amd64 on May 1, 2012.

uname -a gives:

Linux c-76-111-67-198 3.2.0-2-amd64 #1 SMP Sun Apr 15 16:47:38 UTC 2012
x86_64 GNU/Linux

vlc hangs at the start of certain video files when the file is played. I
got the output at the end of this file using vlc -vv. I had to use
kill -9 to get rid of the vlc process.

My machine does not have any speakers.

At the advice of the vlc webpage, I deleted
  ~/.config/vlc/vlcrc
The hang was the same before and after deleting vlcrc.

The other config file is ~/.config/vlc/vlc-qt-interface.conf which contains:

minidlna. I'll try removing all dmo-packages soon.

Have you had the time to test this with the version from the Debian

   I remember the idea.

Basically, the idea was to split so that servers using VLC to do
streaming wouldn't need libX11 and all the rest.

otherwise I'd expect the Makefiles to be a bit more helpful with
determining this. J-B, I'd like you to confirm if I'm right here.

This idea indeed failed, because libavcodec, one of the main codec
library, can depend on vdpau/vaapi, and both of those acceleration
libraries thought it was cool to use libX11...
   Therefore, a vlc-noX wouldn't have avcodec plugin...

Some other distributions split the VLC free-stack (Xiph formats)
from the rest, for patent reasons.

Looking at the popcon data there seems to be
interest in the package (vlc: 51349 installs vs. vlc-nox: 53687
installs). I've done the following instead:

  - Improved the check if plugins in vlc-nox link against libX11 or
libxcb.
  - Moved the RDP plugin to vlc as it is linked to libX11 via
libfreerdp1.
  - Killed vlc-plugin-pulse and moved the PulseAudio plugins to vlc.
Xfce, KDE and Gnome all pull in libpulse0 anyway, so I think there is
no need for the split.
  - Added vlc-plugin-samba package and moved the Samba plugin there. I
think it makes much more sense to split this from vlc-nox (~50 MiB of
extra dependencies) and it's been requested.

For the record: +1 for moving vlc-plugin-pulse into vlc and splitting
Samba into vlc-plugin-samba.

Bug#758684: browser-plugin-vlc: video/quicktime plugin not always working

2014-08-19 Thread Saint Germain
Package: browser-plugin-vlc
Version: 2.0.6-4
Severity: important

Dear Maintainer,

With Iceweasel 31.0-3 and vlc 2.1.5-1 I cannot always play QuickTime
videos (supposed to work since #694526 is closed). For instance on
apple.com/trailers, when I try to play some videos, I am offered to
download the QuickTime plugin. However on
http://mac.sillydog.org/qt/mov/embed_s3.php, I can play the video.

In the Iceweasel about:plugins page, I have:
video/quicktime QuickTime video mov,qt

And in the Iceweasel Preferences page I have:
video QuickTime Use VLC Web Plugin (in Iceweasel)

I tried to restart in Iceweasel safe mode, but there is no improvement.

I tried with gecko-mediaplayer and the QuickTime videos play fine.

Greetings Dearest Beloved,

2014-08-19 Thread Rosalin
Greetings Dearest Beloved,

I am divinely touched to offer my fortune to less privilege.
I am a childless widow and as a result of my present situation I have nothing
in mind
other than to help the poor according to God direction and wishes.
I reached you by the special grace of God through email because I can not speak
to your
understanding on telephone due to my sickness.
I am suffering from esophageal cancer for years now and have undergone series
of cancer
treatments but no avail.

Recently my doctor declared that I have shorter days to live. Likewise from my
daily
health report it is also clear to me that I have but little time to pass
on,therefore I
wish to offer you my fortune US$6,200,000.00 to take care of charity work in
favour of
less privileges in your country.
the money will go to the charity work.
I have come up with a great confidence for your trust conduct over this solemn
work of God
after many prayers.

As soon as I receive your reply I will give you the address of my bank and also
instruct
them for the release of the money to you for the charity work.
But I only wished to have your assurance that you will utilise the money as I
have said.
I have great interest for the welfare of the less privilege because i was once
an orphan
and will not be happy if any thing comes contrary against the charity work.
Please remember my situation in your daily prayers.
Hoping to receive your reply soon.
Yours Sick Sister,
Mrs. Rosaline Spagnolo
