Have you tried turning hardware acceleration off?
I'm currently seeing VLC crash with the same stack trace when trying to
play HDTV recordings (1920x1080). But not with standard definition TV.
With the same files, xine's UI locks up ignoring input (but the video
keeps playing) when skipping through the file.
Turning off hardware video acceleration has stopped the problems in both
VLC and Xine for me. In both programs I'm turning it off via the GUI
options.
I'm using a Radeon graphics card (lspci info below).
