Bug#884956: vlc: icons are too big

2017-12-21 Thread Vincent Lefevre
Package: src:vlc
Version: 3.0.0~rc2-1
Severity: minor

Icons appear to be too big (much bigger than the associated text).
I don't think this is intentional. VLC 2.x didn't have such a problem.

I've attached a screenshot of a part of the main window.

Just in case this matters, the configured Xft.dpi is 132, and I can
see in ".config/vlc/vlc-qt-interface.conf", in particular:

[FullScreen]
pos=@Point(1200 1732)
screen=@Rect(0 0 3200 1800)

adv-controls=0
bgSize=@Size(100 30)

Bug#884953: vlc: bad window redraw: black lines

2017-12-21 Thread Vincent Lefevre
Package: src:vlc
Version: 3.0.0~rc2-1
Severity: normal

When I move a window over a VLC window (such as its main window or the
Help window), either from right to left or from bottom to top (but not
in the other direction), I get black lines (vertical in the former
case, horizontal in the latter case).

I've attached a screenshot showing the problem.

Oops, I meant the /etc/fonts/conf.d/70-no-bitmaps.conf symbolic link.

This is also fine with inkscape 0.48.5-3 on a Debian/jessie machine,
where I also get:

$ fc-match Helvetica
texgyreheros-regular.otf: "TeX Gyre Heros" "Regular"

(with or without my ~/.config/fontconfig/fonts.conf file).

I've now found how to reproduce the bug: remove the
/etc/fonts/70-no-bitmaps.conf file, so that one gets:

$ fc-match Helvetica
helvR12-ISO8859-1.pcf.gz: "Helvetica" "Regular"

I cannot reproduce the bug on a new machine with inkscape 0.91-12,
i.e. the SVG file looks fine in inkscape, whether I use my
~/.config/fontconfig/fonts.conf file or not.

In case this matters, I now have:

$ fc-match Helvetica
texgyreheros-regular.otf: "TeX Gyre Heros" "Regular"

If I remove the fonts-texgyre package, I get:

$ fc-match Helvetica
qhvr.pfb: "TeXGyreHeros" "Regular"

and the SVG file is still OK in inkscape.

So, either this has been fixed in inkscape, or something significant
has changed on the system (e.g. in fontconfig). I suppose that this
bug should be closed.

Bug#813545: vlc: freeze followed by segmentation fault after closing the window

2016-02-02 Thread Vincent Lefevre
Package: src:vlc
Version: 2.2.2-1
Severity: important

After I close the window, VLC froze then crashed (segmentation fault).
I could reproduce this problem another time, but that's all. This never
occurred with previous versions.

Program terminated with signal SIGSEGV, Segmentation fault.

Bug#813543: vlc: doesn't output any sound

2016-02-02 Thread Vincent Lefevre
Package: src:vlc
Version: 2.2.2-1
Severity: grave
Justification: renders package unusable

After the upgrade to 2.2.2, VLC no longer outputs any sound. This is
specific to VLC as there is no such problem with ogg123, for instance.

I suspect a major problem with VLC 2.2.2 since it also segfaults. I'm
going to report another bug about this (I don't know whether this is
related).

Downgrading the VLC packages to 2.2.1-5+b3 doesn't solve the problem.
In the logs, I can find errors like:

Bug#813543: vlc: doesn't output any sound

Control: retitle -1 pulseaudio: [alsa-sink-ALC3228 Analog] alsa-sink.c: Error

Firefox also had problems.

After logging out and logging in, vlc works again. So, it seems to
be a problem with the pulseaudio daemon. Reassigning.

Bug#807528: vlc: after some time, clicks on the root window no longer work

2015-12-10 Thread Vincent Lefevre
On 2015-12-10 10:34:01 +0100, Sebastian Ramacher wrote:
> Are you that this is a bug in vlc and not Qt 5, your window manager
> or X.Org?

I don't know. I'm on another machine, and the problem is reproducible
on it. Since the mouse is attached on the USB hub of the screen, I can
do this either by unplugging the mouse USB cable or by switching off
the screen and back on. In the latter case, if I do this while the
VLC window isn't visible (I'm on another desktop page) and go to the
VLC page again, the VLC window contains garbage, and if I click on it,
VLC crashes (segmentation fault) in QXcbScreen::mapFromNative in
libQt5XcbQpa.so.5.5.1 (I can give more details later). Should I report
a new bug for this?

> Are you able to reproduce the issue with a USB mouse with a

Yes, and even on a different machine (see above).

> In any case, this is missing logs from vlc and probably X.Org and dmesg.

In X.org log, something like:

[259110.094] (II) config/udev: removing device Logitech USB Optical Mouse
[259110.108] (II) evdev: Logitech USB Optical Mouse: Close
[259110.108] (II) UnloadModule: "evdev"

Ditto on the other machine.

dmesg output:

2015-12-09 Thread Vincent Lefevre
Package: vlc
Version: 2.2.1-5+b1
Severity: normal

After some time, clicks on the root window no longer work. VLC is
the cause of this problem because as soon as I quit VLC, clicks on
the root window work again.

I now remember that everytime this problem occurred, a USB mouse was
disconnected. So, this may be related.

Note: the machine is a laptop.
  * After disconnecting the USB mouse, the buttons of the touchpad
have no effect over the root window.
  * After disconnecting the USB mouse and reconnecting it[*], the
buttons of this USB mouse have no effect over the root window.
In both cases, the problem disappeared just after quitting VLC.

[*] This actually occurred due to a problem with a USB cable.
I had already mentioned the issue related to VLC here:

I'm wasting my time trying to find a screensaver with minimal
dependencies and that works with vlc (at least xscreensaver
doesn't work).

For the xdg-screensaver fallback, this discussion is best taken upstream.

I've posted a message here:

I've also reported a bug concerning the screen blinking problem with
xset dpms force on (though executing this periodically just to avoid
DPMS screen blanking is a hack):

(Unfortunately, bugs in nouveau can remain for years.)

Bug#792830: vlc: playing tree playlist stops at the end of a branch when Auto start is disabled and the next branch has not been not unfolded

2015-07-18 Thread Vincent Lefevre
Package: vlc
Version: 2.2.1-2+b1
Severity: normal

Assume that the Auto start playlist option is disabled and
Display playlist tree is enabled. Consider a playlist with
at least two branches. Something like:

?xml version=1.0 encoding=utf-8?
playlist xmlns=http://xspf.org/ns/0/; version=1
  trackList
track
  locationfile:///.../file1.xspf/location
  titlefile1/title
/track
track
  locationfile:///.../file2.xspf/location
  titlefile2/title
/track
  /trackList
/playlist

Open the playlist. For file1, select its last item. Once it is played,
VLC stops instead of going on with file2. This problem doesn't occur
when the Auto start playlist option is enabled (default). It doesn't
occur either if file2 was unfolded (by double-clicking on it) before
playing the last item of file1.

Bug#792538: vlc: When playing a video, screen gets black for a fraction of second every 30 seconds

2015-07-15 Thread Vincent Lefevre
Package: vlc
Version: 2.2.1-2+b1
Severity: important

When playing a video (I've tried both MP4 and OGG), the screen gets
black for a fraction of second every 30 seconds: at 0:00 (not always),
0:29, 0:59, 1:29, etc. This also occurs even when the VLC window is
completely off-screen.

As an example (video randomly taken on Wikimedia commons):

https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/6/64/1_hour_Wilhelmshoeher_Allee.ogg

original file taken from:

  https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:1_hour_Wilhelmshoeher_Allee.ogg

But this seems to occur with every video, and this seems to be always
reproducible.

The fraction of second is very short. Sometimes the whole screen is
affected, sometimes only the bottom part.

I've attached vlc -vvv ... output.

Bug#792538: vlc: When playing a video, screen gets black for a fraction of second every 30 seconds

2015-07-15 Thread Vincent Lefevre
Something else interesting:

If I pause the video (I mean pause by clicking on the || button,
not stop), then the same problem still occurs every 30 seconds.

Bug#792133: vlc: doesn't honor the locales for Date Modified in file chooser

2015-07-11 Thread Vincent Lefevre
Package: vlc
Version: 2.2.1-2+b1
Severity: normal

VLC doesn't honor the locales for Date Modified in file chooser
(e.g. with Media → OpenFile...). The Date Modified column contains
the date in US format, which is very misleading.

What are the values of your LC_* and LANG environment variables?

This seems to be specific to en_DK, reproducible with LC_ALL=en_DK
(FYI, en_DK is the recommended way to get an ISO 8601 date with
the English language).

There are similar problems with en_CA and fr_CA, e.g. compared
to date +%x for the date.

I have the same problem with bino, which also depends on libqt5widgets5
(which provides the file chooser?). So, perhaps it's a bug in some part
of Qt 5.

 Do you have qttranslations5-l10n installed?

Yes (qttranslations5-l10n 5.4.2-2).

Note that since the date is numeric, translations shouldn't even
matter.

I can reproduce the crash by doing:

sample.webm

then doing vlc sample.webm, setting the speed to 3x, then doing a
sequence of stop/play. This doesn't always yield a crash. I sometimes
need to do Ctrl-C and try again several times.

Nope, cannot get it to crash.

This may depend on some context. For the first time on my machine,
vlc Nosferatu_a_Venezia_-_Pelicula_Completa_audio_espa_ol.webm
crashed almost immediately, i.e. at normal speed!

Please also include the output of vlc -vvv.

The cause may be that I have the libmtp library installed in

been broken for years:

(though that's a long time I have not tried).

Bug#776172: vlc: crash (segmentation fault) on a webm file

2015-02-14 Thread Vincent Lefevre
On 2015-02-14 16:20:39 +0100, Sebastian Ramacher wrote:
I can't reproduce it. I've tried to play the URL directly with vlc,
downloaded it with youtube-dl and downloaded the webm. It never crashed
on normal speed or higher speed.

I could reproduce it by setting the speed to 3x and the start time
position to 00:00:06, but it doesn't always crash. It seems that
the VLC behavior is not deterministic!

I could also reproduce the crash by resetting to position to 00:00:00
(or clicking on stop/play), still at speed 3x.

The crash often occurs near 1:15. But it also occurred just after
I clicked on stop/play (i.e. just at the beginning of the file).

Another test: I start vlc Nosferatu*.webm, then select the 3x speed
via a click on the speed area at the bottom, then do a sequence of
stop/play until a crash. The first 3 times, VLC crashed immediately
after a play in the first 5 iterations. The 4th time, I did a
sequence of several dozens of stop/play, but couldn't make it crash.
The 5th time, VLC crashed at the 7th iteration. The 6th time, VLC
crashed at the 6th iteration.

So without a minimal sample that causes the clash,

Can VLC can extract a sample that caused the crash?

the traceback with -dbg packages installed and a verbose vlc log,
there is not much we can do.

Here's the full backtrace with the debugging symbols. The crash always
occurs in the same function.

Core was generated by `vlc
Nosferatu_a_Venezia_-_Pelicula_Completa_audio_espa_ol.webm'.

With the same test except by setting the speed to 2.00x or 1.50x,
I could reproduce the crash. But if I let the speed to 1.00x, I
couldn't reproduce the crash.

I couldn't reproduce the crash with it. But I could reproduce the crash
with VLC only be playing the file faster:

$ vlc Nosferatu_a_Venezia_-_Pelicula_Completa_audio_espa_ol.webm

then Playback → Speed → Faster, done 2 or 3 times. The crash occurs
almost immediately or no more than 20 seconds later.

Note: for some reason, I can't give you any information on the
webm file in question before a few days.

Well, let's us know once you can tell us more about the file …

It's the webm file downloaded from

  https://www.youtube.com/watch?html5=1v=BJj8twOFwkM
Nosferatu a Venezia - Pelicula Completa (audio español)

with DownloadHelper.

Note: I've tried with other Qt software, djview4 and serna, and in
both cases, when something is selected, the background is dark blue
(like with VLC), but the foreground text is white, while in VLC it is
black (thus unreadable). So, it seems to be a problem specific to VLC.

If you still think it is a problem with Qt, and not VLC, the bug
should be reassigned to the right Qt package, not closed.

Bug#673330: vlc: can't control the main window when the Preferences window is open

Well, modal dialogs are generally regarded as a very poor design.
There may be exceptions, but certainly not for a Preferences
dialog, which makes the UI more difficult to use, e.g. when
one wants to try different preferences.

Perhaps this bug could be retitled

vlc: the Preferences dialog shouldn't be modal

and lowered to wishlist. This should be a valid one.

Bug#692193: ffmpeg: description claims that ffmpeg is a transitional package, but it isn't

2012-11-03 Thread Vincent Lefevre
Package: ffmpeg
Version: 6:0.8.4-1
Severity: normal

The ffmpeg description is:

Description: Multimedia player, server, encoder and transcoder (transitional
package)

which is incorrect because the package provides the ffmpeg program
(and its man page). Removing a transitional package should be
completely safe, but here doing this breaks other software on the
machine (e.g. the DownloadHelper Firefox extension, which knows
about ffmpeg, but not avconv). Please use another word in the
package description such as obsolete.

Please do file bugs against packages that do not with avconv. Those bugs
will become RC as soon as the libav 9, which is currently in experimental,
reaches unstable. This will happen shortly after wheezy release.

Unfortunately, not all software is provided as Debian packages (in
particular, Firefox extensions). It would be a bad idea to remove
ffmpeg without leaving time for the other developers to update
their software. FYI, I've just reported the bug for DownloadHelper:

  http://bugzilla.downloadhelper.net:8080/show_bug.cgi?id=467

The DownloadHelper conversion guide mentions Ubuntu concerning ffmpeg,
so that its developer should be concerned to what happens in Debian.

Also note that my main complaint was the wording in the package
description (due the transitional package term, I removed ffmpeg
several months ago, without knowing that it would remove a binary).

Bug#673325: vlc: unreadable black text on dark blue background

2012-05-17 Thread Vincent Lefevre
Package: vlc
Version: 2.0.1-4+b2

When selected, text of the main VLC window is unreadable as it is black
on a dark blue background. This makes VLC a bit uneasy to use.

The menus don't have this problem: the background is the same, but the
text appears in white (instead of black).

2012-05-17 Thread Vincent Lefevre

Playlist information, displayed just below the menu, is incorrect in
some cases. For instance, concerning a playlist tree of the following
form:

index.xspf

  * file2.xspf
  * file.ogg

when file.ogg is reached after file2.xspf has entirely been played,
VLC still displays:

  Playlist → index.xspf → file2_title

while one is no longer in file2.xspf. It should have displayed:

  Playlist → index.xspf

Bug#673333: vlc: logic for window position is broken: window is sometimes partly off-screen

2012-05-17 Thread Vincent Lefevre
Package: vlc
Version: 2.0.1-4+b2
Severity: normal

VLC's logic for the window position is broken, leading to a window that
is sometimes partly off-screen. Here's a way to reproduce the problem:

1. Make sure you have a long playlist open.
2. Make sure View → Docked Playlist is ticked.
3. Show the playlist (if not already done).
4. Maximize the window height.
5. No longer show the playlist (Ctrl-L).
6. Reduce the window height.
7. Show the playlist (Ctrl-L).

→ The window height is automatically increased and the window can be
partly off-screen. (A)

8. No longer show the playlist (Ctrl-L).
9. Move the window upward or downward.
10. Show the playlist (Ctrl-L).

→ The window height is automatically increased and the window can be
partly off-screen. (B)

Compared to (A), the window position has changed in the same way the
reduced window has changed in (9).

not interested in collaborating with pkg-multimedia at all. He also
does not seem interested in installing libraries in a way that they do
not interfere with 'official' Debian packages (e.g., by changing
SONAMES, or installing in private directories, etc.).

It's worse than that. Security support is non-existent, and users
don't know that. An example:

  http://lists.debian.org/debian-user-french/2010/08/msg6.html

where a user recommended flashplayer-mozilla from debian-multimedia
(debian-multimedia.org), saying that it was working very well. What
he didn't say (and there was no information on debian-multimedia.org
either), is that this was a version with critical vulnerabilities
known since June 2010:

Well, non-free in Debian proper doesn't have security support neither. But
then I guess one could argue that users at least know that this is the case,
 don't they?

No, the package was *not* a non-free package, it was in main.
I did the remark at that time:

  http://lists.debian.org/debian-user-french/2010/08/msg00082.html

So, again, this is really misleading for the end user.

Bug#640285: vlc has no copyright information (doc directory is empty)

2011-09-03 Thread Vincent Lefevre
Package: vlc
Version: 1.1.11-2+b3
Severity: serious
Justification: Policy 12.5

The Debian Policy Manual says:

Every package must be accompanied by a verbatim copy of its
copyright information and distribution license in the file
/usr/share/doc/package/copyright. This file must neither be
