Bug#692193: ffmpeg: description claims that ffmpeg is a transitional package, but it isn't

A symlink is not a good option as avconv and ffmpeg are not command-line compatible. Oh, I see: * ffmpeg package is available as part of libav 6:0.8.5-1, but removed from 6:9.3-1 (experimental); * ffplay, ffprobe ffserver are available (as symlinks to avplay, avplay avserver respectively) in libav-tools 6:0.8.5-1, but are removed from 6:9.3-1 (experimental). Well, the transition seems to be uniform, let it be. Bug#692193: ffmpeg: description claims that ffmpeg is a transitional package, but it isn't
Package: ffmpeg Version: 6:0.8.4-1 Severity: normal The ffmpeg description is: Description: Multimedia player, server, encoder and transcoder (transitional package) which is incorrect because the package provides the ffmpeg program (and its man page). Removing a transitional package should be completely safe, but here doing this breaks other software on the machine (e.g. the DownloadHelper Firefox extension, which knows about ffmpeg, but not avconv). Please use another word in the package description such as obsolete. -- System Information: Debian Release: wheezy/sid APT prefers unstable APT policy: (500, 'unstable'), (500, 'testing'), (500, 'stable'), (1, 'experimental') Architecture: amd64 (x86_64) Kernel: Linux 3.5-trunk-amd64 (SMP w/2 CPU cores) Locale: LANG=POSIX, LC_CTYPE=en_US.UTF-8 (charmap=UTF-8) Shell: /bin/sh linked to /bin/dash Versions of packages ffmpeg depends on: ii libav-tools6:0.8.4-1 ii libavcodec53 6:0.8.4-1 ii libavdevice53 6:0.8.4-1 ii libavfilter2 6:0.8.4-1 ii libavformat53 6:0.8.4-1 ii libavutil516:0.8.4-1 ii libc6 2.13-36 ii libpostproc52 6:0.8.4-1 ii libswscale26:0.8.4-1 ffmpeg recommends no packages. ffmpeg suggests no packages. -- no debconf information ___ pkg-multimedia-maintainers mailing list pkg-multimedia-maintainers@lists.alioth.debian.org http://lists.alioth.debian.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/pkg-multimedia-maintainers

It is provided only to support software that has not been ported yet to avconv. Please do file bugs against packages that do not with avconv. Those bugs will become RC as soon as the libav 9, which is currently in experimental, reaches unstable. Unfortunately, not all software is provided as Debian packages (in particular, Firefox extensions). It would be a bad idea to remove ffmpeg without leaving time for the other developers to update their software. FYI, I've just reported the bug for DownloadHelper: http://bugzilla.downloadhelper.net:8080/show_bug.cgi?id=467 The DownloadHelper conversion guide mentions Ubuntu concerning ffmpeg, so that its developer should be concerned to what happens in Debian. Also note that my main complaint was the wording in the package description (due the transitional package term, I removed ffmpeg several months ago, without knowing that it would remove a binary). -- Vincent Lefèvre vinc...@vinc17.net - Web: http://www.vinc17.net/ 100% accessible validated (X)HTML - Blog: http://www.vinc17.net/blog/ Work: CR INRIA - computer arithmetic / AriC project (LIP, ENS-Lyon) ___ pkg-multimedia-maintainers mailing list pkg-multimedia-maintainers@lists.alioth.debian.org http://lists.alioth.debian.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/pkg-multimedia-maintainers
