I could only reproduce this bug with a big table of 20,000,000 rows. That though makes this bug so evil as it might happen suddenly in production when the number of rows reaches a certain threshold. According to Tom Lane it's probably due to the "dummy selectivity estimation". If I understood correctly then he is referring to the "contsel" function from prefix.sql which always returns 0.001 which seems quite low but still give 20,000 rows for such big tables. But this is just a guess. The index was created as follows, but the additional gist_prefix_range_ops parameter does not seem to have any effect: CREATE INDEX destinations_nr_gist_idx ON destinations USING gist (nr gist_prefix_range_ops); The table is 3-4GB big and contains some million rows: devel=# ANALYZE VERBOSE destinations; INFO: analyzing "public.destinations" INFO: "destinations": scanned 3 of 196069 pages, containing 3205481 live rows and 441 dead rows; 3 rows in sample, 20948720 estimated total rows devel=# explain analyze SELECT prefix FROM destinations WHERE nr @> '22116804109' ORDER BY length(nr) desc; QUERY PLAN - Sort (cost=63182.14..63234.51 rows=20949 width=22) (actual time=0.277..0.278 rows=2 loops=1) Sort Key: (length(nr)) Sort Method: quicksort Memory: 25kB -> Bitmap Heap Scan on destinations (cost=817.08..61678.57 rows=20949 width=22) (actual time=0.264..0.269 rows=2 loops=1) Recheck Cond: (nr @> '22116804109'::prefix_range) -> Bitmap Index Scan on destinations_nr_gist_idx (cost=0.00..811.84 rows=20949 width=0) (actual time=0.253..0.253 rows=2 loops=1) Index Cond: (nr @> '22116804109'::prefix_range) Total runtime: 0.315 ms GOOD! devel=# explain analyze SELECT prefix FROM destinations WHERE nr @> '22116804109' ORDER BY length(nr) desc LIMIT 1; QUERY PLAN Limit (cost=0.00..3481.06 rows=1 width=22) (actual time=689.413..689.414 rows=1 loops=1) -> Index Scan Backward using destinations_nr_length_idx on destinations (cost=0.00..72924752.20 rows=20949 width=22) (actual time=689.410..689.410 rows=1 loops=1) Filter: (nr @> '22116804109'::prefix_range) Total runtime: 689.437 ms ^^ BAD! devel=# \d+ destinations; Table "public.destinations" Column|Type | Modifiers | Storage | Description -+-+---+--+ id | integer | not null default nextval('destinations_id_seq'::regclass) | plain| nr | prefix_range| not null | plain| prefix | text| not null

[Pkg-postgresql-public] Bug#915965: marked as done (postgresql-11: postgresql listens on non-default port number 5433)

Please contact ow...@bugs.debian.org immediately.) -- 915965: https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=915965 Debian Bug Tracking System Contact ow...@bugs.debian.org with problems --- Begin Message --- Package: postgresql-11 Version: 11.1-1+b2 Severity: important Dear Maintainer, after some recent upgrade (within the last couple months), postgresql seemingly switched from listening on port 5432 to listening on port 5433. I only found out because an application that used to work just fine suddenly stopped working and complained it could not find the unix domain socket it expected. I do not know why it now says "port = 5433" in my /etc/postgresql/11/main/postgresql.conf, but I know for sure that I did not change this configuration. According to etckeeper, this happened when I upgraded from postgresql-10 to postgresql-11, which happened automatically via dist-upgrade. (I had to manually uninstall postgresql-10 afterwards, but did not think much about that.) Debian not using the default port means that all sorts of applications and tutorials will just not work, and it can take a while for people not deeply familiar with postgres to figure out what is going on. And either way, changing the DB port without administrator intervention is claerly a bug. DB upgrades should not have side-effects like changing the DB port. Hi Ralf, the port was not "changed". The old 10 cluster kept running on 5432, and the newly installed 11 cluster got 5433 assigned. At that point, you probably transferred the data from the 10 to the 11 cluster manually. The proper "Debian" way to do that is via pg_upgradecluster, which will then also make sure that the upgraded cluster takes over the port of the original one. This is documented in /usr/share/doc/postgresql-common/README.Debian.gz Christoph--- End Message --- ___ pkg-postgresql-public mailing list pkg-postgresql-public@alioth-lists.debian.net https://alioth-lists.debian.net/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/pkg-postgresql-public

[Pkg-postgresql-public] Bug#908522: marked as done (python-dateutil breaks patroni autopkgtest)

It passes when run with only packages from testing. I copied some of the output at the bottom of this report. Currently this regression is contributing to the delay of the migration of python-dateutil to testing [1]. Due to the nature of this issue, I filed this bug report against both packages. Can you please investigate the situation and reassign the bug to the right package? If needed, please change the bug's severity. For reference of the patroni maintainers, bug 907718: "RRULE UNTIL values must be specified in UTC when DTSTART is timezone-aware" already exist against the python-dateutils package with multiple affected packages and multiple bugs blocking the "fix". I can't judge from the error logging if this is at all related. It seems that the maintainer scripts use "invoke-rc.d postgresql $action $version", and systemd happily ignores the spare $version argument. The postgresql-9.4 (and 9.6) prerm script calls "stop_version $VERSION" from /usr/share/postgresql-common/maintscripts-functions, which stops postgresql ("all clusters") if: [ -x /etc/init.d/postgresql ] && [ ! -x /etc/init.d/postgresql-$1 ] I only have /etc/init.d/postgresql, but no /etc/init.d/postgresql-*. This probably got lost with systemd. cheers, Stefan --- End Message --- --- Begin Message --- Source: postgresql-common Source-Version: 181+deb9u2 We believe that the bug you reported is fixed in the latest version of postgresql-common, which is due to be installed in the Debian FTP archive. IOW, the test MUST give a non-zero exit code for the test to fail. 2) The test "create-extension" runs a command in a shell loop without setting "set -e" or doing an "|| exit 1" after each command. A second iteration can override the exit code from the previous iteration. In the concrete case, the only case where 2) is an issue is if the tests is actually run in an environment with multiple supported postgres versions. Or (more likely) the test code is cargo-culted into another project where multiple iterations are more likely. While the "cargo-culting" project is certainly responsible in the latter case, we might as well kill the issue at the root. Findings d/tests/control: vvv """ Depends: @, postgresql-contrib-9.6, postgresql-9.6-powa Tests: create-extension Restrictions: allow-stderr """ I.e. stderr messages will not cause a failure. d/tests/create-extension: """ #!/bin/sh for v in $(pg_buildext supported-versions); do pg_virtualenv -v $v -o "shared_preload_libraries=powa,pg_stat_statements" \ psql <<-EOF CREATE EXTENSION pg_stat_statements; CREATE EXTENSION btree_gist; CREATE EXTENSION powa; EOF done """ Note the missing "set -e" or "|| exit" for the pg_virtualenv cmd. In the same spirit, I wonder if psql should be run with "-v ON_ERROR_STOP=1".
