The plethora of mini packages we have now isn't ideal. I just uploaded q3c as a single binary package. pgsphere will follow after some discussion with the main users (hi Markus :-) ) > My main concern is supporting upgrades cleanly. This can be addressed by introducing Postgresql-versioned Provides. If the q3c package would support f.e. 9.6 and 10, it can have Provides: postgresql-9.6-q3c, postgresql-10-q3c If you then need q3c for a specific version, you can install/depend on this specific version. This also allows a smooth transition between the multi-binary-package approach and the single binary package. This is already implemented in the uploaded version. > Maybe we could just claim that the user should upgrade their database > at the same time, and for many extensions this will not be a problem. > But for extensions providing datatypes (I think that includes q3c), > the .so module is needed for dumping the old data, so at least > dump-restore upgrades are affected. pg_upgrade should still work, > though. But, outside of ftpmaster hat, are you really > really sure you want native packages for something that isn't Debian > specific? :) The deeper problem here is that "have debian/ inside upstream's git tree" is really a pain, unless the package is format 1.0 or 3.0 (native). Otherwise, (likely non-debian-savvy) upstreams will have a hard time building packages from HEAD because each time there's a change outside debian/, the build will fail because it doesn't match the tarball. Maybe I should make pg-dirtyread source format 1.0, and have it build the diff against the latest tarball (which still exists even for 3.0 (native) because of the archive.tar.gzs from GitHub) like in the old days. I've traced the startup > code as far as pg_ctlcluster to where it looks like it's enforcing the > logging to /var/log, but i can't figure out how to get it to stop. The log file on disk is necessary in many configurations because only elog() is redirected to the configured log destination, while things that print directly to stderr (most frequent offender would be errors from an archive_command) would otherwise get lost. Also, that file logs errors that occur before the logging config has been activated, like syntax errors in postgresql.conf. I realize that setups that really just want to catch stderr to feed it elsewhere have a problem here. > And pg_ctlcluster seems to define the active logging to the filesystem > as part of the "start" subcommand :/ Maybe we should add a switch to pg_ctl.conf, catch_stderr = on/off. > How can i get it to not write to these logs?
