Subject: neverball: doesn't start if not using arts/kde
Package: neverball
Version: 1.4.0-1
Severity: serious
Justification: this bug should be gone in lenny

When trying to start nverball on a GNOME system without arts, neverball
fails:

0 [EMAIL PROTECTED] ~ $ neverball
ALSA lib pcm_dmix.c:864:(snd_pcm_dmix_open) unable to open slave
Creating link /home/eddy/.kde/socket-twix.
can't create mcop directory

This looks a lot like http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=396219
and I think the proper fix would be not to let an arts failure bring
down the entire game.

Known workaround is to create the ~/.kde/socket-`hostname -s` directory.

 Ditto for daemon.conf.

 /etc/default/pulseaudio has:

 PULSEAUDIO_SYSTEM_START=0

 DISALLOW_MODULE_LOADING=0

If you want to use pulseaudio then you need to setup your alsa to go through
pulseaudio. See:

  http://pulseaudio.org/wiki/PerfectSetup#ALSAApplications

The pulse alsa plugin can be found in libasound2-plugins.

I've just tested neverball, it seems to work fine.

Making the setup more automated is still on our todo list, but it has proven to
be quite tricky to get right.

Closing this bug as it's a user configuration error, not a bug in pulseaudio

Sorry, my bad.

Making the setup more automated is still on our todo list, but it has proven
 to
be quite tricky to get right.

Couldn't there be an option like '--migrate-to-pa' or an environment variable
that pulseaudio could
take into account to migrate/create the system/user configuration
automatically. By default it would
be set so migration is disabled.

So, when running pulseaudio for the first time (depending on the value of that
parameter) would make
the necessary changes to make pulse the default sound output using hal or
another alsa mixer (or
however is called), etc.

Wouldn't that work?

Just an idea.

Closing this bug as it's a user configuration error, not a bug in pulseaudio
