[DRE-maint] Bug#820065: gitlab: please adapt the postinst output for Debian

2016-04-04 Thread Johannes Schauer
Package: gitlab
Version: 8.5.8+dfsg-3
Severity: wishlist

Hi,

when upgrading gitlab, the user might be presented with stanzas like
this:

 [...]
Check GitLab API access: FAILED. code: 502
 gitlab-shell self-check failed
   Try fixing it:
   Make sure GitLab is running;
   Check the gitlab-shell configuration file:
   sudo -u gitlab -H editor /usr/share/gitlab-shell/config.yml
Please fix the error above and rerun the checks.
 [...]
 Checking Sidekiq ...

 Running? ... no
   Try fixing it:
   sudo -u gitlab -H RAILS_ENV=production bin/background_jobs start
   For more information see:
doc/install/installation.md in section "Install Init Script"
   see log/sidekiq.log for possible errors
Please fix the error above and rerun the checks.
 [...]
 All migrations up? ... no
   Try fixing it:
   sudo -u gitlab -H bundle exec rake db:migrate RAILS_ENV=production
Please fix the error above and rerun the checks.
 [...]

As a user, I'd expect that after installing the "gitlab" package, I can
follow the above instructions without problems. Unfortunately, this is
not the case, because:

 - the gitlab package does not Depends, Recommends or Suggests sudo or
   an editor
 - executing bin/background_jobs does not seem to work on a Debian
   system
 - as described in README.Debian, the "sudo -u gitlab -H bundle exec
rake" line will not work on Debian gitlab

I see the following ways to fix this:

 - suggest sudo and editor
 - adapt the messages such that they give advice which can be executed
   on a Debian gitlab installation
 - add more sections to README.Debian like "if gitlab tells you to run
   A, run B instead"

Thanks!

cheers, josch

Package: gitlab
Version: 8.4.3+dfsg-12
Severity: wishlist

Hi,

gitlab added letsencrypt as a hard dependency. This leads to the
following additional packages getting installed:

  letsencrypt python-acme python-cffi-backend python-chardet
  python-configargparse python-configobj python-cryptography
  python-dialog python-enum34 python-funcsigs python-idna
  python-ipaddress python-letsencrypt python-mock python-ndg-httpsclient
  python-openssl python-parsedatetime python-pbr python-pkg-resources
  python-psutil python-pyasn1 python-requests python-rfc3339 python-six
  python-tz python-urllib3 python-zope.component python-zope.event
  python-zope.hookable python-zope.interface

I require none of these packages and they will just take up space on a
system where I have no need for being able to acquire a certificate via
letsencrypt ever.

It also seems that letsencrypt is only used in the postinst script if
the respective debconf variable is set to true. Thus it seems that the
availability of letsencrypt is actually optional and not a hard
dependency of the gitlab system.

Considering these points, could you maybe move the letsencrypt
dependency from Depends into Recommends and adjust the postinst script
to only try using letsencrypt if the binary is available?

Thanks!

cheers, josch

No, upstream has not decided on letsencrypt. gitlab maintainers decided
to use letsencrypt. The number of packages depending on letsencrypt is
small because it is very new. We are already working on adding
letsencrypt to diaspora-common too. Any web based software would want to
make it easy to configure ssl and letsencrypt is the perfect solution
for that.

You want a db to be configured for the app to work.

It is an additional step and not intuitive. I want things to work well
by default and dig further only when it is required.

dbconfig is something Debian-specific and used by _many_ packages and
there are probably very little users who don't want that and are
capable of managing this.

The fact that gitlab uses letsencrypt seems something that upstream
has decided on. And so far, gitlab is the only package which depends
on letsencrypt. Additionally, letsencrypt can be considered
controversial.

And actually, I don't know why there is a dbconfig-no-thanks package
at all. My guess is that just skipping dbcommon doesn't work and the
file /usr/share/dbconfig-common/internal/dbc-no-thanks is required.
Which sounds like a bug in its design.

Anyway, the general idea of …-no-thanks packages still looks fishy to
me and I surely would avoid to introduce more such packages instead of
using Recommends — which is clearly meant for such situations.

> If it is just in Recommends, you have to disable recommends for each

Why doesn't "apt-get install gitlab letsencrypt-" suffice? (Same for
aptitude. Actually aptitude had that feature earlier. And
interactively that situation is like cake in aptitude's TUI.)

> I want this as depends but allow people to opt out.

It looks to me like a very hacky solution which works around the
system and should be avoided whereever possible.

> This is already done in gitlab.

Then everything should be fine already.

> If you don't think this is a good idea, you may close this bug.

I've Cc'ed letsencrypt-de...@lists.alioth.debian.org to get another
opinion on that, but I doubt that this will change the situation.
