The best thing is to list them here :-)

 Anne-Marie

Okay, I will do so. Not all of these ideas are mine, I am just
passing along the ones I think are worthwhile:

Image Wallpaper:
1. When you hover over a wallpaper in the list for a certain amount of
time, show that wallpaper on the desktop. This lets you get a
full-size preview of the wallpaper and lets you see how it works with
your current theme.

2. Have a custom wallpaper position option. This would let you set
the position and scaling in both horizontal and vertical dimensions,
either to presets like align top or bottom, or to custom values in
pixels. This is useful for people who want to have one wallpaper span
multiple desktops, they can set the same image but show different
parts of that image.

Slideshow wallpaper:
1. Link slideshows. All the slideshow wallpapers that have this
option enabled would use the same timing and random number generator,
so they would all show the same wallpaper at the same time. Useful
for multi-monitor setups

Character Map:
1. Lets uses set characters that they use often. On the desktop,
these would probably appear as a list at the top or bottom of the
plasmoid. In the panel, they would appear as a list next to the icon.

Device Notifier:
1. Double click on a device to open it in the default application.
Alternatively, have an icon on the right with the default application
and click on that.

Lock/Logout:
1. Add more options: Screen saver, shut down, reboot, turn off screen.

2. Put icons of the options next to the options on the config dialog.

Pager:
1. Show a thumbnail of the desktop on hover

Task Manager:
1. Drag tasks to desktop to move them to current virtual desktop/activity

2. Drag tasks to activity manager or activity bar to add them to that activity.

Search Launch Containment:
1. Add breadcrumbs next to the back button.

Kalgebra and Qalculate widgets:
1. Merge the widgets, user can set the back-end.

2. History button that shows the last 10 or so calculations and results.

Calculator:
1. Scientific mode

2. History button that shows the last 10 or so calculations and results.

Quicklaunch:
1. The popup button should scale with widget size and position itself
properly with widget layout when on the desktop

2. Enable and disable labels independently for the main portion and
the popup. Currently the popup always has labels.

Folder view:
1. On hover on the title, show a refresh button.

Kate sessions:
1. Right-clicking on a session should give you options to remove or
hide that session

Konqueror profiles:
1. Right-clicking on a profile should give you options to remove or
hide that session

Preview:
1. Integrate the preview widget with the dolphin part, so when
clicking the preview action in dolphin it popups up the preview
widget above dolphin with a preview of that file

World clock
1. Let the user temporarily set a custom time for the local time zone,
and the use the mouse to check what that time is in other time zones.

Panel:
1. In autohide mode, the panel has a nice animation when the panel is
shown. In windows can cover mode, putting your cursor at the screen
edge also shows the panel, but there is no animation. Probably the
fade effect would be best.

2. Not everyone like showing the panel at the screen edge in windows
can cover mode. Make a windows always cover mode that doesn't do
this.

3. The panel should unhide when you drag a widget to it.

Widget Explorer:
1. The search field on the widget explorer should have focus when you open it.

Cashew:
1. Mouse actions for the cashew. Currently we have mouse actions for
doing mouse events on the desktop. We should have the same thing for
the cashew (except for left mouse click, of course). For instance a
user could have scroll wheel on the desktop to change virtual
desktops,

I have just some comments on some of them, most seems quite nice.

 Image Wallpaper:
 1. When you hover over a wallpaper in the list for a certain amount of

full-size preview of the wallpaper and lets you see how it works with

Could be an idea, put it there

pixels. This is useful for people who want to have one wallpaper span

I don't think that's the right place to do something like that

 Slideshow wallpaper:
 1. Link slideshows. All the slideshow wallpapers that have this
option enabled would use the same timing and random number generator,
so they would all show the same wallpaper at the same time. Useful
 for multi-monitor setups

that's a good idea but doesn't need gui at all.
such settings could be automatically done for containments belonging to the
same activity.

 Pager:
 1. Show a thumbnail of the desktop on hover

less clutter in the pager, the better it is

 Task Manager:
 1. Drag tasks to desktop to move them to current virtual desktop/activity

 2. Drag tasks to activity manager or activity bar to add them to that
 activity.

for desktops kinda works, for activities, yes, good idea it's a due and
important thing

 Search Launch Containment:
 1. Add breadcrumbs next to the back button.

search and launch is purposedfully a single level deep, it's the main point of
its design, and i really don't want to change that

By the way, of course the idea is to have -many- of those ideas.

However, those ideas will realize with someone actually volunteering realizing
them.
so what about this:
you write those ideas on the wiki page (as i write here there are some that i
think have some issue, all the others, quite nice)
then you take one, the one that seems simpler to you, and try to do it?
it's a very easy way to start, then after one doing the next is easier, then
easier, then easier... :D

thanks for the list. please add the ones with consensus to the web page.

 Image Wallpaper:
 1. When you hover over a wallpaper in the list for a certain amount of
time, show that wallpaper on the desktop. This lets you get a
full-size preview of the wallpaper and lets you see how it works with
 your current theme.

-1; we covered why already in the past on this list.

-1; there are better ways of acheiving that, e.g. actually dividing up the
image in a proper, competent image editor.

 Slideshow wallpaper:
 1. Link slideshows. All the slideshow wallpapers that have this
option enabled would use the same timing and random number generator,
so they would all show the same wallpaper at the same time. Useful
 for multi-monitor setups

+1; would also be nice for multi-screen single image wallpapers too. i think
this should be a multi-monitor-only option in the image wallpaper.

 Character Map:
 1. Lets uses set characters that they use often. On the desktop,
these would probably appear as a list at the top or bottom of the
plasmoid. In the panel, they would appear as a list next to the icon.

+1

 Device Notifier:
 1. Double click on a device to open it in the default application.
Alternatively, have an icon on the right with the default application
 and click on that.

-1; single click means two clicks, so there is no savings here. it will only
make the code even more complex for no real win.

 Lock/Logout:
 1. Add more options: Screen saver, shut down, reboot, turn off screen.

screen saver == lock; shutdown and reboot == leave; turn off screen is better
left to hardware keys.

 2. Put icons of the options next to the options on the config dialog.

 Pager:
 1. Show a thumbnail of the desktop on hover

+1; should be done via a kwin effect just like we do the window thumbnails.

 Task Manager:
 1. Drag tasks to desktop to move them to current virtual desktop/activity

+1; this already works with the pager. it should be implemented in the
desktop containment.

 2. Drag tasks to activity manager or activity bar to add them to that
 activity.

+1

 Search Launch Containment:
 1. Add breadcrumbs next to the back button.

+1 (same for kickoff, btw :)

 Kalgebra and Qalculate widgets:
 1. Merge the widgets, user can set the back-end.

 2. History button that shows the last 10 or so calculations and results.

+1

 Calculator:
 1. Scientific mode

no; start a different plasmoid that can become the uber graphing science
monster calculator :)

 2. History button that shows the last 10 or so calculations and results.

+1

 Quicklaunch:
 1. The popup button should scale with widget size and position itself
properly with widget layout when on the desktop

+1

 2. Enable and disable labels independently for the main portion and
the popup. Currently the popup always has labels.

what would the point of this be?

 Folder view:
 1. On hover on the title, show a refresh button.

when is refresh needed?

 Kate sessions:
 1. Right-clicking on a session should give you options to remove or
 hide that session

 Konqueror profiles:
 1. Right-clicking on a profile should give you options to remove or
 hide that session

+1 to both

 Preview:
 1. Integrate the preview widget with the dolphin part, so when
clicking the preview action in dolphin it popups up the preview
widget above dolphin with a preview of that file

not sure about this one; would highly depend on the UI implementation imho.

 World clock
 1. Let the user temporarily set a custom time for the local time zone,
and the use the mouse to check what that time is in other time zones.

we already do that in the clock plasmoids; world clock is a marble thing,
though. making it consistent with the other clock plasmoids would be good.

 Panel:
 1. In autohide mode, the panel has a nice animation when the panel is
shown. In windows can cover mode, putting your cursor at the screen
edge also shows the panel, but there is no animation. Probably the
 fade effect would be best.

+1; this is a kwin thing.

 2. Not everyone like showing the panel at the screen edge in windows
can cover mode. Make a windows always cover mode that doesn't do
 this.

-1; the # of people that this would make happy versus the # of people who
wouldn't use it versus the annoyance of having to explain that in the config
UI + having yet another entry there == not interesting :)

 3. The panel should unhide when you drag a widget to it.

  1. When you hover over a wallpaper in the list for a certain amount of

-1; we covered why already in the past on this list.

  2. Have a custom wallpaper position option. This would let you set

think this should be a multi-monitor-only option in the image wallpaper.

  Character Map:
  1. Lets uses set characters that they use often. On the desktop,

 desktop containment.

  2. Drag tasks to activity manager or activity bar to add them to that
  activity.

  Search Launch Containment:
  1. Add breadcrumbs next to the back button.

no; start a different plasmoid that can become the uber graphing science

 turn off screen is better

 2. Put icons of the options next to the options on the config dialog.

Was there supposed to be a comment here?

 Calculator:
 1. Scientific mode

no; start a different plasmoid that can become the uber graphing science
 monster calculator :)

This would still be a smallish job since it would almost certainly
start as a fork of the existing one, so should that go in?

 2. Enable and disable labels independently for the main portion and
the popup.  Currently the popup always has labels.

what would the point of this be?

The labels take up a lot of space, forcing you to move your mouse
further, and they force the popup into a vertical orientation.

 Folder view:
 1. On hover on the title, show a refresh button.

 when is refresh needed?

Ideally it wouldn't be, but as long as fam is optional you can't count
on folders being properly refreshed. It is also needed when you use
nepomuk searches as your folder view, since those are not properly
refreshed on changes.

 Preview:
 1. Integrate the preview widget with the dolphin part, so when
clicking the preview action in dolphin it popups up the preview

not sure about this one; would highly depend on the UI implementation imho.

It would be the same UI as on the desktop, only it wouldn't be on the
desktop. We already have the action there, it just doesn't work very
well (if at all, I couldn't figure out how to get it to work at
least).

 World clock
 1. Let the user temporarily set a custom time for the local time zone,
and the use the mouse to check what that time is in other time zones.

we already do that in the clock plasmoids; world clock is a marble thing,
though. making it consistent with the other clock plasmoids would be good.

I think you misunderstood, what I meant is let a user type in a
particular time, and then let the user see what that time corresponds
to in other time zones.

 3. The panel should unhide when you drag a widget to it.

it does for new widgets; if you mean drag'n'drop (DnD) between containments,
well, that whole system needs a rewrite. what needs to happen is once the
widget hits the edge (+ some margin?) of the containment it should be turned
into a QDrag and normal DnD can begin. at which point, the panels will all
Just Work(tm). bonus: it will also fix the between multiple screens, from
panel to desktop and perhaps even between multiple activities problem of
 DnD not supported well.

Then I take it this is too much for a featurelet?

 Cashew:
 1. Mouse actions for the cashew.  Currently we have mouse actions for
doing mouse events on the desktop.  We should have the same thing for
the cashew (except for left mouse click, of course).  For instance a
user could have scroll wheel on the desktop to change virtual
desktops, and scroll wheel on the cashew to change activities.

mmm.. sounds complicated, in terms of configuration. it's possible, but my
 questions would be:

 * why just on the toolbox, rather than the whole containment?

You can already do it on the whole containment, the idea would be to
provide additional options for the cashew.

 * what would the configuration UI look like?

Take the existing mouse actions config, and have two sections
Background and cashew (or whatever you want to call it, the names
are not important). Both would be the same as the existing one.

Another I just thought of:

Let users set a blank label for the folder view. The label shouldn't
take up and space when it is blank.

too little gain for creating a magic double click.

And what about the icon variant? That only needs 1 click

we end up with a ton of icons with increasing lack of clarity as to what they
mean. not elegant.

i don't feel the savings is worth the risk of accidental log outs. it will end
up with a confirmation, so we'll still have extra clicks.

  turn off screen is better

 Why?

unless things have changed, this is something that doesn't always work on all

The labels take up a lot of space, forcing you to move your mouse

corollary: they are easier to hit due to being bigger. 6 of one, half dozen of
another at best. -1 on the basis that it means config UI bloat and more code
paths to maintain.

sounds like a flaw in nepomuk searches and systems without change

a simpler approach might be to just connect each checkbox's toggled(bool)
signal to settingsModified. there is a certain prettiness to letting the one
method handle it, however. the signal changed() should be made more
descriptive, however. perhaps configurationUiChanged() or something similar
that is very, very clear as to what it is there for :)

Re: GSOC: idea page

Yeah we talked about splitting the Media Center stuff into 2... but well
 since
I wasn't there at that one meeting, I really dunno what cblauvelt is up to
 atm
 :)

You weren't there so we proceeded on without you! :) If you have an idea on
how to break it up into two projects, I'm all ears. They'll need to be
written in a way where they can be done if only one or both get chosen.

How to define the action the side-buttons of a plasmoid?

2011-02-13 Thread Kun Zhang
I am writing a plasmoid in python and want to do something when the user
clicked the Refresh button in the sliding-out side-panel (which also
contains the Resize and the Configuration buttons). What's the API I should
use?

2011-02-13 Thread Kun Zhang
Sorry, I got it wrong. @_@

Here's another question: can I customize the buttons on the side-panel, like
adding a new button?
I notice that some plasmoids have a forth button, clicking on which opens
another application. My plasmoid only have 3 side-buttons, how can I add the
forth one?

That isn't a refresh button, it is a rotate button,.

I think the fourth button is specifically for opening an application
you associate with the plasmoid. I don't think there is a way to set
any other functions besides this.

Also, please put replies after the quote from the previous email.
