I must say, Grub is also absurdly slow on my machine, especially with high
resolution screens (4K) the menu takes multiple seconds(!) to draw and repaint.
I never bothered to complain, though, as I hardly use or see the menu :)

Sure if it is laggish then it shouldn't be themed. That too is something that
ought to be addressed in GRUB though, as only GRUB knows if rendering is
obscenely slow.

Now this doesn't seem particularly common given you are the only person who
complained. Best I can do is make distributions aware of this. If you think
that we should not advise using the theme based on the rendering lag, that is
something you want to take up with the VDG.

Personally I advise whoever has the problem to simply disable the theme. It's
basically having shit UX for everyone (no theme) or shit UX for a select few
(laggish rendering).

Of course somebody else has reported it already:
http://savannah.gnu.org/bugs/?46133
There is no mention of a theme as the issue, but one of the links is to the
redhat bug, I posted earlier.

If this is a common problem, as a workaround until it is solved I would prefer
to not use a theme at all per default. An unusable slow GRUB in case of high
resolution displays is worse than having a not so nice looking GRUB. But I'm
currently the only one complaining here, so as long as there are no other
people I'm fine with waiting on a fix by GRUB (which, when I look at their
bugtracker could be forever...). I can disable the theme on my PC in the
meantime.

Tried out all your steps, problem wasn't solved. After looking at it a bit
more, I also don't think anymore it's because of the progress bar. The boot
screen is rendered letter by letter and it doesn't matter if the countdown is
actually running or was canceled (by pressing arrow down).

To me, it seems to be the fault of the GRUB theming engine itself. It's very
inefficient and for example Fedora after they had tried it out, gave up on it
directly as documented here: https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=822123

Maybe they reintroduced it later though with a trick? The alternative would be
to only use a different background instead of a whole theme.

https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=371522

Bug ID: 371522
Summary: Hard system freeze at kde startup on battery mode
   Product: Powerdevil
   Version: 5.8.0
  Platform: Debian testing
OS: Linux
Status: UNCONFIRMED
  Severity: major
  Priority: NOR
 Component: general
  Assignee: plasma-devel@kde.org
  Reporter: parkerjon+...@gmail.com

When my laptop is unplugged from AC power, the entire linux system will freeze
within about 10-15 seconds. This also applies when logging in on battery mode.
Everything freezes at some point. I also have the latest version of MATE
desktop installed and do not have the same problems with it.

Also was not having issues in debian testing roughly back in July, so it is a
recent break.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Load KDE
2. Unplug AC power

Actual Results:
Freezing.

Expected Results:
No freezing.

Right, so, Luca just checked on suse and the theme renders fine with the x11
renderer and runs through its test sequence without theme related problems.
Meaning the theme itself is working.

This leaves us with a number of options on why it breaks:
- the distributions' dracut doesn't package all the assets of the theme into
the initrd (images, font files maybe)
- the script itself fails to parse when run from initrd, which would be super
weird considering it is parsing just fine when run through the x11 renderer (at
least on opensuse).

So. Y'all want to take this to your distributions for investigation.

Best thing would be to find out how to switch plymouth into debug mode for your
distribution (usually kernel cmdline plymouth:debug) and then have a look at
the logs for any obvious errors regarding the breeze theme. Additionally
manually unpacking the initrd and checking that the theme tree in the initrd is
the same as the tree on-disk would be useful there.

When in doubt about the parsing bit: install the plymouth x11 renderer and run
sudo test/plytest.sh in the breeze-plymouth source tree. This should run a
fairly comprehensive ability test from offline-updates over fsck to password
prompt. Most importantly it will touch most code paths to detect parsing
errors.

Closing this report as it's not a theme problem apparently.

Could it be that at this point plasmashell wasn't running (or aren't you using
t notification plasmoid)? Seems like KNotification used the fallback popup
window which requires widgets but the new separate PowerDevil binary is only a
QGuiApplication.

   Product: Breeze
   Version: 5.8.0
  Platform: Fedora RPMs

OS: Linux
Status: UNCONFIRMED
  Severity: normal
  Priority: NOR
 Component: general
  Assignee: plasma-devel@kde.org
  Reporter: jrez...@redhat.com

I have a multiscreen set up with different DPIs - internal laptop's resolution
is 2560x1440 with two external Full HD monitors. When only internal is used,
all looks good but when external (docked) are used, theme is hardly usable. On
internal monitor it's messed up (see URL attachment), on external monitors,
everything is tiny (I can provide picture if needed).

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. multimonitor set up with different DPIs
2. use sddm

Actual Results:
Hardly usable theme

Expected Results:
It just works. I even don't need proper scaling.

Bug ID: 370569

  Platform: Other
OS: Linux
Status: UNCONFIRMED
  Severity: normal
  Priority: NOR
 Component: general
  Assignee: plasma-devel@kde.org
  Reporter: ro...@kde.org

Hi
It seems like kde4breeze.upd completely ignores the values set in
$XDG_CONFIG_DIRS/kdeglobals by a system distributor causing the script to
override the configured values with Breeze.

The update code seems to take into account LNF defaults but does not take into
account XDG_CONFIG_DIRS

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Configure a different ColorScheme under the [General] category in
XDG_CONFIG_DIRS/kdeglobals
2. Make sure your LNF package does not set a ColorScheme
3. Remove the ColorScheme entry from ~/.config/kdeglobals
4. Remove the kde4breeze.upd entry from ~/.config/kconf_updaterc
5. Logout
6. Login

Actual Results:
ColorScheme is reset to Breeze

Expected Results:
ColorScheme should be configured according to system global settings

If it was the progressbar I think we'd see more reports of this. I have however
seen this temporarily at some point, since it went away on its own after some
updates I am rather content in saying that this is either a bug in the grub
config or grub itself.

Please attach the following files to the bug report
- /boot/grub/grub.cfg
- /boot/grub/grubenv
- /etc/default/grub

Additionally zip up and attach all files in /etc/grub.d (alternatively attach
the files individually but I expect there to be a bunch of them).

Once you are sure you've attached all files please try the following.

On a terminal run `sudo update-grub`, then reboot and see if that fixed the
problem.

If it did not fix the problem delete the following directories and files:
- /boot/grub/themes/breeze/progress_bar/
- /boot/grub/themes/breeze/terminal/
- /boot/grub/themes/breeze/oxygenmono10.pf2
and again `sudo update-grub`, then reboot and see if that fixed the problem.

If it did not fix the problem edit the file /boot/grub/themes/breeze/theme.txt
and find the bit where it says
> # Show the boot menu
> + boot_menu {
below that insert a new line with this content:
> scrollbar = false
save the file and again `sudo update-grub`, then reboot and see if that fixed
the problem.

If it did not fix the problem edit the same file again and remove the line
again. Towards the end of the file you'll find two "progress_bar {}" blocks.
Remove the bottom one, save the file and again `sudo update-grub`, then reboot
and see if that fixed the problem.

If it did not fix the problem edit the same file again and remove the other
"progress_bar {}" block as well, save, `sudo update-grub`, reboot and see if
that fixed the problem.

If none of the above steps fixed the problem you can restore your theme to the
defaults with the command `sudo apt install --reinstall grub-theme-breeze` and
I'll have to take a closer look at your config.

If one of the steps fixed the problem, please add a comment here. Additionally
restore the default with the command `sudo apt install --reinstall
grub-theme-breeze` followed by `sudo update-grub` and reboot to see if the
problem remains fixed. Please add a comment about this as well.

Everything in the new breeze sddm theme in Plasma 5.8.0 is centered on the

username field, if the user chooses to log in as "another" user.

I propose that the text on these two fields be centerer.

2016-10-03 Thread via KDE Bugzilla

I have the same issue -- no response beyond "some categories not available"
from the Get Hot New Stuff dialog for "Get New Wallpapers".

Re Thomas Pfeiffer's comment in #4 though I have (via "sudo apt list
plasma-framework") the latest framework for Kubuntu 16.04, namely
"plasma-framework/xenial,now 5.23.0-0ubuntu1~ubuntu16.04~ppa1 amd64
[installed]".

Neither 5.22 nor 5.24 are available to me via apt repos I have (which are the
standard Kubuntu ones plus a few extras).

FWIW it appears that you can get the content direct from
https://store.kde.org/.

Known problem, see bug#366299.

> Why window size is hardcoded? I even can't resize it :(

The window size is not "hardcoded" at all, and it depends on the options that
are actually supported by your hardware. IMHO, the bug seems to be that
kcmshell5 tries to make the window large enough so that all options fit into
the window, and doesn't take the screen size into account.

You can resize the window though, right-click on the title bar or the task
manager entry and choose "More Actions"->Resize, or double-click on the title
bar to maximize it.
You can also move the window by holding Alt and clicking/dragging anywhere on
the window.

Or just open the "Power Management" settings in "System Settings", this doesn't
suffer from the size problem.

Plasma 5.8's new lockscreen design features white text that, depending on the
background (e.g. an image), is barely readable.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Pick a beautiful photo of a misty or snowy landscape for the lockscreen
2. Lock the screen

Actual Results:
Text not readable

Expected Results:
Some sort of text effect would be nice. A drop shadow, a faint outline, or

I'm using sddm as my session manager.

Let's suppose that on my laptop, I have two user sessions open, with different
users User1 and User2, which I can access by hitting Ctrl + Alt + F1 and Ctrl +
Alt + F2. Let us also suppose that my laptop is disconnected from the power.
Suppose I've opened and logged into User2, and then have switched back to User1
and spent ~ 30 minutes there. When I switch back to User2 after this period,
within a few seconds, my laptop suspends.

It looks like inactivity in a session for an extended period of time causes the
laptop to suspend when switching into that session, despite having activity in
other session(s).

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
0. Unplug laptop from power supply
1. Create a new session for a different user
2. Switch back to old session and spend ~ 30 minutes there
3. Switch to the new session

Actual Results:
Laptop should suspend within a few seconds, if not a minute.

Expected Results:
Laptop should not suspend.

[Powerdevil] [Bug 369181] New: User session security vulnerability from screen lock being suppressed with power management

2016-09-21 Thread Boskote via KDE Bugzilla
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=369181

Bug ID: 369181
Summary: User session security vulnerability from screen lock
being suppressed with power management
   Product: Powerdevil
   Version: 5.6.4
  Platform: Debian testing
OS: Linux
Status: UNCONFIRMED
  Severity: major
  Priority: NOR
 Component: general
  Assignee: plasma-devel@kde.org
  Reporter: bosk...@riseup.net

The problem is that applications (in my experience it has only been browsers,
both firefox and chromium) request that power management be suppressed, which
overrides an automatic screen lock timeout configured through power management.
On its own this behaviour makes sense, but it can result in a silent failure of
the timed automatic screen locking, which is a significant vulnerability for
users who are depending on the auto screen lock for the security of their
session.

This problem is exacerbated by poorly designed websites that get the browser to
request power management suppression for reasons that are not obvious to the
user (a background webRTC PeerConnection in chromium is the recent example I
saw).

I would expect that there would be an externally visible notification of when
this suppression of power management occurs, so that a user who is depending on
screen locking will be aware that it has been disabled. Alternatively, there
could also be a way of configuring power management to override the suppression
requests for users who value screen locking (and other power management
features) over the convenience of the automatic suppression.

It is possible to click on the "Battery and Brightness" tab of the system tray
to see a message about suppression of power management, but there is no
externally visible notification when the suppression occurs. It is too tedious
to periodically click into this area to check if there is a suppression.

It is also possible to configure a button or keyboard shortcut for quick screen
locking and do this manually just in case the automatic screen lock is being
suppressed. This is the workaround I am currently using, but it is basically
just a replacement for a timed screen lock that can't be trusted to work as
configured.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Use power management to configure a short timeout on the screen lock
2. Open a poorly designed website in chromium or firefox that makes background
requests to suppress power management (some pages from http://www.laprensa.hn/
in chromium containing background webrtc peerconnections, for example).
3. Get up and leave the computer with that tab open. See how long it takes for
someone to realize you left your session open and start digging around in your
stuff :p

Actual Results:
The screen lock will not work because the power management is suppressed.

Expected Results:
Popped up a notification (or have the option to enable such a notification) as
soon as the power management is suppressed so that the offending website tab
could be closed, or the screen could be manually locked.

I thought about this kind of thing once since I had another use-case - a screen
where the speaker is powered by the monitor so DPMS would cut the sound.
Fortunately in that case the monitor can be configured to keep audio power on
when the screen was off.

This was part of the motivation for the proposal in bug 318461. I think that
the idea was that screen locking was something that happened when the session
was idle, but screen power-saving was something that happened when the screen
(logind seat? device?) was idle. Then normally the screen being locked would
mean the screen becomes idle but things like screen-powered audio or, now, HDMI
audio could inhibit this.

More practically, it may be feasible for active HDMI audio to inhibit screen
power saving in the same way external screens currently inhibit any kind of
screen interruption. How does that sound, Kai?

I also wonder if this could be handled better with help from further up the
stack. Is there an opportunity to do things better with wayland than with
xserver dpms?

Is there a gnome (or other desktop) bug filed too, or are you only interested
in a KDE Plasma solution?

Interesting. I never considered keeping the screen on while locked a desirable
usecase as it just wastes power. However, you just described one. :) I'll see
what I can do, however, when the screen is locked PowerDevil would explicitly
ignore a "keep screen on" inhibition as to not let a playing video (covered by
the lock screen and thus invisible) keep the screen on indefinitely.

It's actually supposed to do just that and if I run "ksplashqml --test" it
works.

The problem is that the splash (at least the current infrastructure) doesn't
have a "about to quit" signal, it basically has 6 (or 7?) stages which are
increased by various services starting (you know previously we had this
progress bar). At stage 2 it animates the spinner in and at stage 5 it is
animated out again. However, it can happen that the subsequent stages happen in
such quick succession that the spinner is still visible and once the window
closes only its texture is kept and faded out resulting in a frozen spinner.

password entry field is not auto selected which I think should be for
fit-and-finish polishing. Not an important/urgent issue of course!

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Boot into KDE 5.8 LTS Beta until login screen appears.
2. Click the "Different Users" icon and let the other user login screen slide
in.
3. Click the icon to go back (Back/Users) to the main default user login
screen.

Actual Results:
Password entry field is not automatically selected for entry the way it is when
first boot to login screen.

Expected Results:
Password entry field should be selected automatically when returning to the
default user login screen.

That would be great! Will this patch be included in 5.7.95?

Git commit ece8adacb35b8897407d92d995f362a6aea644be by Kai Uwe Broulik.
Committed on 15/09/2016 at 07:15.
Pushed by broulik into branch 'master'.

Clear idle timeouts when session becomes inactive

When the session becomes inactive, clear all idle timeouts, so we don't get
them delivered
while we're inactive or just when we're about to become active again.

Depending on your setup, PowerDevil might be blocked on X before it gets the
"session is now
inactive" signal, so it still suspends when becoming active again :/ It should
still make it
a bit less likely (and works for me :D)

So installing a local samba server on your linux pc with a single exported
