[Breeze] [Bug 370374] GRUB menu has huge lag due to theme
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=370374 Harald Sitter changed: What|Removed |Added Status|UNCONFIRMED |RESOLVED Resolution|--- |UPSTREAM --- Comment #7 from Harald Sitter --- Sure if it is laggish then it shouldn't be themed. That too is something that ought to be addressed in GRUB though, as only GRUB knows if rendering is obscenely slow. Now this doesn't seem particularly common given you are the only person who complained. Best I can do is make distributions aware of this. If you think that we should not advise using the theme based on the rendering lag, that is something you want to take up with the VDG. Personally I advise whoever has the problem to simply disable the theme. It's basically having shit UX for everyone (no theme) or shit UX for a select few (laggish rendering). -- You are receiving this mail because: You are the assignee for the bug.
[Breeze] [Bug 370374] GRUB menu has huge lag due to theme
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=370374 --- Comment #6 from Roman --- Of course somebody else has reported it already: http://savannah.gnu.org/bugs/?46133 There is no mention of a theme as the issue, but one of the links is to the redhat bug, I posted earlier. If this is a common problem, as a workaround until it is solved I would prefer to not use a theme at all per default. An unusable slow GRUB in case of high resolution displays is worse than having a not so nice looking GRUB. But I'm currently the only one complaining here, so as long as there are no other people I'm fine with waiting on a fix by GRUB (which, when I look at their bugtracker could be forever...). I can disable the theme on my PC in the meantime. -- You are receiving this mail because: You are the assignee for the bug.

https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=370374 --- Comment #3 from Roman --- Created attachment 101717 --> https://bugs.kde.org/attachment.cgi?id=101717&action=edit requested boot and config files Tried out all your steps, problem wasn't solved. After looking at it a bit more, I also don't think anymore it's because of the progress bar. The boot screen is rendered letter by letter and it doesn't matter if the countdown is actually running or was canceled (by pressing arrow down). To me, it seems to be the fault of the GRUB theming engine itself. It's very inefficient and for example Fedora after they had tried it out, gave up on it directly as documented here: https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=822123 Maybe they reintroduced it later though with a trick? The alternative would be to only use a different background instead of a whole theme. -- You are receiving this mail because: You are the assignee for the bug.

[Breeze] [Bug 371276] Only black screen with breeze plymouth theme in plasma 5.8.2
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=371276 Harald Sitter changed: What|Removed |Added Resolution|--- |INVALID Status|UNCONFIRMED |RESOLVED --- Comment #4 from Harald Sitter --- Right, so, Luca just checked on suse and the theme renders fine with the x11 renderer and runs through its test sequence without theme related problems. Meaning the theme itself is working. This leaves us with a number of options on why it breaks: - the distributions' dracut doesn't package all the assets of the theme into the initrd (images, font files maybe) - the script itself fails to parse when run from initrd, which would be super weird considering it is parsing just fine when run through the x11 renderer (at least on opensuse). So. Y'all want to take this to your distributions for investigation. Best thing would be to find out how to switch plymouth into debug mode for your distribution (usually kernel cmdline plymouth:debug) and then have a look at the logs for any obvious errors regarding the breeze theme. Additionally manually unpacking the initrd and checking that the theme tree in the initrd is the same as the tree on-disk would be useful there. When in doubt about the parsing bit: install the plymouth x11 renderer and run sudo test/plytest.sh in the breeze-plymouth source tree. This should run a fairly comprehensive ability test from offline-updates over fsck to password prompt. Most importantly it will touch most code paths to detect parsing errors. Closing this report as it's not a theme problem apparently. -- You are receiving this mail because: You are the assignee for the bug.

[Breeze] [Bug 370374] GRUB menu has huge lag due to theme
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=370374 Harald Sitter changed: What|Removed |Added Status|UNCONFIRMED |NEEDSINFO Resolution|--- |WAITINGFORINFO --- Comment #1 from Harald Sitter --- If it was the progressbar I think we'd see more reports of this. I have however seen this temporarily at some point, since it went away on its own after some updates I am rather content in saying that this is either a bug in the grub config or grub itself. Please attach the following files to the bug report - /boot/grub/grub.cfg - /boot/grub/grubenv - /etc/default/grub Additionally zip up and attach all files in /etc/grub.d (alternatively attach the files individually but I expect there to be a bunch of them). Once you are sure you've attached all files please try the following. On a terminal run `sudo update-grub`, then reboot and see if that fixed the problem. If it did not fix the problem delete the following directories and files: - /boot/grub/themes/breeze/progress_bar/ - /boot/grub/themes/breeze/terminal/ - /boot/grub/themes/breeze/oxygenmono10.pf2 and again `sudo update-grub`, then reboot and see if that fixed the problem. If it did not fix the problem edit the file /boot/grub/themes/breeze/theme.txt and find the bit where it says > # Show the boot menu > + boot_menu { below that insert a new line with this content: > scrollbar = false save the file and again `sudo update-grub`, then reboot and see if that fixed the problem. If it did not fix the problem edit the same file again and remove the line again. Towards the end of the file you'll find two "progress_bar {}" blocks. Remove the bottom one, save the file and again `sudo update-grub`, then reboot and see if that fixed the problem. If it did not fix the problem edit the same file again and remove the other "progress_bar {}" block as well, save, `sudo update-grub`, reboot and see if that fixed the problem. If none of the above steps fixed the problem you can restore your theme to the defaults with the command `sudo apt install --reinstall grub-theme-breeze` and I'll have to take a closer look at your config. If one of the steps fixed the problem, please add a comment here. Additionally restore the default with the command `sudo apt install --reinstall grub-theme-breeze` followed by `sudo update-grub` and reboot to see if the problem remains fixed. Please add a comment about this as well. -- You are receiving this mail because: You are the assignee for the bug.

Known problem, see bug#366299. > Why window size is hardcoded? I even can't resize it :( The window size is not "hardcoded" at all, and it depends on the options that are actually supported by your hardware. IMHO, the bug seems to be that kcmshell5 tries to make the window large enough so that all options fit into the window, and doesn't take the screen size into account. You can resize the window though, right-click on the title bar or the task manager entry and choose "More Actions"->Resize, or double-click on the title bar to maximize it. You can also move the window by holding Alt and clicking/dragging anywhere on the window. https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=369181 Bug ID: 369181 Summary: User session security vulnerability from screen lock being suppressed with power management Product: Powerdevil Version: 5.6.4 Platform: Debian testing OS: Linux Status: UNCONFIRMED Severity: major Priority: NOR Component: general Assignee: plasma-devel@kde.org Reporter: bosk...@riseup.net The problem is that applications (in my experience it has only been browsers, both firefox and chromium) request that power management be suppressed, which overrides an automatic screen lock timeout configured through power management. On its own this behaviour makes sense, but it can result in a silent failure of the timed automatic screen locking, which is a significant vulnerability for users who are depending on the auto screen lock for the security of their session. This problem is exacerbated by poorly designed websites that get the browser to request power management suppression for reasons that are not obvious to the user (a background webRTC PeerConnection in chromium is the recent example I saw). I would expect that there would be an externally visible notification of when this suppression of power management occurs, so that a user who is depending on screen locking will be aware that it has been disabled. Alternatively, there could also be a way of configuring power management to override the suppression requests for users who value screen locking (and other power management features) over the convenience of the automatic suppression. It is possible to click on the "Battery and Brightness" tab of the system tray to see a message about suppression of power management, but there is no externally visible notification when the suppression occurs. It is too tedious to periodically click into this area to check if there is a suppression. It is also possible to configure a button or keyboard shortcut for quick screen locking and do this manually just in case the automatic screen lock is being suppressed. This is the workaround I am currently using, but it is basically just a replacement for a timed screen lock that can't be trusted to work as configured. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. Use power management to configure a short timeout on the screen lock 2. Open a poorly designed website in chromium or firefox that makes background requests to suppress power management (some pages from http://www.laprensa.hn/ in chromium containing background webrtc peerconnections, for example). 3. Get up and leave the computer with that tab open. See how long it takes for someone to realize you left your session open and start digging around in your stuff :p Actual Results: The screen lock will not work because the power management is suppressed. Expected Results: Popped up a notification (or have the option to enable such a notification) as soon as the power management is suppressed so that the offending website tab could be closed, or the screen could be manually locked. -- You are receiving this mail because: You are the assignee for the bug.

[Powerdevil] [Bug 369129] Powerdevil does not provide a way to inhibit screen saving
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=369129 Oliver Henshaw changed: What|Removed |Added CC||oliver.hens...@gmail.com --- Comment #3 from Oliver Henshaw --- I thought about this kind of thing once since I had another use-case - a screen where the speaker is powered by the monitor so DPMS would cut the sound. Fortunately in that case the monitor can be configured to keep audio power on when the screen was off. This was part of the motivation for the proposal in bug 318461. I think that the idea was that screen locking was something that happened when the session was idle, but screen power-saving was something that happened when the screen (logind seat? device?) was idle. Then normally the screen being locked would mean the screen becomes idle but things like screen-powered audio or, now, HDMI audio could inhibit this. More practically, it may be feasible for active HDMI audio to inhibit screen power saving in the same way external screens currently inhibit any kind of screen interruption. How does that sound, Kai? I also wonder if this could be handled better with help from further up the stack. Is there an opportunity to do things better with wayland than with xserver dpms? Is there a gnome (or other desktop) bug filed too, or are you only interested in a KDE Plasma solution? -- You are receiving this mail because: You are the assignee for the bug.

I never considered keeping the screen on while locked a desirable usecase as it just wastes power. However, you just described one. :) I'll see what I can do, however, when the screen is locked PowerDevil would explicitly ignore a "keep screen on" inhibition as to not let a playing video (covered by the lock screen and thus invisible) keep the screen on indefinitely. -- You are receiving this mail because: You are the assignee for the bug.

https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=368942 Kai Uwe Broulik changed: What|Removed |Added CC||k...@privat.broulik.de Status|UNCONFIRMED |CONFIRMED Ever confirmed|0 |1 --- Comment #1 from Kai Uwe Broulik --- It's actually supposed to do just that and if I run "ksplashqml --test" it works. The problem is that the splash (at least the current infrastructure) doesn't have a "about to quit" signal, it basically has 6 (or 7?) stages which are increased by various services starting (you know previously we had this progress bar). At stage 2 it animates the spinner in and at stage 5 it is animated out again. However, it can happen that the subsequent stages happen in such quick succession that the spinner is still visible and once the window closes only its texture is kept and faded out resulting in a frozen spinner. -- You are receiving this mail because: You are the assignee for the bug.
