[Powerdevil] [Bug 350365] Battery monitor in tray randomly shows there is no battery

2020-01-13 Thread Rolf Eike Beer
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=350365

--- Comment #49 from Rolf Eike Beer ---
My battery is "gone" from the panel, so I started plasmoidviewer. It just shows
a blank square, but when I click on it it shows the battery with 51%, which
sounds plausible. When I click on the "empty" (= "no battery") icon in my
taskbar it does not show this.

same as in taskbar - battery with 0% load

seems to be random for me

Interesting, it changed since my comment. I've noticed that KDE Frameworks has
upgraded to 5.65.0 what the reason could be for the change.
Now the battery is detected but sometimes it says the power is critical at 0%
and the PC will shutdown in 60seconds. After less seconds it gets power
information and everything seems to be ok but it switches back to 0% and back
again to the real load. This is not reproducable - it just happens from time to
time.
I've attached a screenshot to show this.

Unfortunately I cannot test this anymore. But I'll try if power is critical
with 0% for more than some seconds...

Just restarted my laptop.

acpi -i outputs nothing.

upower -d does not detect the battery.

dmesg outputs an acpi error
===

dmesg | grep -i error

I suspect it's an update bug somewhere, screen locker starts and then reads the
information fresh on start. We have found an issue in the proxy model we use
for sorting batteries but that seems unlikely to just hide them all, especially
not in the tooltip.

Same problem here with
- Kubuntu 18.04
- KDE Frameworks 5.44
- KDE Plasma 5.12.6
- Kernel 4.15.0-34-generic
- UPower is at version 0.99.7.

Reproducible: Almost always

Steps to reproduce:
1. After logon, unplug and plug the battery.
2. Close session and login again.
3. Battery is showed by plasmoid and detected by UPower.

*Sometimes battery is detected before the session is closed.

I have the same problem, sometimes when I reboot my laptop the battery monitor
shows no battery present and if I relogin it shows it correctly.

I noticed that if I reboot my laptop with my wireless mouse's dongle unplugged
the battery monitor usually works fine.

With the mouse's wireless dongle plugged in, it usually fails to detect any
battery.

Maybe it's something related to trying to detect the mouse's battery?

I remember reading on Planet KDE that the battery monitor should show you
mouse/keyboard battery status but it never worked for me.

Note: the attached tarball contents belong to the plasmoid that got installed
directly from the KDE UI as a user. I then located it in the home folder, put
it into a tarball, deinstalled using the KDE UI and tried to put it system wide
at /usr/share/plasma/plasmoids (which worked).

I don't know exactly where KDE downloads it from.

Tested with Ubunty 16.04 and KDE LTS backport from the Kubuntu repositiories.

I still have this problem with KDE 5.8.5 LTS and I confirmed it really is a
problem with powerdevil because an alternative widget works fine.

I'm attaching the widget that I have confirmed that works. It only needs to be
untarred at:

/usr/share/plasma/plasmoids

and then it can be added to the system tray.

In short: the original battery monitor from KDE seems to fail randomly. The
attached one works everytime.

I've just noticed that restarting plasmashell seems to fix this sometimes (no
need to log out and restart the entire session)

Plasmashell produces the following output in .xsession-errors, could be related
to this problem?

Same problem here on Gentoo, running Linux 4.7.10, KDE frameworks 5.26.0 and
Plasma 5.7.5. I have first seen this after upgrading from Plasma 5.6 and
frameworks 5.23.
Also, it seems that only the systray is affected by this. The lockscreen shows
the battery level and the screen brightness is set correctly when unplugging
from AC power.

I confirm the problem on Ubuntu 16.04 with KDE, fully up to date. It happens
exactly as Tim Taylor described on the comment above.

Kernel is:

Linux ghlaptop 4.4.0-31-generic #50-Ubuntu SMP Wed Jul 13 00:07:12 UTC 2016
x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

I also have this issue on my HP ProBook 5320m running Kubuntu 16.04. I didn't
notice it when running 15.10.

In addition to the low level tools successfully reading the battery status, the
KDE login screen also shows the battery status correctly. But when I log in,
sometimes (not always) the system tray says no battery found. But then if I log
out, the login screen still shows the correct battery info again.

The system tray monitor is obviously doing something different to the login
screen - the latter works reliably but the former does not.

I just upgraded to Kernel 4.6final... and still have that issue. Still unsure
if this is a kernel or KDE issue. Any help to solve this issue is welcome. I
really don't want to logoff/login just to fix the battery indicator.

No comment from the devs at all?

I can confirm this problem on a Lenovo Thinkpad Yoga12 with Slackware64-Linux
14.2/-current and KDE Framework 5.21/Plasma 5.6.3 and Application 16.04.0.
UPower is at version 0.9.23. Kernel is 4.6rc6.

Here is my output from upower --dump:

This is the output when the battery is not detected directly after i booted
into Plasma5:

1. Logging off, then logging in restores proper status.
2. Suspending, then waking up system doesn't.
