Basically kde's battery widget queries upower via dbus. Randomly I noticed that upower would simply freeze due to some underlying calls to libusbmuxd (something that likely to be used when you plug in ios device, e.g. iphone and ipad). So you might want to check if this is related to a freezing upower.
