Summary: PostScript: xoffset and yoffset are hardcoded in ps.h

Initial Comment:
Hello,

There was a fix introduced some time ago to the PostScript driver to honour the
xsize and ysize settings via spage():
http://plplot.svn.sourceforge.net/viewvc/plplot/trunk/include/ps.h?r1=6457&r2=9034

It would be great to have an analogous functionality for the xoffset and
yoffset settings.
As of now both are hardcoded in ps.h

Summary: comment regarding 3404359 (postscript offset)

Initial Comment:
Thanks for fixing the postscript offset issue.

One comment, the previous fix for xsize and ysize was accompanied by
introducing default values in ps.c and psttf.c:
-
http://plplot.svn.sourceforge.net/viewvc/plplot/trunk/drivers/ps.c?r1=8998&r2=9034
-
http://plplot.svn.sourceforge.net/viewvc/plplot/trunk/drivers/psttf.cc?r1=9000&r2=9034

Perhaps an analogous logic should be introduced for the offsets?
HTH,
Sylwester

Initial Comment:
Perhaps it is worth mentioning in:
http://plplot.sourceforge.net/docbook-manual/plplot-html-5.9.8/postscript-driver.html
that the PostScript driver is able to output only EPS files (e.g. it has the
EPS header hardcoded in line 245 of the drivers/ps.c)
... but it violates the EPS guidelines as the driver supports multi-page output
which is not allowed in an EPS file
(c.f section 2 on page 7 in:

I did found comilation errors in PLPlot 5.9.8.
This occurs with new things moved in deprecated section.
Joind is the output or command (with configuration options)
and 2 patches I made in order to compile but are certainly not correct for
evrey case. they only show where I found the errors.
If I activate the CMAKE Boolean parameter PL_DEPRECATED it does not compile too
but sooner in wrappers.

Summary: Improve the documentation regarding deployment on Mac OS X

Initial Comment:
The section at
http://plplot.sourceforge.net/docbook-manual/plplot-html-5.9.9/deploying.html
(Deploying programs that use PLplot) is incomplete for Mac OS X, with two TODO
markers on the page.

Would it be possible for this to get improved by somebody who has experience in
distributing plplot?

I'd especially be interested in how to bundle plplot-using programs in a
completely self-contained .app package to users.

Summary: wxWidgets link order breaks build

Initial Comment:
It looks like cmake\modules\wxwidgets.cmake contains command
  find_package(wxWidgets COMPONENTS core base QUIET)
which results in wrong link order (al least for ld/MinGW/MSWin), That's because
the given order of the wxWidgets libraries (i.e. core base) goes directly to
the internals of cmake\modules\FindwxWidgets.cmake, where it is converted to
linker's option string (showing archives), which is, in turn, fed to ld from
command string, that results in unresolved symbols (from wx core lib).
By the way, the comments in FindwxWidgets.cmake suggest different order (i.e.
base core) which results in correct build (see attachment).

Built PLplot with command:
cmake -G "MinGW Makefiles" -DwxWidgets_ROOT_DIR=c:/wxWidgets
-DwxWidgets_LIB_DIR=c:/wxWidgets/lib/gcc_lib -DCMAKE_INSTALL_PREFIX=c:/PLplot
-DCMAKE_VERBOSE_MAKEFILE=ON -DCMAKE_COLOR_MAKEFILE=OFF ..

Other info:
- MinGW (get-inst-20110802);
- cmake 2.8.6;
- wxWidgets 2.9.2, built in directory c:\wxWidgets (for cmake's
WIN32_FIND_STYLE) with command: cd build/msw & mingw32-make.exe -f makefile.gcc

Summary: Drop STATIC_OPTS ON workaround eventually for MinGW/gfortran

Initial Comment:
The current status is our tests show this workaround is necessary for at least
one distribution of MinGW/gfortran-4.5 (and probably the rest), but not
necessary for at least one distribution of MinGW/gfortran-4.6 (but also
probably the rest). The SF version of MinGW/gfortran available at
http://sourceforge.net/projects/mingw/files/MinGW/Base/gcc/Version4 is the
origin of all other distributions. Thus, this bug report is a reminder to test
that distribution roughly a year or so from now (late 2012) using the version
(usually close to the latest) of MinGW/gfortran that is installed with the
automatic MinGW/MSYS installer at
http://sourceforge.net/projects/mingw/files/Installer/mingw-get-inst. If that
distribution of MinGW/gfortran gives good results in all respects when the
workaround is dropped (i.e., STATIC_OPTS OFF), then we should drop that
workaround permanently from PLplot. My reasoning is by late 2012, the fix that
makes the workaround no longer necessary should have propagated from the SF
distribution of MinGW/gfortran to most other distributions of that software.

Summary: plcont, coordinate transformation

Initial Comment:
Hi,

It seems that there is a bug in plcont when using f90 binding

Using the same parameters for coordinate transformations compare to plimagefr
gives a wrong contour.
See example 16:
http://plplot.sourceforge.net/examples.php?demo=16&lbind=F95

I also have a test case attached. data to use it are here:
http://pascal.parois.net/public/data (quite big, sorry)

I need to transform xtrans(i,j) this way to fix it:
xtrans(i,j)= mod(xtrans(i,j)+ytrans(i,j), 2*planerealhalfwidth)

PS: the use of mod causes glitches in the contour, it's not a bug of plplot

Summary: Linear gradient in rgb space, plscmap1l

Initial Comment:
Could be a feature request depending how you see the problem.

The documention states that the gradient is linear. However this is only valid
in hls. When using rgb coding it is no longer the case.
http://plplot.sourceforge.net/docbook-manual/plplot-html-5.9.9/plscmap1l.html
"Set color map1 colors using a piece-wise linear relationship between position
in the color map (from 0 to 1) and position in HLS or RGB color space"

This is due to the conversion from rgb space to hls when the input is rgb:

n plctrl.c,
void
plcmap1_calc( void )
//! Bin up cmap 1 space and assign colors to make inverse mapping easy.
//! Always do interpolation in HLS space.

This works:
call plscmap1l(.false., &
& (/0.0_plflt, 0.499_plflt, 0.501_plflt, 1.0_plflt /),&
& (/0.0_plflt, 0.0_plflt, 120.0_plflt, 120.0_plflt /),&
& (/0.2_plflt, 1.0_plflt, 1.0_plflt, 0.2_plflt /),&
& (/1.0_plflt, 1.0_plflt, 1.0_plflt, 1.0_plflt /) )

But not this:
call plscmap1l(.true., &
& (/0.0_plflt, 0.5_plflt, 1.0_plflt /),&
& (/1.0_plflt, 1.0_plflt, 0.0_plflt /),&
& (/0.0_plflt, 1.0_plflt, 1.0_plflt /),&
& (/0.0_plflt, 1.0_plflt, 0.0_plflt /) )

Either the documention should mention this but it stills buggy for me as this
function accepts rgb input.
Or remove the hls transformation and do the gradient with rgb values when the
input is in rgb.

Summary: wxWidgets dc and gc driver on uses cmap0 for text

Initial Comment:
When drawing text using the dc and gc wxWidgets driver it always uses cmap0
colours. Setting the foreground colour using cmap1 has no effect upon the text
colour. I think from looking at the code (but I have not checked) that the agg
wxWidgets text colour can be set by either cmap0 or cmap1. I've checked the psc
driver and this allows setting the colour using cmap1. This behaviour is not
documented in the manual as far as I can see.

This can be fixed by editing the wxPLDevDC::ProcessString function in
wxwidgets_dc.cpp and wxwidgets_gc.cpp - the appropriate lines are pretty
obvious.

I'm sorry I can't submit a patch but I only have access to a windows machine so
don't have access to diff, which I think is needed for creating patches

Summary: Example plplot-5.9.9/examples/f95/x09f.f90 has wrong bounds

Initial Comment:
The example has (cf. x02f.f90):

function arange_plflt_1( start, stop, step )
integer, intent(in) :: start, stop, step
real(kind=plflt), dimension((stop-start)/step) :: arange_plflt_1

but uses in plplot-5.9.9/examples/f95/x09f.f90

  integer, parameter :: xdim=99, nptsx=35
  real(kind=plflt)   ::  &
  xg1(xdim)

xg1 = coord_function( arange(0,nptsx) / dble(nptsx-1),  distort )

The latter is wrong: The LHS has the bounds (1:99) while the RHS has the bounds
(1:35).

I am running into issues building plplot because some requirements for desired
bindings are in non-standard locations on my systems. E.g., python on my
systems is python2.4, with relatively limited add on modules, and python2.6 is
the less old v2.6 with more modules which I want to have plplot
use. (Yes, I should make python2.6, or better 2.8 the default, but that is a
different kettle of fish).

I have seen other people having similar issues (e.g.
http://cmake.3232098.n2.nabble.com/CMAKE-LIBRARY-PATH-appears-not-to-work-properly-for-finding-libtcl-tt5044674.html#a5066554)

I have not looked at the Find_XXX code, but will concede that it is doing
complicated stuff, and while what it does is wrong for some purposes , it is
not clear that it is always (or even mostly) wrong. And changing its
behaviour, even if correct for some purposes, might foul up other uses.

Is it possible to just add addition CMake variables so the person compiling can
specify exactly which perl, tcl, assorted libraries, etc they wish to
use for the build. If nothing specified, go with the assorted Find_XXX
routines, which are fine for the most general cases, but allow me to override
when I know the Find_XXX routines are not getting good results in my
environment. It's a fair number of variables to add, but should mostly be
pretty simple, and allow for lots of flexibility w/out making it harder for
users in the more normal cases.

Summary: Unresolved external symbol when calling Plplot

Initial Comment:
I have a problem calling the plplotd.dll from a program. I am on Windows 7 and
using MSVS 10. I was able to buld Plplot with CMAKE with minimal probalems and
run the examples. I wrote a small test program to exercise the DLL using the C
interface. The program finds and reads plplot.h OK. It seems to find the *.lib
files OK and the *.dll files are available. When I add a call to a function
(e.g, plinit() ) the compiler complains about an "unreferenced external
symbol". This gets translated to c_plinit() which I gather from plplot.his
appropriate. Is there perhaps some calling connvention mismatch that I'm not
seeing?

Summary: qt drivers lose text in multipage portrait mode

Initial Comment:
When the making a multipage plot with a non-zero rotation (plsori(1) is needed
in eps for correct orientation in xfig), labels and annotations are missing
from all but the central subpage (assuming there is one). I think this is most
likely caused by either the clipping box for text or the text transform not
being correctly rotated.

The attached code will demonstrate the problem for the epsqt driver.

The problem occurs with all the qt family drivers I have tested.
The problem does not occur with the cairo family drivers.

Summary: F95 binding assumes INTEGER == int

Initial Comment:
In much of the F95 binding (and probably the F77 as well), integers are
declared without a kind parameter. This will result in incorrect results for
compilers where the C int type and the Fortran default integer are not of the
same length (e.g. the 64-bit version of g95).

strutil.f90 will not compile on such a system as the islen function is declared
as integer*4 in one place and default integer in another.

I would suggest, defining a plint kind that is set to be equal to c_int from
iso_c_binding for f95+. For f77 probably the only viable fix is to declare all
integers to be integer*4.

Summary: plstrf2c() called with integer instead of character array

Initial Comment:
In the F77 binding, the subroutine plstrf2c() called twice with an integer
array instead of a character array as the second argument. This happens in the
subroutines plstring() and plstring3(), in the source file
bindings/f77/sfstubs.f:
call plstrf2c(string,s1,maxlen)
where s1 is an integer array rather than a character array.

862 subroutine plstyl( n, mark, space )
863 integer :: n, mark, space

However, it should take arrays for mark and space, so I think it should be
either:
interface
subroutine plstyl( n, mark, space )
   integer :: n
   integer, dimension(n) :: mark, space
   end subroutine plstyl
end interface

or (better) provide a wrapper so that is appeas to be

At the end of all examples the window remains open, if another example is

It would be nice to have support for xor mode in the cairo drivers.

Summary: compile with tcl 8.6.0-3 and itcl 3.4.1-2

Initial Comment:
With the attached patch I was able to compile plplot-5.9.9 with tcl 8.6.0-3 and
itcl 3.4.1-2.

itcl was not enabled in cmake but I was unable to uncomment it. Even with clean
make and itcl unchecked, the conf tools searched for itcl on the system. After
installing itcl 3.4.1-2 and locating the valid path on configuration file, the
configuration completed but built failed.

1)There was a conflict of 'Tcl_Import' struct between plplot and new tcl
headers ("char * pattern" instead of "const char * pattern").

2)Also 'Tcl_Interp' struct does not seem to has any member "result".

These two rough-fixes (see the ugly patch) left the built process to finish. I
built it on an Arch-x64 box with GCC 4.7.2 and cmake 2.8.10.2.

Thanks and congratulations for your work!

Summary: PLplot build fails on cygwin 1.7.17

Initial Comment:
I attempted to build PLplot on cygwin 1.7.17 using a minimal
set of options for cmake to turn off all bindings. The result was
a failure to build one of the qt drivers/devices.
