[PLUG] Identifying Why One Web Site Will Not Load

2014-09-16 Thread Rich Shepard
I have no problems loading any Web site I want except for one:
grass.osgeo.org. It works for others (probably everyone in the world but me)
and just will not load here using Firefox, Opera, or Chromium. Ping works;
returns packets quickly.

Please suggest where I might look for the source of this problem, or test
I can run to identify what is blocking me.

TIA,

When you say "will not load" - what do you get when you attempt to load the
site?

When things get weird, I generally try to replicate the functionality of
whatever isn't working in single steps to see at which step it's failing.

You pinged, but did you check with other sources that the IP address you
got for this host (grass.osgeo.org) is the same as what others get? If not,
you can't know for sure just who or what you are pinging. I
get 140.211.15.75.

Once you verify that your DNS lookup was successful (returning the correct
record, not just any record), you can start looking at protocol problems.
Are you attempting to view this site via HTTPS? This site does not appear
to support that.

Next steps will depend heavily on what result you get when you try to view
the site.

You're right, it does work for (this limited test group of 1) others.

Perhaps you've gotten to the age where your shouts have become self reflexive.

Clear your browser's cache. Cached pages sometimes interfere with

Wes,

The status line reads, "connecting," and the in-use spinner on the address
bar goes counter-clockwise. For other sites, that lasts a second or two,
then the address bar spinner goes clockwise and the page loads.

Those steps are what are needed.

   Yep, 140.211.15.75

   Nope, only http.

Here's more to consider: I went looking for mirror sites; they are located
all over the world in two tiers, 1 and 2. The USA Tier 1 mirror also would
not connect so it would not load. The European Tier 1 and Tier 2 servers in
France, Germany, Italy, and Poland (two of 'em) all instantly popped up 404:
Page not found errors.

The only mirror I can access is http://grass.mirror.eruditium.org/index.php

The only recent change here is the minor version upgrade in Firefox, but
Opera and Chromium also will not connect to grass.osgeo.org.

Joe,

Yes, yes, and yes. Ping reports 140.211.15.75 and neither lynx nor links
connects to that site. However, I think that I see the problem, but have no
idea how it arose or what to do about it:

When I enter the IP address in firefox's address bar the page that loads
is for the Community Program Review page for the FOSS4G OSGEO Conference
that was held here in Portland last week, not to the main GRASS web site.

What do you see if you use the IP address in your browser?

Have you tried just running wget from a shell and watching what it does?

If it makes it all the way through then there's a problem with your browser.

If it hangs somewhere you'll be able to see exactly what fetch was hanging.

Are you using ad-blocking strategies? Maybe redirecting known ad sources in a
way that would cause a request to appear to hang?

Same problem occurs with firefox, opera, chromium, lynx, and links.
Adblock runs only on firefox.

And this is the only web site I've tried accessing that has this issue,
and I first noticed it only last Saturday. Always connected as quickly there

The fact that your browser can load http://140.211.15.75 but not
http://grass.osgeo.org pretty much eliminates any issue that could exist
between your workstation and the webserver. Remaining possibilities include
an element on the page which is interrupting loading, or a server
configuration which only affects your setup, or a small enough group that
you're the only one among us who belongs to that group.

It is quite irrational, I agree. That I could not load several of the

For grins and giggles (and too much time on my hands), I tried all
the mirrors listed on the grass.osgeo.org site. To wit:

USA:
quintex.com is down, both sites. Ping returns zero packets.

Sweden:
http://grass.milthi.me System is up, but server won't answer.

Czech Republic:
http://grass.fsv.cvut.cz System down; ping returns zero packets.

Romania:
http://grass.unibuc.ro System down; ping returns zero packets.

Korea:
http://pinus.gntech.ac.kr/grass Works

Japan:
http://wgrass.media.osaka-cu.ac.jp/grassh/ Works

India:
http://wgbis.ces.iisc.ernet.in/grass/Works

Indonesia:
http://grass.gis.co.id Site redirected to a shopping site,
http://www.dealdiskon.com/ (The Grass site has the correct
address, somebody is playing games.)

China:
http://grass.osgeo.cn/ Works

South Africa:
http://grass.mirror.ac.za Opens a page of links to many
mirrors. The grass.mirror.ac.az link re-opens the links page.
the ftp://grass.mirror.ac.za link works.

Namibia:
http://grass.polytechnic.edu.na/ Works

The wiki site also works.

Though I said that some of the systems were down, it's very
possible that there's been an Internet hiccup of some sort. It's
not like this sort of thing hasn't happened before.

Hope this helps, or at least adds a few data points.

The tool you need is tcptraceroute, then you can test the specific port(s) that
you can’t reach.

http://www.orgeo.org ?
