I know little about Android - my wife has one, with enhanced
texting intentionally turned off at her provider, making her
less sensitive to the Stagefright vulnerability.

What she really needs is a patched version of Android, which
the upstream network provider (ATT) and the phone manufacturer
(Motorola) will not provide for six-month-old phones.

So - does anyone understand Android well enough to teach us how
to update Androids, adding patches or new versions of the O.S.,
without bricking the phones or pissing off the providers?

It would be nice to know how to do this. When the vulnerability
becomes an exploit, and a billion Androids become useless, I
would like to help a friend or two get their farts-moan back.

Keith

I, too, have an Android, and since it, also, is ignored by the carrier
because it is 19 mo. old, I need to go to CyanogenMod or to a similar
replacement OS, and sure would like more knowledge before that happens.

[PLUG] TONIGHT: August PLUG Advanced Topics: Using Mozilla's Heka project for log and event stream processing

2015-08-18 Thread Michael Dexter

Portland Linux/Unix Group Advanced Topics Meeting Announcement

Who: Nathan Williams
What: Using Mozilla's Heka project for log and event stream processing
Where: Free Geek, 1731 SE 10th Avenue, Portland (Left Entrance)
When: Tuesday, August 18th, 2015 at 7pm
Why: The pursuit of technology freedom
Stream: http://pdxlinux.org/live/

Talk: A Practical Introduction to Scalable Stream Processing with Heka
and how the log and event processing system at Treehouse has evolved
from a typical Elasticsearch/Logstash/Kibana setup into a Heka-based
system. We will also discuss the why behind this move and where we are
headed.

Heka is an open source stream processing software system developed by
Mozilla. Heka is a “Swiss Army Knife” type tool for data processing,
useful for a wide variety of different tasks, such as:

* Loading and parsing log files from a file system.

* Accepting statsd type metrics data for aggregation and forwarding to
upstream time series data stores such as graphite or InfluxDB.

* Launching external processes to gather operational data from the local
system.

* Performing real time analysis, graphing, and anomaly detection on any
data flowing through the Heka pipeline.

* Shipping data from one location to another via the use of an external
transport (such as AMQP) or directly (via TCP).

* Delivering processed data to one or more persistent data stores.

https://github.com/mozilla-services/heka

Nathan is a sysadmin by trade who's been into Linux, automation and data
for the last 10 years and is currently working at Treehouse as a systems
developer.

[PLUG] Evolution has old folder which won't go away

2015-08-18 Thread Denis Heidtmann
I have an old folder associated with a now non-existent host. When I
restored all of Evolution from backup into a new install on the new system,
the pw for that old host is asked for. It is lost in the dustbin of
history. How do I delete the old folder? Any useful messages in it were
captured prior to the restore, so I just want to get rid of it, and so get
rid of the pesky message asking for the pw.

I suppose I could delete it the 12.04 system, uninstall and reinstall
Evolution, then do the backup-restore over again, but I am trying to avoid
all that.

Thanks,
-Denis

I would like to be able to do this, but I fear the instructions would
be over my head. Perhaps an intro to Android session as a precursor?
