When you initially set up the desktop networking, you gave it a name. The
wigi router dhcp knows what it is if it assigned an IP address lease so do

ssh @

Also, the netgear router has a list of all dhcp address assigned. log in
via

http://192.168.1.1 from any attached computer

if desktop seems to fire up but has no video after a move

1. reseat video card
2. check for bent pins on video cable
3. plug monitor into know good computer

Very comfortable with the commonly used options in network troubleshooting
such as interface, protocol/port, packet type, host, monitoring, etc.

Which is a reflection of how I've used it as a Network Engineer.

Troubleshooting client/server software communication would take some time
reading and tinkering.

The far more difficult thing with tcpdump is being able to make sense of
the output.

I have a one-liner in a script I wrote that only captures tcp syn

intimately, but i'm willing to hookup with what I need as needed.

Somewhere between these two, though my filtering chores have tended to

Great way of using nmap.

This way you can also see the IPs and machine name together with open ssh
ports:
sudo nmap -p 22 192.168.1.2- | awk '/Nmap scan report for /  { hostLine=$0;
hostLinePrinted=0; } /open / && hostLinePrinted==0  { print ""; print
hostLine; print $0; hostLinePrinted=1; next} /open / && hostLinePrinted==1  {
print $0;}'

Thanks, This is not user space mount though - it requires root access and
imagine having 15 users not sharing passwords. This is the obstacle to using
SMB on Linux as I see it.

If you put the password to a file and protect it, then there is no user
separation/access control as all the files on the SMB share will be owned by
single user. If you figure out a way around mount for a user, and you have two
different users trying to mount the same thing using different users - then
you are toast too. If a user forgets to umount then you need root intervention
too.

I do not want to sound negative about usefulness of SMB on Linux - I was
really hoped that someone knows how to make it work as per Unix/Linux. :-)

Anyway, let's not hijack this post to SMB bashing.
