Well, that's not uncommon with my finger. :-)

I thought that might have been the case. Unless I loaded VirtualBox and
then my Win2000 virtual machine with Corel Cadd on it, I'm not sure I'll
have any real use for the stylus. And I haven't use the Cadd program for
quite awhile.

I wondered what that cavern was for. It's empty on my maching and, since I
have the Cross stylus, there's no need to spend the money asked for a
gen-u-wine Levono stylus.

I just tried my finger. Nothing. The stylus housed on the right side of
the case, next to the PgDn key works fine.

The stylus works as a pointing device on mine under Ubuntu 16.04. I
don't know what module loaded. It was just part of the install.

A question for you electrical engineers: could a dead battery be the cause
of the problems I had with the ThinkPad OS installation?

Preparing to continue configuring the notebook/tablet, I disconnected the
A/C power cord from the machine. Instant darkness: blank screen; no
indicator lights. Won't start unless it's plugged in.

I wrote to the vendor and asked them to send me a replacement, 9-cell,
battery. If they dither I'll just buy one and downgrade my eBay ratings.

Computers can be so trying. I viewed every BIOS option as Ed suggested,
and this time it started installing packages. But, it had difficulty reading
many and the error file ran out of room.

Switched to another console. Shut down the system. Restarted it. Redid the
partitioning using cfdisk and made / 5G larger. Now it's installing
everything.

When it's all set up I'll install the watcom digitizing package and see if
the touch screen works. That could be interesting.

All kernel modules appear to load when it boots; if I can use setup to
assign swap and filesystems to mount points and select what and how to
install it should take the next step.

I'll check the BIOS and see if there's anything unusual there.

I would stick with the Slackware - Installation subforum on LQ.

As for your issue, it could be as simple as an odd setting in the BIOS,
or a kernel module not loading at boot. Slackware makes very few
changes to the upstream packages.

David,

My LQ experiences have been few but eventually satisfactory. Perhaps
because this is a weekend there were fewer responses.

I'll keep serverfault and stackexchange in mind.

There is a Thinkpad mailing list:

The linux-thinkpad mailing list home page is at:
http://mailman.linux-thinkpad.org/mailman/listinfo/linux-thinkpad

Not much traffic, but I've had good luck there in the past. I'm still
subscribed, and I remember reading just the other day about a problem
similar to yours, although I think it was a very recent model that was
affected. Apparently Lenovo paired with Microsoft to do something with
the disk drives to make them faster. The only fix at this time is to
install the latest Ubuntu, which has modifications so it can be
installed. Again, I don't recall which model was affected, and I have
deleted the thread.

There must be a way for distributions other than the Ubuntus to run on
this hardware.

[PLUG] Which linuxquestions.org forum most appropriate?

2016-10-23 Thread Rich Shepard
Yesterday I received a used Lenovo ThinkPad x200 and tried to install
Slackware-14.2/x86_64 on it using my external optical drive.

The system booted off the distribution DVD (after I set up the BIOS to
look at the optical drive first), cfdisk allowed me to partition the drive,
and setup allowed me to assign sda1 to /, sda2 to swap, and sda3 to /home.
Nothing to see here, move along. So I did.

Choosing to run a full installation I pressed the [Enter] key. No optical
drive spinup, and a message box displayed telling me the installation is
complete and I can reboot the computer. Well, no. Nothing was installed.

Not having this experience before, I posted a description of the problem
in the Laptops and Notebooks forum on linuxquestions.org. There have been
168 voyeurs and one response to my question about designating sda1 bootable.
Nothing about why no istallation when the drive is seen by the system and
works as expected until time to install everything.

Might I see useful responses if I repost to either the Slackware or
ThinkPad fora instead of where it is? I'd like to get this done today as all
my portables are currently down and I need to get them all back in working
order.
