I have an older Lenovo T43 [purchased used several years ago]
whose power management software has an option for that. This is a
Windows only machine. I've not investigated what's available for
my Linux machine.

I've got an X200 running CentOS 6 with the lid closed. The only time I
pop the lid open is when I want a local console, usually for rebooting
into a new kernel.

Laptops with a dock make great home servers because the UPS is built
in. Assuming, that is, you can live without redundant disks, ECC
memory, and all the other niceties of server-class hardware. :-)

I've had laptops get too hot on me running with them closed, thats probably
why many don't let you do this. A new flexi one like that might not have
that problem...
