Actually I thought the relevant lists were semantic rather than
phonetic oriented.
Then again I've erred B4 ;/

I have word lists for password cracking. I don't know if it has
everything. Somewhere I have lists generated from Project Gutenberg, but
those are real old.

Even if none of them seem to have "phonon" (speaking of Richard's
reference to Scrabble).

Bingo. /usr/share/dict/ has several word lists.

I knew it was in there, someplace.

Sir, be careful what you ask for. You *DID* say "_all_ the words
in the English language."

If you are looking "free" [as in free beer], there are lists of
the N most common English words [ N being a few thousand]. The
lists are aimed at English as Second Language. If you are looking
for rare words there are lists aimed a Scrabble(TM) players.
Never checked price or availability in electronic format. If you
don't mind a dated list that would need some pre-processing I
believe there are dictionaries in the Gutenberg Project.

YMMV ;/

/usr/share/dict/ used to be the standard.
Improved spell checkers don't use an alpabetical plain text file anymore.

well, that's disappointing.

Aspell has some binary format.

You might install the mythes package - its word index is |
so you can parse that.

A bit of Googling brought good news though.
https://superuser.com/questions/137957/how-to-convert-aspell-dictionary-to-simple-list-of-words

replace the PL given in the example with en and you'll have a list of words.

Something other than /usr/share/dict/american-english

It exists in Ubuntu. Red Hat/Centos doesn't have it by default, but maybe
it's an optional package we don't install at work.

yum search dictionary does show this, however:

words.noarch : A dictionary of English words for the /usr/share/dict
directory

Debian and its derivatives include the wamerican, wbritish and
wcanadian packages, which feature large lists of words, mostly for
spell-checking purposes. The files are plain text, one word per line.
