On this screen you’re able to set up and check your account privacy
settings. Under “Likes and Subscriptions,” you can check the box to make
sure any videos you like and any channels you subscribe to stay private
and confidential. Under “Search and Contacts,” you can control who can
contact you, share your videos, and find you by email address."

I saw a link to another article about how people who have YouTube
channels can capture email addresses of subscribers. Maybe that's what's
happening here.

Then if that's not what's going on, I'd have him contact YouTube
directly about his specific privacy concerns.

But generally these days, you'd have to invest some serious time and
energy to have any degree of privacy on the internet. I aim for
anonymity and obfuscation with the smallest time & energy investment.

Also, you can use YouTube anonymously. You don't have to have an account
to watch videos. If he wants all the "features" of YouTube he can create
an alternate email address for his account. There are plenty of fee
throw away / single use email addresses to be had on the Internet.

That separate accounts will work only until someone who knows him will
email him or view his FB page.

Real privacy online is probably possible for a limited time, but
extraordinarily difficult. It is definitely beyond keeping the private time
useful.

Re: [PLUG] [OT?] Internet privacy? ?? ???

2018-02-02 Thread Larry Brigman
Clicking on a link in a YouTube video could get that type of information to
a source that could/would use it,
as the link could take you off the youtube site completely.
Any site that he connects can collect any information that the browser has
configured as to his identity.

Also without any clicking, he could receive spam email that looks like it
was extracted related to his viewing habits
but be totally unrelated.

I do not know if you are "PARANOID" or "ACCURATE".
As I compulsively avoid social media, I've no idea of what questions to
ask to determine what is happening.

He has associated the publication of his email address with videos he
has viewed.

My own experience shows that YouTube keeps track of what videos I've
watched and, no doubt using Google's technology, gives me more options
similar to ones I've watched. Sometimes that's useful. Sometimes it's
not. But from the descriptions you've given, it sounds to me like he's
just seeing what YouTube thinks he wants to see. How that relates to
email, I have no idea.

That makes two of us.

He has apparently seen something to cause him to believe his email
address is being published..

He, as any sane person would, finds that offensive.

As I emphatically avoid all the social media, I've no idea how to
approach the issue.

[PLUG] [OT?] Internet privacy? ?? ???

2018-02-02 Thread Richard Owlett

Called my brother to wish him a "Happy Birthday".
As I'm the geek sibling, he asked a geek type question.
He has been viewing youtube(sp?) videos.
He suspects they have been publishing his email address.
He objects.

I asked about contact info in the "privacy" statement - he found none.
I have no expertise as I avoid Facebook, twitter etc as the plague they are.
For unknown reasons he dose not wish to complain to local Better
Business Bureau or the state Attorney General.

At the minimum, "What questions should I be asking him?"

I'm using BCC (blind carbon copy) to inform him on how I'm attempting to
ask questions that will elicit useful input.

For my brother's benefit, this thread is view-able at

My brother has privacy concerns which I wish to respect.
I wish him to be able to access the responses I get.

Re: [PLUG] Domain dead; Mailman sends monthly reminders [FINAL NOTE]

2018-02-02 Thread Rich Shepard

On Thu, 1 Feb 2018, Rich Shepard wrote:

A curios situation. The SQL Ledger fork, ledger123, died some time in the
past few years without notice to those of us who used the software for
business bookkeeping or those of us on the mail list. I moved all
bookkeeping (business and personal to GnuCash) so this did not bother --
or affect -- me.

Armaghan responded to my message sent to his gmail account and he writes
that he'll straighten out everything. This morning I did a couple of final
checks and documented the strange state of the domains and web sites. I
present this here just to close this thread.

According to 'whois' ledger123.com expired last December, but
ledger123.org was just renewed for another year. However, www.ledger123.org
does not exist while www.ledger123.com brings up a working site (with a
copyright date of 2018). Huh?

On the .com site the mailing list links point to the .org site. I've no
idea of the ledger123 status because of the inconsistencies between the .com
and .org TLDs. E-mail to sql-ledger-unsubscr...@ledger123.org (from the
displayed web page) and to the .com name produce no responses.

My suspicion is that ledger123's dead and he's moved on to other things,
further east than London.

Whadda' mess,

Rich
