Re: [PLUG] What to do First Thursday?

2020-04-28 Thread elcaseti .
I've heard Jitsi Meet works well for large groups. I've used Signal with
medium sized groups. I'd like to hear how Signal works with larger groups,
as it is the main tool I use to communicate with folks.

Re: [PLUG] What to do First Thursday?

2020-04-28 Thread Tomas Kuchta
You have pretty nice spreadsheet - I used Google Hangouts - it works great
as well as Jitsi - works well using chrome and on Android.

I do not know what is Discord or what is IRC. And I do not have any
teletypes - just a good collection of Linux laptops, desktops and servers.

Will I be able to join without a teletype, on Linux and creating tons of
accounts?

Re: [PLUG] What to do First Thursday?

2020-04-28 Thread wes
As for criteria, I would mostly be looking for deficiencies rather than
efficiencies. Does it break down after the 10th participant joins? 20th? I
don't think we have the manpower available to test at the 100 user level,
but the more the better.

"Breaking down" would consist of the video or audio quality degrading
significantly, or an inability for new participants to join, or any other
breakdown in communication we observe.

We could also look for factors like the interface. How many participants'
video feeds can we see at once? How does it handle audio coming from
multiple sources at once?

My 2¢ would be to focus on trying out FOSS-friendly conferencing solutions.
Or even, dare I say, IRC. Or, to venture even farther out on limb, IRC over

What do you mean by "old way", are you referring to old versions? You'll
need to provide more specifics about the programs you are running, and
their dependencies. LAMP stacks tend to be supported over very long time
periods so all you need to do is make sure you install the correct packages
from the ubuntu repo, and then bring over your config files.

If you can define what packages were used on the "old" system, someone here
can probably guide you to the newer version.
- Webserver name/version
- MySQL version
- PHP version
- Additional PHP modules

Whatever program you are working with should have a list of dependencies
documented somewhere.

Note that these are just first steps. There are other factors to consider
in terms of your httpd and database setup to actually get it to work and
the internet isn't going to provide you with a clear and concise answer
without a massive amount of information from your end.

Re: [PLUG] What to do First Thursday?

2020-04-28 Thread Ben Koenig
Since the list of tools is so large, it might be worth trying them on a
larger time scale. Run a series of talks, each one focusing on a select
number of tools. Someone just needs to manage the list and send out a
notification in advance of the talk to inform participants which tools they
should work on installing.

Each talk could end with an "excerise for the user" which would be to work
on installing the meeting tool required for the next talk. Trying to find
the perfect tool for the job among a sea of options is very intimidating,
even for tech savvy users.

Is anyone here interested in a recurring event to run through all the
options? This would be something that occurs over the next several months.

Re: [PLUG] What to do First Thursday?

2020-04-28 Thread John Sechrest
As a possible event, you could do a "speed dating" networking event with
meetaway and have people mingle.

Or to mirror the Lab experience, you could do zoom with breakout rooms. We
do that weekly now with the 601club.

These would be just social gathering more than topic oriented.

Both are easy to set up.

Re: [PLUG] What to do First Thursday?

2020-04-28 Thread John Sechrest
Just yesterday I was in a conversation about tools and I started a
spreadsheet of different video / remote tools.

So far people have mentioned:

Zoom
Kast
Crowdcast
Slack
Google Hangouts
Google duo
MS Teams
discord
Wechat
Whatsapp
Facebook/facetime
Kakao
Line
Youtube live
Meetaway

It would be interesting to me to know what criteria/features you would use
to evaluate these.

I am trying to run workshops of 25-35 people.

And on May13 I have a 250 person event I am trying to run. So I am all ears
about how you are thinking about video tools and evaluating them.

I just saw a conversation on the facilitators mailing list about the use of
Miro and Mural and the bandwidth requirements. So that is also an Issue.
