Potentially hot take: Office 365 in a browser is basically at feature parity 
with the desktop version. It runs well in Firefox and even better in chromium. 
Give that a spin and see if it does what he needs?

Cron.daily runs at 0625 on Ubuntu. I’d check /etc/cron.daily for scripts.
