Re: [PLUG] Upgrading Garmin GPS firmware

The tricky part, if I remember correctly, is that those OSM maps &
instructions for the older Garmins are out of date. Garmin has stopped
using that software to interface with the devices, & replaced it with a
very different program. Probably still doable, but we have to figure out
how to make it work by trial & error.

As I understand it, the main reason for using OSM maps on a Garmin is to
have free up to date maps. I hope you're right about putting maps in
different directories & then selecting the map you want at boot time. That
would be awesome!

There are two different actions we're discussing. Firmware upgrades are done
from the console, or a DOS 'window' in Microsoft-world. It's been a few y
years since I did this but I boot the laptop from the DOS-formated flash
drive which has (I think) DOS-6.x installed. Then I run the firmware .exe
file with the GPS attached to another USB port. I'll check the details
before doing this, of course.

Ja, from what I've read, an SD card is usually what you store the OSM map
on. It's unclear whether or not you can use more than one country map (or
in the USA, more than one state). If it turns out to be a big hassle to
switch between the Washington state & Oregon OSM map on Garmin, then I'll
probably go back to using my very out of date (~2010) Garmin map.

Map upgrades usually can be done using only the Garmin Camp GUI. And we need
to pay for it.

Perhaps multistate OSM maps can be put in separate diretories on the SD card
and selected when the GPS is turned on. Haven't tried this, though.

I'll boot a laptop into DOS from the flash drive and upgrade the Garmin
system firmware that way.

times my 2009-vintage map doesn't have the streets built since then. OSM
should work on an SD card.

I have a small collection of Garmin GPS devices that I really like to use.
I've bought all of them used over the years, mostly at thrift stores for
~$5.00 each. I think using WINE to upgrade the firmware carries a risk of
bricking them. Your best bet is to install Windows on bare metal & use
that to update the firmware.
On a related note, I'd like to try installing Openstreetmap on my Garmin

[PLUG] Upgrading Garmin GPS firmware

2020-10-11 Thread Rich Shepard

Garmin provides only Windoze and Mac packages to upgrade firmware on their
GPS receivers.

Does anyone know if this works with wine?

I think I have a version of DOS on a flash drive for this situation, but no
longer have the little Dell 2100 that I could boot into that (after copying
the .exe file to it).

I'm open to all suggestions.
