[OT] Video camera (and other) batteries

2009-10-05 Thread Gabriel Gunderson
PLUG:

I'm wondering if anyone can make a recommendation for buying batteries
online. I'm not typically in the market and haven't worked with
anyone in the past. Add to that, my fear of rip-off, cheap, only last
6-months and then ruin your equipment batteries, and you can see why
I'm reaching out for your advise. I have no trust for the little
black boxes and very little for online resellers.

So, the obvious answer is to buy from an established name and pay full
price. Where is the fun in that?

Recommendations? Cautions?

Thanks,

Currently I have 6 computers in my home, all run Linux except one
(Windows Vista) and all are hard wired with cat 6 throughout the house.
I have read about a NAS device being used to store backups and data and
such items, and I believe I can build one. But is there a unit that this
group would recommend to purchase off the shelf so to speak.

Many of these NAS devices run linux and are highly customizable. You
may want to look for that when you purchase one. Someone from iomega
demonstrated their NAS product a few months ago at SLLUG. Hopefully
someone else on this list attended and can share the name, it seemed it
was very customizable(though I'm not sure it's on the market yet).

Most of these devices work by using SMB file sharing. The Linux
software is called Samba. You can set up a samba mount, so that every
time your Linux computers boot they mount the share drive to a specific
directory(like /share) you may want to set it so it is user mountable
so that the users on the computers can connect or disconnect to the
share when ever they want.

One of the draw backs of smb is permissions. I'm not sure if there are
better handling of them now available, but you way want to look for
something that handles NFS (network file system) which is built into the
Linux kernel and handles UNIX style permissions. Not sure if there is a
windows client for NFS but you can set up both systems so that Linux
uses NFS and the Windows one uses SMB.

Kyle

My next question is I have upwards of 10K scanned pictures and
documents, as well as over 300 DVD's that I created. Would these items
be stored on the NAS and then accessed from any machine in my home.

If someone can explain the basics to me I would be forever greatful.

I once used Batteries Plus:

They have brick-and-mortar stores in Orem, Sandy, and Midvale.

I remember a discussion on the PLUG or SLLUG last year that recommended a couple
other local suppliers, but I can't find it in the archives. Perhaps I'm just
crazy.

Hi Gabe,

I just went to BatteriesPlus ( http://www.batteriesplus.com/ ) in Orem
for the first time the other day. I needed some small watch
batteries. They had tons of batteries and the ones I needed were
cheaper than other places I had looked. I usually by my generic
batteries from RadioShack or Costco. Granted, they were not video
camera batteries. I have never really looked for video camera
batteries. Might be something worth going back to the manufacturer for.

Cheers,
Jonathan

Where to get laptop RAM in SLC area?

2009-10-05 Thread Charles Curley
I have a Lenovo R51, which takes a 1 GB PC2700 DDR SODIMM 333 MHz
memory card. Alas, the memory card I have for it just died, and I am
down to the 256 MB that came with the computer. Since I am coming into
Sandy for the UTOSC, I figure I should grab a replacement while I am
there. Is there a store convenient to the conference venue which is
likely to have what I need?

thanks

One point for Linux: Ubuntu is slow but fully operational in 256MB of
RAM (244 excluding the video RAM). Try that with Vista or W7. :-)
