If you like Paint.net, you should check out Pinta which is modeled after
paint.net. It's available in the repositories.

Thank you to all that responded.

Here is the list:

HTML: http://www.kompozer.net/
HTML: http://www.nvu.com/
video: http://www.kdenlive.org/
Image: Darktable for a lightroom style Photo post-processing tool
Image: gimp

HTML: NVU became Kompozer which became bluegriffon.

Video: Cinellera - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cinelerra and Lightworks
 http://www.lwks.com/

Video: openshot.org

Also one person suggesting editing the files in the docroot and
refreshing the browser to see the changes. That is what I do now. It
works great for programming and minor changes in the presentation layer,
however for a complete layout it is pain painstakingly slow. Of course
I am not a designer so maybe design just takes time no matter how you do
it.

I have used Paint.net on my Windows laptop and find it to be ok. I would
like to go fully Linux, however I am going to need to install a vm and
set up Win in it sooner or later, so maybe at that point the Win v Linux
issue will be mute. Of course the main reason I stick with Linux is I
know at some point I will need to because M$ will do something really
stupid and I will be forced to.

Thank you to everyone for your help!!

I'll second that.  Make sure you load the latest version, 0.9.8,

can just reload and continue on with what you were doing.

Yes, IP addresses identify hosts such as sdf.org (192.95.73.15) and on
sdf.org a web server is running and listening on port 80. When you type
http://sdf.org into Firefox it looks up the IP address and connects to
port 80, the default port for the HTTP protocol.

/etc/services list common ports and services. See man services. Of
course, you can configure a service to run on a non-standard port. In
the case of SSH (sftp is part of the SSH package) the port is configured
in /etc/ssh/sshd_config.

Nmap can be used to find open ports on a server but should only be used
if you understand the legal implications of its use.

Re: sftp in caja

2014-06-24 Thread Michael Havens
I realize there is filezilla but I can't get it to connect. It tells me:

Status: Connecting to 192.168.0.2:21...
Status: Connection attempt failed with "ECONNREFUSED - Connection refused
by server".
Error: Could not connect to server

Should I try another port?

Re: sftp in caja

2014-06-24 Thread Michael Havens
actually what I would much rather have is some thing like an scp in caja so
I can drag files to and from the remote box (I just discovered I can't do
that with sftp when I tried dragging a file to the box with the sftp
connection). Or otherwlse tell me how it can be done with sftp and caja.

sftp in caja

2014-06-24 Thread Michael Havens
I got caja up and one of the book marks is a link to sftp to a remote box.
I can go in and look at the files in my other box and that is good. Well,
there is another computer I want to bookmark too. So I scroll down the side
panel to 'Browse Network' and the network screen opens a 'Windows Network'
icon. I double click that and an info window appears stating:

   Unable to mount location
Failed to retrieve share list from server: No such file or directory

So my question is how do I fix this?
