Failed to start session
Hi all, I am having a problem that is running me around in circles. I have an open directory server providing authentication for my users and use Salt to manage my configurations. I have a workstation that I recently reloaded with Ubuntu 14.04 and everything looked great through Salt but I have a problem logging into the machine. This is where it gets weird. I have 2 sessions available, lightdm and xfce. Lightdm is default and existing users cannot log in (it says "failed to start session") however, if I change to xfce or log in on a terminal I can log in. After logging in via xfce or terminal, I can then log in as an existing user. It is a little more weird when I decided to stop bugging one of my users during troubleshooting and created a new test account and was able to log in without issue. The only thing I can see in my logs are: auth.log:Jul 7 13:33:09 ops1 lightdm: pam_succeed_if(lightdm:auth): requirement "user ingroup nopasswdlogin" not met by user "brokenUsername" auth.log:Jul 7 13:33:13 ops1 lightdm: pam_unix(lightdm:auth): authentication failure; logname= uid=0 euid=0 tty=:0 ruser= rhost= user=brokenUsername lightdm/lightdm.log:[+79.51s] DEBUG: Session pid=5740: Authenticate result for user brokenUsername: Success lightdm/lightdm.log:[+79.51s] DEBUG: Session pid=5740: User brokenUsername authorized I though it had something to do with home directory creation but like I said, the new test account I created is working fine. Any thoughts are appreciated.
