Flatpak is an alternate to snap.
Try them both out and see what you like best.

Re: Linux Basics

2023-11-29 Thread AZ Pete via PLUG-discuss

Thanks for the tip.
I've also found these two channels very good for learning:

Learn Linux TV (he also has curated playlists on specific topics):

The Urban Penguin (he also has several very good Pluralsight courses)

Hey I am trying to determine what I do not know about Linux (Ubuntu).

I watched each of these videos by Networkchuck.  He covers a lot and if there
is anyone wanting to build more Linux muscle, then I would recommend this
series.  I found a few things that I did not know or that I might need to know
more about.  He does not cover logs nor does he cover Linux networking.

All in all I think it is a good set of videos for anyone wanting to level up
that may be, like me, self taught, that may have some missing skills.

You will know everything you should know about linux once you have installed
gentoo once without assistance (but documentaton is OK), and then compiled
chromium a single time. The compiling chromium part is the most important
lesson.

Not a VM, but I just use the Snap version of Firefox which runs it under
Apparmor and a bunch of other filesystem chroots. That's on Ubuntu. You'd have
to make sure the Snap setup for your distro has confinement setup correctly.
Also, if you run your other desktop apps as Snaps you get that same confinement
on those.

Firefox and VM

2023-11-29 Thread Steve B via PLUG-discuss
I've been using Apparmor and Firejail to secure Firefox for the past few
years. However, for sometime now I'm finding that Firefox profiles for one
or the other do not appear to be maintained. Consequently I'm looking to
move my use of Firefox to a VM.

My dilemma is what OS to use for the VM. Alpine or Damn Small were my first
considerations. Small footprint, just the essentials and then add Firefox.

Is anyone here doing something similar? Looking for suggestions as to which
OS to use.
