Re: localhost

2021-10-09 Thread Michael via PLUG-discuss
the browser shows the error as:
The site could be temporarily unavailable or too busy. Try again in a few
moments.
If you are unable to load any pages, check your computer’s network
connection.
If your computer or network is protected by a firewall or proxy, make
sure that Firefox is permitted to access the Web.

I need to specify a port. Cool. That's all I needed to know.

compile error

2021-09-18 Thread Michael via PLUG-discuss
It isn't really an error.
../sysdeps/unix/sysv/linux/x86/jmp_buf-ssp.sym >
/mnt/lfs/sources.glibc-2.34/build/jmp_buf-ssp.ht
I don't get it. I had it compiled to section 8 of LFS but now I can't get
it past section 5.5 I get to make install and it gets to a section and it
just keeps repeating itself (it flashes between two screens). I've
recompiled it at least 3 times and get the same error (the repeat). I've
got the terminal full screened and it looks the same with each flash. The
first linein this message is the last line of the screen and it says it is
constantly writing to the same file which right there says something is
wrong. I wonder if it is my computer?
How could I discover if it is? Further; if it is and right now the error is
in the compile how long do you think my puter has left with us?

Interesting: I wanted to label the partition arch was installed on (makes
it easier to mount as the device label changes between sdb and
sdc) but discovered that arch isn't installed on a partition and as far as
I can tell there isn't a file system on it. At least I loaded gparted to
inspect it and the box that shows the partition/size/filesystem type is
grayed out and when I go to the partition pull down everything in it is
grayed out

command prompt is what I want. Before I head over there is there anything I
should do from the host computer before I leave the world of gui (like
maybe I should download something and put it onto the USB) and enter the
land of archlinux?

2021-08-24 Thread Michael via PLUG-discuss
OOPS. I hit return after typin rm -rf it deleted everything in /home. So I
restored my system and now this happens:
bmike1@bmike1-desktop:~$ sudo apt install gparted
[sudo] password for bmike1:
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
The following additional packages will be installed:
  gparted-common
Suggested packages:
  gpart reiser4progs udftools
E: Could not get lock /var/cache/apt/archives/lock. It is held by process
84872 (synaptic)
N: Be aware that removing the lock file is not a solution and may break
your system.
E: Unable to lock directory /var/cache/apt/archives/
bmike1@bmike1-desktop:~$

it happened before and as a solution killed the roces. It happened again so
I must find a solution. WIll someone share their wisdom?

Thank you so much Matt. As fir the UEFI issue I'm just doing what LFS
recommends in the process of building their OS; and the same reason for the
reasoning behind the /opt and /usr/src filesystem debacle.

accepting that line so I decided to try it with one directory. I even

What am I doing wrong?

2021-08-06 Thread Michael via PLUG-discuss
in my fourth attempt at linux from scratch this is the script I'm trying to run:
 ../configure \
 --prefix=/usr \
 --build=$(../config.guess) \
 --host=$LFS_TGT\
 --disable-nls \
 --enable-shared\
 --disable-werror \
 --enable-64-bit-bfd\
 2>&1 | tee $LFS/rootdir/buildlogs/6.17BinutilsIImyconflog

It is producing a makefile But is not producing the
6.17BinutilsIImyconflog. Well if it is producing it I don't know where
it is. it is supposed to be in $LFS/rootdir/buildlogs/ ($LFSdefined
as /mnt/lfs)

I need help creating a partition.

2021-07-25 Thread Michael via PLUG-discuss
gparted is failing me.It is a logical partition(/dev/sdc10) labled
/home. It is 48 GB large. here is my attempt at using mkfs:

michael@MyNUC:~$ sudo mkfs.ext4 -F -O ^64bit -L '/opt' '/dev/sdc10' 00:00:03
[sudo] password for michael:
mke2fs 1.45.5 (07-Jan-2020)

mke2fs 1.45.5 (07-Jan-2020)
/dev/sdc10 contains a ext4 file system
created on Sun Jul 25 21:38:59 2021
64-bit filesystem support is not enabled. The larger fields afforded
by this feature enable full-strength checksumming. Pass -O 64bit to
rectify.

Hmmm not enough space? But gparted says:

All operations completed successfully though the error report says
otherwise (including saying I created a MSDOS partition when I created
ext4 partitions).

(error report)
48.00 GiB of unallocated space within the partition.
To grow the file system to fill the partition, select the partition
and choose the menu item:

and I run the partition check and the result is:

resize partition

2021-07-22 Thread Michael via PLUG-discuss
So I was looking at my disk partitions and noticed I don't have a swap
partition. I guess I probably should as I am going to do LFS and only
have 8 GB of ram. I then shut down the machine and started a live
version but got the following error:

GParted 0.25.0 --enable-libparted-dmraid --enable-online-resize

Libparted 3.2

Move /dev/sda6 to the right and shrink it from 195.63 GiB to 184.89
GiB 00:00:00( ERROR )

calibrate /dev/sda6 00:00:00( SUCCESS )

path: /dev/sda6 (partition)
start: 2048
end: 410267647
size: 410265600 (195.63 GiB)
check file system on /dev/sda6 for errors and (if possible) fix them
00:00:00( ERROR )

e2fsck -f -y -v -C 0 /dev/sda6 00:00:00( ERROR )

e2fsck 1.42.13 (17-May-2015)
/dev/sda6 has unsupported feature(s): metadata_csum
e2fsck: Get a newer version of e2fsck!

So I update the apt repo and tried to update e2fsck. Unfortunately
there is no e2fsck; only e2fsck-static and that didn't help any. Does
anyone know how to fix this?

Today I ran the update manager to get the new version of darktable

dependencies. Luckily the problem was easily resolved by installing
the package (apt-utils) separately. I didn't have to waste anyones

Re: tiff file license

2021-01-23 Thread Michael via PLUG-discuss
I guess it doesn't really matter. I was assuming that because a tiff
is a larger file it would have more data in it. What started this
line of thought is that someone didn't know how to edit a cr3 file in
darktable and it was recommended that he convert to DNG and edit that.
I just always thought tiff was better because it was a larger file.

a flight pattern thing and. I don't know surprise me.

Re: HDR with GIMP

2020-12-05 Thread Michael via PLUG-discuss
Goofy me the instructions said it would not be able to create
directories and so to create the directories manually and then he gave
the commands. Well it did not give me the error I expected so I
thought I had a different error. Well, I was wrong. I entered the
mkdir commands and everything ran.

yes I had otto's ppa then I installed the flatpak but I want to
use darktable to load raws into gimp so I had to reinstall the apt
version. The gentleman that told me that I needed to reinstall the apt
version then told me otto's version was no longer maintained and he
gave me a ppa that is current..

install BABL

2020-11-12 Thread Michael via PLUG-discuss
This is bizarre. I installed gimp with apt (I had it installed with
flAtpak) and it wouldn't start after the install. so I opened up a
terminal to capture any error. This is what I got:

BABL version too old!

GIMP requires BABL version 0.1.78 or later.
Installed BABL version is 0.1.74.

Somehow you or your software packager managed
to install GIMP with an older BABL version.

Please upgrade to BABL version 0.1.78 or later.

would someone help me put the right version in? I tried to apt it in
but that didn't work.
