Re: what do you think of starlink as a dns?

2022-03-29 Thread Snyder, Alexander J via PLUG-discuss
I don't think Starlink has a "Five Nines" (99.9%) uptime rating yet,
and I doubt they (or any satellite providers) would.

I would not consider a DNS source that didn't have rock solid availability
at its core.

So you can host a DNS server that is kept online by Starlink, but it would
be like the 20th entry in my failover list, because if we get there, that
means everything else is a smoldering mess!!!

remove any obvious duplicates or disable each one individually and see
which one is causing the error, then deal with fixing that one directly.

In my experience, you cannot record different virtual desktops in the same
manner that you can a second or third monitor.

it means creating a better learning experience for you.

Let me know. Happy to help!

The IP address range *127.0.* *0.0 – 127.255.* *255.255* is reserved for
loopback, i.e. a Host's self-address, also known as localhost address. This
loopback IP address is managed entirely by and within the operating system.

Type: echo "$PATH"

to view the folders in your user path. Root will have a different PATH.

You can add to it by typing:

export PATH="$PATH:/your/new/directory"

To append to the end.

Put that at the bottom of your "~/.bashrc" file.

Internal DNS Zone ...

2021-08-11 Thread Snyder, Alexander J via PLUG-discuss
Hi Folks --

Looking for some guidance on setting up an internal DNS zone, on an
externally resolvable domain.

I own: snyderfamily.co

I have set up "int.snyderfamily.co" to be a CNAME record that is set to "
internalzone.ddns.net", so that when you ping "int.snyderfamily.co" you get
my firewall "98.165.64.38"

I have set up a NAT so that all external port 53/853 queries that hit my
WAN are redirected to my internal active directory server (10.0.10.3:53).

If I were to then create a record for say "plex.int.snyderfamily.co" -- I
*should* get "10.20.0.3", as the response (*just the information, not the
IP, which is non-routable*) right?

I need someone to help validate my logic or fill in the gap where I'm
missing.

Right now, things are set up under "snyderfamily.int" ... but I'm not
understanding do I change my FW hostname to be "int.snyderfamily.co"
since that is where the Public IP resolves?

Would I then reconfigure AD to be "ns1.int.snyderfamily.co" where the NAT
is sending the DNS queries (*or at least should be sending them*)?

This is where it all breaks down in my mind and I get a whomping of anxiety
-- because I don't want to fubar my existing (working) "snyderfamily.int"
setup.

Your perspective, insight, and guidance on this are appreciated!

Thank you!!!

Re: using a thumb drive as a partition.

2021-07-21 Thread Snyder, Alexander J via PLUG-discuss
Flash memory indeed has limited write cycles. However, by now it is
unlikely that you'll encounter this within the normal lifetime of such a
card. Usually, this is in the order of 100,000 write cycles today and SD
cards include circuitry to manage wear-leveling, that is, spread out writes
over the storage media evenly to avoid "hot spots"—pages that are written
too frequently and therefore failing early.

Information stored on the card is safe even in magnetic fields because the
information is not stored magnetically (contrary to hard drives or floppy
disks).

As for storage conditions ... you shouldn't store them in mud, water, lava,
or other harmful conditions. You probably also shouldn't put them on
railways and let trains drive over them. Apart from that, not paying
particular attention to where I store my cards I haven't had any adverse
effects so far. In practice, I'd think whatever doesn't physically damage
the card won't harm the data on it.

Why are you having to register or otherwise subscribe a CentOS box?! That's

I recall a site to site copy functionality within WHM. Although I haven't

Short of that, it seems crazy to think that they would restrict SSH.

Let me know if you need more help, and I can try to research it more.

2020-11-22 Thread Snyder, Alexander J via PLUG-discuss
Hello World!

I just cleaned out the "Tech Dresser" in my home office, and I have 3
plastic shopping bags with assorted cables. Most are in great condition,
some are in good condition. Like 90% cables, many duplicates, and a few
other goodies I don't have use for anymore, but deserve a good home (8 port
gigabit switch, no power adapter).

Please shoot me a text if you're interested, 480.478.5865

They'll likely go to the trash by Friday, so please let me know.

It comes as a bundle. All or nothing.

East-Valley (Gilbert) ... McQueen/Guadalupe.

Re: raid5

2020-07-18 Thread Snyder, Alexander J via PLUG-discuss
You are correct, for a hardware RAID you need a hardware RAID controller.

I've only used LVM to join multiple disks, but I'm not sure if that's
classified as "Software RAID".

I have a Hardware RAID controller with 12 SAS drives. From there, I slice
the large "disk" up with LVM.

Alexander

The only outbound ports open without concern are 123(UDP), 53(UDP),
80(TCP), and 443(TCP). All other ports are blocked, outbound to the web, on
my system.

If I read this, this would go around my guards, as they are "piggybacking"
on 443 in and out, right?

Plex Media Server ...

2020-05-21 Thread Snyder, Alexander J via PLUG-discuss
If anyone out there is a fan of Plex Media Server, I could really use some
help on this brain teaser.

https://forums.plex.tv/t/no-soup-for-you-fresh-install/593610

Server Version#: 1.19.3.2831-181d9145d
OS: CentOS 8, 4.18.0-147.8.1.el8_1.x86_64

This is a plain jane fresh install. I’m not trying to claim or recover
anything. I have fully gutted my plex “Authorized Devices”, I have fully
deleted plex, and removed all files, I have signed out entirely from the
web account, I have signed out of every other portal I can. I have flushed
my cache, and even rebooted the server where Plex was installed.

I’m starting fresh.

I go to plex, and download copy the link to the public 64-bit RPM.

$ dnf -y install
https://downloads.plex.tv/plex-media-server-new/1.19.3.2831-181d9145d/redhat/plexmediaserver-1.19.3.2831-181d9145d.x86_64.rpm

everything installs just fine.

systemctl status plexmediaserver: RUNNING (no errors)

(in a private browser): 10.0.20.2:32400/web/

I get immediately forwarded to:

http://10.0.20.2:32400/web/index.html#!/setup/

Prompted to sign in … no issues

NO SOUP FOR YOU!

Like I said, I’m not trying to claim a server or anything – fresh install.

I don’t understand what’s going wrong.

P.S. – Been using Plex without issues for 3 years, just decided to do it
all over with a dedicated video card, and CentOS 8.
EDIT: Added Logs, of all steps outlined above.Plex Media Server.log

Re: Good $100 Wifi Router for Apartment and Advanced User?

2020-05-18 Thread Snyder, Alexander J via PLUG-discuss
I'll give it to you for $100 plus your assistance on any of these issues I
have, listed in order of importance:

   - NFS Export is not allowing the client to modify file/folder
details (*chown/chmod
fail 'Operation Not Permitted'*) on the Host.
  - I need the client to be able to do *"all the things"* the host can
... I've already done all kinds of troubleshooting, but I can't get past
this error, and it is driving me effing crazy!!!
   - Windows Active Directory
  - I have AD DS setup up with DNS, but I don't understand Group Policy
enough to understand OU's and where/how to make it so I can use AD
credentials to log into things I have joined to AD (eg: vCenter).
   - Windows Certificate Authority
   - Never done this before, I would like to set up an internal Root CA and
start getting my VMs and Appliances with certificates.
   - Join Linux to AD
  - I've done some light googling on this, but it still seems a bit out
of reach for me, so any help would be appreciated.

Let me know what you think!

Search for openssh or openssh-server or something like that. I forget the

I'm pretty sure it's comes by default on all major distributions.

Re: PfSense + ubiquity

2020-05-03 Thread Snyder, Alexander J via PLUG-discuss
I got it working.

I assigned the SFP+ port as my LAN and assigned it the 10.x.x.x/16 network.
Then I had to call COX and list the WAN Mac address with them. Upon doing
so I was able to reach external sites, and all downstream devices started
coming alive!

Thanks for all the suggestions and help!

Re: PfSense + ubiquity

2020-05-02 Thread Snyder, Alexander J via PLUG-discuss
Yes, I would appreciate any help! I finally got the FW working. It is setup
to pass SFP+ downstream to the switch. I am plugged into the switch but
things are still funky. I don't have internet access. I can log into the
local cloud key, but that's basically worthless (it seems) without
internet.

The FW is configured (for now) to pass all traffic on all ports WAN/LAN.
Want to eliminate the FW as a potential issue.

I'll check this thread tomorrow. Have a good night!

Thanks,
Alexander

pfSense + Ubiquity

2020-05-02 Thread Snyder, Alexander J via PLUG-discuss
Does anyone out there have experience with pfSence and Ubiquity switches?

I have zero with either but that didn't stop me from buying both how
hard could it be?! LOL.

I bought a Negate XG-1537-1U. I bought a Unifi Pro 24 PoE switch.

I can configure the FW immediately after firstboot/restore-default-configs,
but only if i set the LAN interface to be the cable that goes directly to
my laptop. That's great, but that does shit for the downstream switch.

I have a 10GB SFP+ Port that I want to configure as the downstream port to
ubiquity, but any configuration other than mentioned above fails and
I'm now on my 12th "Reset To Factory Defaults" ... any help on this would
be greatly appreciated!

Re: Hiring Senior VMWare

2020-01-09 Thread Snyder, Alexander J
AFAIK they have not yet posted it, as the current guy just submitted his
2wk notice yesterday.

As a Linux admin, the hiring manager asked us all if we knew anyone with
Senior VMWare experience. I didn't, directly, so I posted here.

Based on my daily interaction, i know we have ~50(?at least?) physical
hosts managed by two vCenter instances. We have ~2700 Linux VMs and a few
hundred Windows VMs. We have two DCs, but are in the process of a major
restructure moving a significant number of resources to the cloud and
RedHat (proper).

I hope that helps. The current team has two sufficiently skilled, but not
senior VMWare Engineers.

Thanks,
Alexander

CentOS 8

2019-10-21 Thread Snyder, Alexander J
Has anyone done any real work with CentOS 8 yet?

I've played around with it on a VM, but nothing substantial.

I'm preparing to move my home servers over to it on the 1st. Can anyone
share any pitfalls they've had with it? Anything to avoid, or anything I
need to know, would be very helpful.

Home Servers will be running SabNZB, Sonarr, Radarr, and Plex.

Thanks!

Re: Looking for a Cable Modem

2019-08-08 Thread Snyder, Alexander J
I have one, but I stopped using it because the internet would drop, like it
was rebooting, but it wasn't.

I've gone through several since then, some better, but now I'm plagued by
the same issue on different hardware.

Anyway, it's free, you'll probably need a power supply for it, as I don't
think I have it.

Cisco Docsis 3.0, cable modem.

Can get model specifics tonight, if you're interested.

Re: Bootable CD ...

2019-08-04 Thread Snyder, Alexander J
The internal drive is recognized by the BIOS, but fails to spin up.

The Laptop was built in 2009 by Puget Systems (https://www.pugetsystems.com/),
so yes, the hardware is old, but I highly doubt it's "Too Old" for Linux. I
found another USB SSD I bought the same time as the laptop, so I'm going to
try and format that and see if it works as a bootable device.

Trying to get CentOS 7 on it, but I'm flirting with the idea of trying
Manjaro on it.

Re: Bootable CD ...

2019-08-04 Thread Snyder, Alexander J
I wasn't able to go to Installfest, we had guests.

After they left, I went hunting in the garage and found an old DVD-R (USB).
I went to Best Buyand got a few blank DVDs. So, it won't read from a 2019
USB-SSD, but it'll boot from a ~2015 USB-DVD drive?

I can get into the CentOS 7 setup but it fails to verify the media, and
refuses to continue. When I skip verify, it still fails by saying the media
is not fit for install.

So now I'm really confused.

Thanks,
Alexander

Bootable CD ...

2019-08-03 Thread Snyder, Alexander J
Looking for help!

Does anyone have a bootable Linux CD?

I have an old laptop that hasn't been powered on in about 5 years.

It last ran Fedora 21, but for an unknown reason the FS is corrupt and only
boots to emergency mode.

I'm going to format and install CentOS 7 over it, but the old laptop
doesn't boot from USB, but will boot from CD.

I don't have a burner, or discs. So I'm asking for help!

Can someone burn CentOS7 minimal for me?

I live in NW Gilbert (Guadalupe/McQueen), so if you're in that area, that's
helpful, but I'll go wherever the help is offered.

Thanks,
Alexander

Re: WordPress file ownership and Permissions

2019-06-24 Thread Snyder, Alexander J
You can check the PS output:

ps -ef | grep -v grep | grep -Ei 'wordpress|apache|php'

It's likely running as the apache user or the www user.

Thanks,

 Here is my problem.

I can either FTP or WordPress can edit / remove file. I cannot do

To allow WordPress to modify files I must: (I cannot SFTP)

- chown -R {my-user-name}:www-data www/
- chmod -R 755 www/

To allow me to SFTP I must change the file ownership: (WordPress
 cannot modify files)

- chown -R {my-user-name}:www-data www/

I would like to be able to FTP and allow WordPress to modify files.

 Any help much appreciated.

Re: Plug

2019-01-31 Thread Snyder, Alexander J
I owe everyone an apology, utmost Mike. My actions were thoughtless and
above all, rude. My attempt was to privately vent frustration to a peer,
which went wrong because the frustrations were based on ignorance.

Mike, I'm sorry. I am most certainly not the smartest (clearly) and I
forgot that no matter the skill level with anything I.T., we all start
somewhere. I also forgot an important maxim ... "be kind, everyone is
fighting a battle you know nothing about".

It was a dick move. My bad.

I hope you see the sincerity of my apology, as my hindsight reminds me how
hurtful comments like mine can be.

I really am sorry, and I hope we can both move forward from this, together.
Please feel free to reach out to me anytime.

Thanks,
Alexander.

I don't have experience with Mint, but I do with Ubuntu, years ago.

If mint uses DPKG, I think you can use the command:

dpkg -i "URLtoYourDEBfile.deb"

wget will get the file, but won't install it.

Building an RPM ...

2018-12-17 Thread Snyder, Alexander J
Hello!

I'm trying to build an RPM package, from source.

I'm following the suggestions of several tutorials online, but I keep
getting errors when checking the build.

I'm still generally confused about the install section. If I'm building it
from source, how should I know what files will be installed, and in what
directories?

Is the "files" section required or just a courtesy so "rpm -ql" would work?

Im trying to build GNU Nettle 3.4.1 into an RPM, as the CentOS repo only
has v2.7.1 built.

I really appreciate the help!

Thanks,
Alexander.

We're currently using syslog-ng and are moving away from it as the project
hasn't been updated in years (obscurity is not security). We're collecting
with rsyslog and sending to Splunk for search and visualization.

Right now we're only testing with rsyslog and only have it configured on a
single host. We're building out a new DC and are going to setup rsyslog as
primary.

Im going to ask our ITSEC about the data points we're collecting and I'll
let the group know what I find.

Re: CentOS 6/7

How does the predictable naming conventions work in VMs? I see they always
differ slightly.

Are we not using a pool of expected syntax like 1/2/3 ??? Or is it built on
things like mb.vendor, # nics, and other arbitrary things like that?

I've been reconfiguring servers that were vMotioned from one DC to another
... the nic names are ALWAYS *slightly* different.

Im not sure why the way you access single user mode had to change.

Thanks,
Alexander.

CentOS 6/7

2018-12-04 Thread Snyder, Alexander J
Why did things have to change so dramatically between CentOS 6 and 7?

Does anyone know why networking devices aren't eth0/1/2/3 but are now
ens0f0/enp0d0.

Also getting into single user mode now is (IMHO) unnecessarily complicated
(typing 'single' versus now 'init=/sysroot/bin/bash').

Im not sure what to even Google to get the explanation im seeking, so I
thought I'd ask the brain trust!

Assuming you paid the same for the windows box as you did for the Linux one
... dual boot it, or load Ubuntu into a VM.

Although since you're only after an app that has a windows binary as well,
then I'd just stick with the Windows box ... unless you gain something in
Linux for this app?

Late to the party, but I've been using Google Apps since it was free. I pay
now, but $10/m (per user) is well worth it. I host the services through my
own GoDaddy domain.

Security and peace of mind knowing that Google owns my digital life. Like
getting a constant hug from a stranger all.the.time.

It is what it is. I vote for G-Suite (Or whatever the marketing buzzword is

Re: How to open a text file with kwrite from a menu?

2017-12-30 Thread Snyder, Alexander J
Hi Joe!

The reason you're getting that prompt is because that syntax is saying to
open an ".odt" file and you have not yet told Firefox how to handle the
".odt" extension. You can do that in your browser settings. If you were to
change the syntax to have ".txt" the browser would just display it online,
with no prompt.

I'm not familiar with the "=file:" part, and suspect that might be specific
to FF. Try this and let me know if it works for you?

Thanks,
Alex.

Two questions:
(1) What actions and what syntax could I use to open a plain text
document with 'kwrite' (the text editor that I use most often)?

(2) How can I get this to work with the Chrome browser, also?
(It only works with Firefox now.)

I was 19 and already quite tech literate. I knew nothing catastrophic was

It all passed with a whimper in Olympia Washington, and all had a good
night.

Re: Cox Gigablast

2017-11-17 Thread Snyder, Alexander J
Kind of irritated by this ...

Cox lays fiber in my subdivision, has the service trucks wrapped in
"Gigablast" vinyl adverts ...

Service folk gladly sharing that "it's for gigablast" ...

I did my giddy dance, nerdgasm, the whole 9 yards ... #ShutUpAndTakeMyMoney

I called them each week and spoke to customer service folks that seemed to
be less informed than the guy last week ...

Bro ... that was 6 months ago. >:-(

The only major development was Cox billing me for going over 1TB a
bandwidth a month.

Friends in Auhtukee and Glendale have it, and are quite happy with it. Why
can't I have this happiness?

Sincerely,
AloneAndHopless ...

;-)

Thanks,
Alex.

Re: Salary Average ...

2017-11-08 Thread Snyder, Alexander J
I should have included that this is an internal transfer, supported by my
current management team as the "next step" in my professional growth plan.

Are salary negotiations different for internal candidates?

Thanks,
Alex.
