Printer works perfectly as a plain PostScript device; or openprinting.org has a PPD for the similar 3070 which works fine: http://www.openprinting.org/printer/Brother/Brother-HL-3070CW There is a tiny wrapper program on the Brother site; it appears to only add support for built-in fonts and set a few other PostScript options... the installed bits (you can do this in a Docker container) are almost entirely text and an easily viewed binary that seems just to add the various strings. Very happy with my Brother color duplex laser (well, really, LED beam) printer. Works perfectly with cups ppd. Places like 123inkjets.com have low-cost remanufactured or compatible cartridges that work perfectly as well. The only noticeable overall performance difference is that whereas HP prints duplex pages faster (first-side-first-page, first-side-second-page, second-side-first-page, second-side-second-page), the Brother only handles one sheet at a time. SSDs versus spinning-rust drives
Contemplating ordering an SSD as at least the boot and main drive for my PC. Is that even a good idea? Are /var, logfiles, and all the other stuff that constantly gets written to disk, still a Really Bad Idea for solid-state memory with its limited write cycle times? Or is that no longer an issue?
