I'm just thinking a PHP developer should be able to configure a host on DigitalOcean and a handful of other things. Nothing advanced. Given what might be coming Linux might be a decent desktop skill to have so one can recycle "old" hardware - just add an SSD for a really good time!! There are two sides of this. 1) code written to a "platform" AKA PHP/JS specialist. 2) Code written with a deep platform integration. This is where you should know Nginx, Apache, IIS, and related OS information. Both have a place in general software development.
