O/T : Windows WIFI not connecting

2023-08-28 Thread Keith Smith via PLUG-discuss

Hi,

Need some help. My wife's computer again. All was well until she tried
to surf the Internet this morning. This computer has been configured on
my network for over 3 years.

It is a Win 10 Pro box.

- I tried the windows troubleshooter and it said it was resetting the
driver.
- Checked my router and the computer shows up in the access control
list.
- Changed the WIFI password and it says it authenticates and then says
there is no connection.

- I have a Windows laptop that is configured to use WIFI and it works.
- I cannot ping my wife's computer from my Linux desktop.
- I've cycled everything multiple time.

In searching the Internet it basically tells me to do what I have
already done.

Any words of wisdom are much appreciated.

Thanks!!
Keith

Dumb question, but does it work when you connect via ethernet cable or is
it only wifi?

Re: O/T : Windows WIFI not connecting

2023-08-28 Thread Keith Smith via PLUG-discuss

Thanks for your reply!!

I have not tried Ethernet yet. That would require me digging through my
closet to find a long cable that might reach the other room or I might
have to relocate the computer into my cluttered home office... Was
hoping for some simple solution and if not I will connect via Ethernet.

I'm reading I might have a corrupt driver that will require
Ethernet. or maybe a thumb drive. At that point I will want to go
with Ethernet, which I think might make the fix easier.

Re: O/T : Windows WIFI not connecting

2023-08-28 Thread Andrew McRobb via PLUG-discuss
Ok, let me know. That will at least give some context if it IS a driver
issue or something else is wrong with Windows that it cant connect to the
internet. I know this is a Linux group so hopefully someone here with a
Windows background can chime in and give some better advice. Could also go
into Windows Device Manager and see if the board for wifi/ethernet shows up
properly.

Your Wife's computer, turn off wifi, turn back on using management properties.
Could also be wifi card needs replaced.

Moved box into my office and will fire up on Ethernet in a bit. Have a

Not sure if I read this right but if it's a laptop many of them have a
switch that turns off Wi-Fi. I've had customers mistakenly put that switch
and no matter what they do in software could make it turn on. A work around
for that issue if it's a problem with it Wi-Fi hardware is to get a USB
dongle and connect using that.

Re: O/T : Windows WIFI not connecting

2023-08-31 Thread Keith Smith via PLUG-discuss

Thank you to all who replied and all your suggestions.

It is somewhat unclear what happened because I used no diagnostics to
fix the issue.

As you might recall the computer in question is my wife's Dell that is 3
or 4 years old. Since it was new it has been slow. I assumed it was
the WiFi. Then it became extremely slow. After determining (PLUG help)
it was a RAM issue (it only had 4Gb of RAM) I upgraded the computer to
32Gb of RAM. I upgraded to 32Gb because at some point in the future I
will inherit the box. The computer was peppy for about a month and then
the computer would not "connect" to the Internet. It showed in my
router's access control so it seems the router was seeing it.

At the same time the power buttons were showing that windows wanted to
update the O/S.

Since I was unable access the Internet I moved the box into my office
and connected it to the router via Ethernet. I finally had access to
the Internet and started what I thought was an update and turned out to
be an upgrade from Windows 10 to Windows 11. It took about an hour and a
quarter.

I turned the computer on and off several times and it displayed it
wanted to conduct an update. About 45 minutes later is had completed
the update process.

After some fumbling around I was able to get WIFI to work and returned
the computer to my wife's office. She did what she always does all day
yesterday without an issue.

Windows 11 does not seem to be all that different from Windows 10.

I assume what might have happened was due to the limited amount of RAM
the updates were not applied or may not have been applied correctly.

In the end I got a free copy of Windows 11 and now my wife's computer is
running well.

Any thought are much appreciated.

Keith

see if you can run this command

Can you do a ipconfig /all and see if a wireless interface is listed
there?
what IP address is showing for that?

Device manager on that will show any conflicts with the drivers if at
all.
EventViewer may show something

Not sure if I read this right but if it's a laptop many of them have a
switch that turns off Wi-Fi. I've had customers mistakenly put that
switch and no matter what they do in software could make it turn on. A
work around for that issue if it's a problem with it Wi-Fi hardware is
to get a USB dongle and connect using that.

Thanks!! I've disabled the WIFI and enabled it several times. I
hope I
do not have to replace the WIFI card. However I am along for the
ride...

Moved box into my office and will fire up on Ethernet in a bit.
Have a
couple things to take care of first.

Thanks for your input!!

Thanks for your reply!!

I have not tried Ethernet yet. That would require me digging
through my
closet to find a long cable that might reach the other room or I
might
have to relocate the computer into my cluttered home office...

Was

hoping for some simple solution and if not I will connect via
Ethernet.

I'm reading I might have a corrupt driver that will require
Ethernet. or maybe a thumb drive. At that point I will want

to

go
with Ethernet, which I think might make the fix easier.

Dumb question, but does it work when you connect via ethernet

cable or

is it only wifi?

Hi,

Need some help. My wife's computer again. All was well until

she

tried
to surf the Internet this morning. This computer has been
configured on
my network for over 3 years.

It is a Win 10 Pro box.

- I tried the windows troubleshooter and it said it was

resetting

the
driver.
- Checked my router and the computer shows up in the access

control

list.
- Changed the WIFI password and it says it authenticates and

then

says
there is no connection.
- I have a Windows laptop that is configured to use WIFI and it
works.
- I cannot ping my wife's computer from my Linux desktop.
- I've cycled everything multiple time.

In searching the Internet it basically tells me to do what I

have

already done.

Any words of wisdom are much appreciated.

Thanks!!
Keith
