The following is my opinion: YMMV.

I joyfully used Gimp in the 20th century and a lot of the 00's, but somewhere
between 2005 and 2015 Gimp jumped the shark and became undiscoverable. Gimp is
almost excessively featureful, and the basic features are scattered within the
specialized features such that the basic features are very hard to find. Gimp
is now
so featureful, with so little guidance on how to access those features, that
learning Gimp is on a par with learning a new computer language.

Another Gimp problem is that its toolbox of tiny icons is actively hostile to
those
of us with lesser visual accuities.

Also, for new construction as opposed to touch-up, a vector graphics program is
usually much easier than a pixel graphics program, so why not use Inkscape for
new
construction? Those not looking for photographic detail can achieve quite a bit
with
Inkscape. See https://logosbynick.com/professional-designs-made-with-inkscape/
and
https://inkscape.org/~Tomcarlos/%E2%98%85morning-mist and
https://inkscape.org/~Tomcarlos/%E2%98%85napa-vineyard and
https://inkscape.org/gallery/ for examples of great Inkscape art.

I can see why a Graphic Artist would need Gimp in his/her toolset. I can easily
imagine such a person taking the days and days of research and experimentation
needed to master the Gimp interface.

The following URL shows some Gimp stuff I did back when Gimp and I still had a
good
relationship:

Mike,
It looks like what you are trying to do is merge three photos with different
exposures into a single photo with greater dynamic range. That's usually
described as High Dynamic Range, or HDR, exposure.
There are tutorials online for how to do that; a search for ["High Dynamic
Range" GIMP] should bring good results.

well I was directed to a good tutorial and he had two plugins he
wanted me to install that was one and the other is in the package
gimp-plugin-registry. but I have since learned 'layer via copy' has
been deprecated and that gimp-plugin-registry wants to downgrade from
2.10.22 to 2.10.18 so I wonder if I should just go with 2.10.18 since
that is the version in my distribution.

I think you may be out of luck depending on how old your distro is.
The plugin depends on a deprecated package called pygtk, though you can
still download the python script at
http://gimpchat.com/viewtopic.php?f=8=15075=10 . pygtk and
specifically the "gimpfu" python module is not available in current
Gentoo releases. If your Gimp is 2.8.n and the rest of your system is
similarly behind, it may be possible. This'd be done by copying the .py
file to ~/.gimp-2.8/plug-ins/ and making sure it's chmodded +x.
However, there is apparently a way to do what this thing did with Gimp
itself and no plugins, though it requires more fiddling. *shrug*.

(Artists and programmers seem to have fundamentally different ways of
working/thinking in many cases. I wonder if something like that is
behind why so many people are always complaining about the Gimp UI.)

defaulting to dark. I changed that to light, second from the bottom, and it
seems like what I remember of old times. Of course click OK to exit, saving

Re: gimp and nef

2017-11-12 Thread Stephen Partington
Because gimp is not a RAW processor. That is why darktable and lightroom
are so important. You use them as your raw processor then export to gimp.

This article is for Adobe products but it explains the basics well

Re: Gimp

2016-06-06 Thread Joseph Sinclair
Mostly what Brian says. 2.9.2 is out and 2.9.4 should be out soon. 2.9.4 has
almost all of the 2.10 features, although some are experimental, and there are
known major bugs. Remember to save often (and to rotate multiple save files)
when using a development version.

Specifically:
1) It will be released when it's done. There's no set schedule, it just
depends on how many people work on it and how much work it turns out to be.
The 2.10 release turned out vastly more work than originally expected, as it is
essentially an 80% rewrite using a completely new graphics engine based on
content graphs and graph manipulation. On the upside that kind of engine lends
itself well to acceleration via OpenCL, which is work that started (in a
separate project) early this year. 2.10 has taken years longer than originally
planned, but it's work that had to be done to bring GIMP out of it's 1990's-era
limitations.
2) Looking at the git commit history and roadmaps, the pacing lately is fairly
stable and consistent, and suggests a stable 2.10 release late this year, or
possibly early next year. It depends a lot on the 2-3 key contributors,
however, so any date is more guess than science.

Disclaimer:
I don't have any inside information here, I just dug through the roadmap
history, git logs, and the past 20 or so commits to see what's being worked on
and roughly how quickly work gets done.

Gimp usually makes a major release once every ice age that being said, I
think it will be fairly soon. In the mean time find a PPA for the development
version. It's currently very stable, and since it's close to the next release
is very feature complete to what you can expect in the final product.

Pandora just helps you manually align images as if you were aligning

together, take out the lens distortion, and warp them so that you end up
with a seamless image as if you had a lens that would take pictures all at

Out of those 4, I think the 3rd one (The "over exposed" one) is the best
shot.

Personally I would have gone with something more like this one that that
I got straight out of LuminanceHDR:

I prefer DSC01233 the most, The luminance has too much wash out for my
preference, however this may be that your base images are all 3 somewhat
dark.

an idea when shooting for HDR use the "bracketing setting on the camera if
available (this is pretty common among Canon even the Rebel line) and set
it for +/- 5-7 EV from your base image.

What it will then do is shoot "normal" then -5 ev then +5 ev giving you a
near perfect bracket set to build an HDR from. What camera are you shooting
with?

2016-01-06 Thread Brian Cluff
Pandora just helps you manually align images as if you were aligning
photograph on your dining roomtable. Hugin will automatically put them
together, take out the lens distortion, and warp them so that you end up
with a seamless image as if you had a lens that would take pictures all
at all angles at once. It's really worth the effort to get your system
unbroken enough to install hugin. You'll need to get it unbroken anyway
because I'm sure that hugin isn't the only thing that won't load correctly.

Try doing:
apt-get update
apt-get -f install
apt-get dist-upgrade
apt-get install hugin

See if that gets it on your system.

Re: gimp plugin pandora

2016-01-06 Thread Brian Cluff
What do you have against a dist-upgrade? The only difference between an
upgrade and a dist upgrade is that and upgrade will ONLY install
software that doesn't require it to add or remove and dependencies. A
dist upgrade does the same thing as an upgrade but will also install and
remove software as needed to install your new software. It does NOT try
to upgrade your whole distribution as the command name implies.
If you want all your software to be up to date within the version of the
OS you are running, you should be doing a dist-upgrade most of the time.

Re: gimp

2014-10-14 Thread Brian Cluff
Unless you are having troubles with the ubuntu supplied version, I would
just stick with it. There aren't any new features in the newer version,
just minor bug fixes that mostly likely won't effect you.

If you really want the latest greatest with new features and everything
you need to load this PPA:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:otto-kesselgulasch/gimp-edge
sudo apt-get update sudo apt-get upgrade

That will give you what will eventually be 2.10 or 3.0 whatever they end
up deciding to call it.
It's been fairly stable for me, but since it's still under development
that could change at any time. I have had versions that refused to open
and other bugs, but those have been very short lived. You have to take
whatever they dish out at this point.

Or else, how do I add the repository to apt for it?

Re: gimp

2014-10-14 Thread Brian Cluff
I forgot one little thing, you currently have to also install the
package libgegl-dev in order for the development version of gimp to
start. Without that package gimp will complain about a core piece of
GEGL being missing and refuse to art. I think they currently have an
error in their packaging because it didn't used to require that package
and it shouldn't require it in order to start the base software.

Re: gimp edge detect

2013-10-29 Thread Brian Cluff
What you are looking for is called intelligent scissors, and it's got an
icon of scissors towards the top of the toolbox. If you are using the
2.9 development version the intelligent scissors seem to be missing from
that version. Hopefully that's just a temporary situation.

That being said, what you really want to do is brighten part of your
picture without brightening the parts that are already bright... you
also want to make sure that you don't brighten the darkest parts of your
image.

There are a lot of ways to do that. The most straight forward is to use
Colors - Curves and adjust the curve so that just the dark parts get
lightened.

My favorite way is to duplicate the image and then create a mask that
also has the image in it, and set the layer to Screen. That way the
image itself masks off the brigh parts of the image. If you don't get
enough brightness with the first layer, just duplicate your new layer.
If you get a little too much, just adjust the opacity of the new layer
till you have the desired result.
