That hardware, if running, can be repurposed. SSDs are getting more
affordable. I've replaced the spinner in all of my computers and
installed Linux, with the exception of two computers. Someone who is on
a budget might like to purchase your old computers.

Some say the lock down is/will kill the economy for the next decade. If
this is true recycling old computers will be more necessary than ever.
Given the new hardware is so powerful I see people trying to keep their
computers going for 10 years.

I wonder if ddrescue with a log file could raise those odds. I've used
it on hard disks of dubious quality, but have never tried it on a

I'd typically find floppies that didn't work after a few years for whatever
reason back when they were the shiznit still, I can't imagine they hold up
much over time, and imagine charging for someone scanning hundreds of them
and not recovering anything more often than not. I have binders full of
cd's and dvd's as well I don't much expect to work much better if I ever
had to dig them out for anything important.

Your best option for profitability doing that is probably for tips to the

I think I have a 3.5" floppy drive in the junk drawer. I don't know if
it works; the last time I used it was over a decade ago. Many
motherboards still have a floppy drive connector, but I don't know
whether modern power supplies include the connector for a 3.5" drive.
5.25" drives were obsolete in the 1990s, so that may be more difficult.
Also note that there are USB 3.5" floppy drives, though these only work
with disks that had standard formatting (80 tracks, 2 heads, 18
sectors/track). Tom's RootBoot used 82 tracks and 21 sectors/track, but
Tom's is in the dustbin of history now that everything can boot from
USB.

This depends greatly on the quality of the media. Some floppies were
much more robust than others.
