Re: Verizon

2015-11-29 Thread Keith Smith

Verizon recently uncoupled the phone from your plan. I think you can
still do the contract thing... however I do not know that for sure. My
bill went down $40/mo for two phones. I can still buy a phone and they
will finance it, however you can now bring your own phone... I'm sure
there are some restrictions and compatibility issues. This was good
news for me because I replace my phone at about 4 years not two. I save
a bunch this way. Interestingly I am now experiencing dropped calls.
Not sure if that means anything or if that is just how it goes
sometimes.

Verizon network. There are other providers on the Verizon prepaid

Re: Verizon

2015-11-29 Thread Michael Butash

I use straight talk, which uses ATT or
TMO networks (you choose) for 45/mo unlimited phone/data, throttle
after 3gb.  I just got a tablet plan too for 20/mo 3gb data for my
nexus 9.  I have no issues with coverage, other than oddly at my
house I never get LTE.  Good thing I have wifi and cable internet
  here.

I disconnected vzw for the last time after a $900 bill one month
over a technicality (which I ended up having to pay), AND paid to
get out of a contract just to take away their revenue stream and
make up my loss.  Before, I switched to sprint for bit to save
from vzw ~09ish, and went back because sprint coverage was
terrible until the $900 incident, thus prior comments.  Sprint at
least let me out of my contract as admittedly they could see no
coverage where I worked or lived with records of the drops.

  I also don't like locked vzw/sprint cdma phones I can't bootload
unlock/root/rom (which is inherent to their cell security).

Re: Verizon

2015-11-29 Thread Kevin Fries
I went with Project Fi, it uses both Sprint and T-Mobile and selects the
one that is stronger, but most importantly, it can go 100% all WiFi for
both data and voice. $20/mo + $10/GB of data. You pay for what you use...
Period. No allotments. So, on my plan, I told them I planned on using
3GB. So they bill me $53 something every month, minus a credit for
whatever I did not use the previous month. Simple. Quit any time, no
contract.

The phones are limited, I have a Nexus 6 I picked up off of Amazon. But
the limitation on the phones is due to the Beta nature of the service...
They are trying to limit the variables while they improve the service.
They have already expanded the phone list to about 3-4 phones, expect it to
go up from there.

All in all, mostly pleased, you may want to look into it.

Re: Verizon

2015-11-29 Thread Michael Butash
Anything to do with Sprint scares me - they were absolutely horrid to
use. That is odd, using sprint AND tmo sprint since it is cdma and tmo
is gsm. Unless just staying on LTE or something that doesn't suck like
the PCS spectrum... or just a backup plan to switch to gsm when (not
if) sprint is unavailable.

I'll need to look into Fi some, either way hybrid cell/wifi roaming is
something of an emerging market opportunity being moved toward. I was
looking at some cisco products that do that for fast roaming (ie. voice
quality) between cell to wifi handoff, mostly for this purpose. I was
wondering why one of the local providers was putting in the appliances
to deal with the auth end of that, but when you're talking fast roaming
between providers, cell, and wifi, it gets... interesting, thus
solutions are born for apparently things like the Project Fi service.
