Re: in need of a computer
I guess my router was bad because I returned the modem for a modem/router and everything was fine after that. In any case, if anyone is interested in that new computer I got here are the specs: http://pastebin.com/DvYAhd0H also... I was told the video card is a Sapphire Radeon HD 4850 1GB GDDR3 PCI-E, HDMI,DVI-I,VGA. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814102837 I did a little research and discovered AMD is no longer supporting this card (well, says one post I read). Does anyone know how I would go about getting the best capabilities possible for this card? Re: in need of a computer
Ok can you communicate to the router when connected and set up internally? If so that is not likely an issue. If you can connect directly to the modem and you are not getting connectivity, then there is an issue. Be aware that you need to power off your modem for 30-60 sec and restart it connected to nothing, then connect whatever device you want to use. this is a normal cablemodem config design. however if the same ethernet cable connected to your router sees the routed and can ping it then you know your ethernet and cable are good. if you connect to the cablemodem and get no connection then that is where your issue lies. and that would be a call to your service provider. My ip address is dynamic via cox. (I can't afford a static one!) (I'm poor remember?) If I connect the modem directly to the modem I get connectivity and all lights are a solid green. If I connect the modem to a router and then to the computer I get connectivity and all lights are solid green except the PC activity light is a flashing orange. If I connect the TV server to the router or to the modem with a cable I made for it I get no connectivity and the flashing orange PC activity light. I did try using a known-good cable that I did not make (it was not custom built for the purpose) but still no connectivity (I even drilled a hole from the living room to the computer room so I didn't have to staple things to the wall and so the run would be much smaller) . My router is the DSL modem/router I was using in AZ.. I even tried using the ancient Linksys wrt54g router. I did change the ports around and always it is the Pi that will not work. This sounds like something is off in the networking overall. A few questions. Have you tried a statically assigned IP? Have you the ability to test the cable/router with an alternate nic or device? Can you test the cable? At this point you need to see about eliminating failure so start by trying to rules out issues as you can to make sure all your parts are good. Re: in need of a computer
hey, I just wired a computer to a router and no internet. I thought that maybe it was the rj-45 and when I put a new end on and plugged it in the info window appeared saying, 'You are now connected.' After internet still didn't work I unplugged it again and the info window said, 'You are now disconnected from the internet'. The router lights up when I plug it in and the lights on the NIC flash (so the two devices are communicating). Is there a hardware firewall I need to be aware of or something like that? This is when I was running a Live Linux distro. When I was logged in to windows7 it said something about the DNS after I clicked the troubleshooting. When I was on the Linux side 'connection information' said that the DNS was the router (192.168.0.1) and 205.171.3.25 . When I attempted to go to the 205 ip it appears to be no longer a valid address; however, the other device connected to the router is working just fine. Any ideas as to what is wrong?
