OT: looking at laptops
Has anyone out there been looking at laptops lately? I need to pick one up soon. My current system is nearing the end of its life. So I have been looking around for systems that have these general specs. - 17"+ screen - separate video card/memory 128+ - full keyboard with separate number pad - wireless (a/b/g/n) - DVD +/- RW / CD-RW (blue ray would be nice but isn't essential) - memory card reader (5- or 7-in-1) - IEEE 1394 port and at least 4 USB - the bigger the HD, the better - I'd be happy with either an Intel or AMD dual core 64 bit - 2+ G of memory - weight and battery life aren't real big deals, but it would be nice if it could be under 8 lbs and can keep running on the battery for 2 hrs or more. I use my laptop as my main system to do a lot of graphics and website design, as well as database management. I also do the standard word processing, presentations, etc. I run VMWare to have Windows ready in the background. So I generally have two OSs running, lots of windows open, database, graphics, and web apps all running at the same time. Obviously I would want a system that runs Linux without any hitches. If anyone has seen anything like that around and can send a note or comments on your experiences my way (like troubles with ATI vs. NVIDIA video cards, issues with wireless, etc.), it would be appreciated. So far, I have seen systems like Acer Aspire AS7720 at Best Buy http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=8621707&type=product&id=1193234282708 Something in the HP Pavilion dv9500t series http://www.shopping.hp.com/series/category/notebooks/dv9500t_series/3/computer_store?jumpid=in_r329_personalization/browse1/home_SDP Toshiba X205-SLi http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=8553898&type=product&id=1190677997542&DCMP=KNC-TLC&ref=30&loc=KW-1153 I'm open to others if you know of them or know where I can find sales or specials. Samsung 712N and xorg.conf
I am trying to get my Dad's computer working with his Samsung SyncMaster 712N, and am having some trouble. I am 2000 miles away which doesn't help with the debug either. He says that he can't get to the bottom of his screen at all to get to the menus, etc. Which tells me that he may be in a lower resolution than he desires. Can anyone help here? He is using CentOS 5 KDE Samsung SyncMaster 712N his xorg.conf looks like this: ### comment all HorizSinc and VertSinc values to use ddc: HorizSinc 31.5 - 48.5 VertRefresh 40.0 -70.0 Option "dpms" EndSection Section "Device" Identifier "Videocard0" Driver "nv" EndSection Section "Screen" Identifier "Screen0" Device "Videocard0" Monitor "Monitor0" Default Depth 24 Subsection "Display" Viewport 0 0 Depth 24 Modes "1024x768" "800x600" "720x400" "648x480" EndSubSection EndSection -- Happy Trails! In January I start with the networking class, which covers lots of services such as web, mail, ssh, ftp, time and samba. Are these free classes? No. They're regular community college classes. They're part of an associates curriculum in Linux. No requirement to be working on a degree, but it's possible to get one. For those in other parts of town I know there have been regular GNU/Linux classes at SMCC, GCC, SCC and Gilbert-Chandler. PLUG offers lots of no cost presentations. We have monthly general meetings on the west side of town and the east side of town. We also have a monthly devel meeting. We are, however, taking the rest of the year off on presentations. This Thursday is our annual end of year party at the east side meeting. Please show up and bring family and friends. It's a no obligation pot luck. We've always had plenty of food ( more, especially non-sugar and non-snack stuff ) is good :). There will be no west side meeting this month as the school will be closed. Next month we'll be back with the regularly scheduled presentations. Contact me or any other member of the steering committee if you've got something you'd like to present. Regular presentations can be anywhere from 3 minutes to 45 minutes. Extended presentations up to 90 minutes are also welcome. ciao, der.hans -- # https://www.LuftHans.com/http://www.CiscoLearning.org/ # Stell dir vor, es ist Krieg und keiner geht hin...--- PLUG-discuss mailing list - PLUG-discuss@lists.plug.phoenix.az.us To subscribe, unsubscribe, or to change your mail settings: http://lists.PLUG.phoenix.az.us/mailman/listinfo/plug-discuss

Took the plunge but broke pieces of the raft...
Hi everyone, I decided that the only way for me to truly get into Linux was the same way I used Windows when 3.11 had come out: make it my only option. Well I have a Dell1520 (My replacement system got in from being stolen yeah!!!) with specs: Dell Inspiron 1520 2.2Ghz Core 2 Duo 2GB of Ram 160GB HDD Sigmatel Audio nVidia 8600GS (256MB) DVD -/+ RW Running a fresh install of Gusty 7.10 I have two issues: = A) No Sound I have tried the following: 1. Boot from live CD; install 2. Boot from hard drive 3. Enable restricted nVidia drivers - THIS DID NOT WORK!!! The latest 8000 Series Cards are not supported 3b. This however has not affected my display. 4. Enable restricted Broadcomm drivers for LAN. 5. Got Add/Remove to load NDiswrapper for wireless support (yeah I can troubleshoot from a couch) 6. Tried to Install Ubuntu updates but it said there were none 7. Attempted Audio fixes (I've included my steps, and alternatives from others - choose only one) a. Fix suggested by "alexander.forster" (preferred) o sudo apt-get install linux-backports-modules-generic (you'll need to enter password) o Reboot so all changes take effect; you should now have sound "This did not work I got the Broken packages statement in Terminal" b. Fix2 o sudo apt-get install libc6-dev o sudo apt-get install patch o wget ftp://ftp.alsa-project.org/pub/driver/alsa-driver-1.0.15.tar.bz2 o tar xvpjf alsa-driver-1.0.15.tar.bz2 o cd alsa-driver-1.0.15 o ./configure --with-cards=hda-intel,emu10k1 o make o sudo make install o Reboot so all changes take effect; you should now have sound "This one seemed to work but after reboot no sound." c. Fix3 * Alternative fix suggested by "lefthand" o sudo apt-get install module-assistant (you'll need to enter password) "This did not work I got the Broken packages statement in Terminal" *** The four commands below I never got to because of the error in the broken pakages *** o sudo m-a update o sudo m-a prepare o sudo m-a a-i alsa o Reboot so all changes take effect; you should now have sound B) Synaptic Package Manager Ok I tried to install Wine and Wesnoth Games but Add/Remove with "All Available Applications" would not load it because Synaptic Package manager wants to control them, and won't let me install them. Now I have not tried the last item Der.Hans mentioned yet but I will later today when I get off work. aptitude update && aptitude dist-upgrade Well at least wireless is working now, and any other ideas I would loe to bounce back and forth.
