That's what I was thinking, Micah; also, I was on E-Bay yesterday and I
saw even deeper discounts. The downside: you have to trust the seller
that they're telling you the honest truth about the condition of the
book! Or that they're honest, period...

on a related topic, the *Connexions* project: http://cnx.org/

RE: Easy Wine+IE6 setup (was Re: FW: On topic message about Off topic messages Various Solutions) URI Exploits

2008-10-02 Thread Lisa Kachold

The only practical uses for IE6 that I have found are testing browser CSS or
Javascript, Extended Validation Certificates, and of course, email filtering
maintenance in Sharepoint and Outlook.

I haven't found anything that even touches 1/2 of what FireBug, Web
Development, NoScript, Flickr or the other great plugins available for FireFox
3.0 provides for IE!

Opera is a nice browser and will work, unlike FireFox 3, with Silverlight and
some of the web site live conferencing sites that are still broken (ah, I mean
"URI secure"). Opera is a fine phone browser BTW, if you run your own
applications on a PDA.

Firefox 3.0 now protects systems from URI handling exploits (which allow a
computer to be completely taken over via browser in Firefox 2.0.0.5 and/or
Explorer (especially when installed together in a Microsoft box via "chrome"
see http://www.metasploit.com).

These exploits were especially insidious since they often began through a
simple trip to a website, and are nearly impossible to track back to the source
when XSS proxy exploits are included (which show only the packet traffic to the
Apache system with the XSS holes - like Google or another famous public site
everyone frequents. These dangerous exploits are still in place [even to the
point of allowing for control of your internal DSL routers - seeing all of your
protected cache, passwords and browser history]) so everyone should immediately
upgrade their older Linux Firefox to 3.0! Generally, all you would have seen
would have been a File Not Found after a pause, as the nice encrypted tunnel
over port 80/443 sets up to announce you everytime you come online to the
attacker irregardless of your DHCP address.

Sometimes, it's just easier to buy a nice DHCP key, move off your files and
rebuild under a nice Fedora 9 or Ubuntu - and get all the newest features as
well?

That is actually *very* common. Once you start looking for KDE icons on
websites, you will find them seemingly everywhere.

The KDE icons are LGPL, as you say. That means that anybody can use
them on their own site. Technically speaking, they have to have a copy
of the LGPL available... but what "available" means varies depending on
who you talk to.

I brought this to the attention of some people who may be able to get it
fixed. No idea when that'll happen though.

OT: Phoenix Sci-Fi Event in January

2008-10-02 Thread Joseph Sinclair
Just letting people know that Phoenix has it's own Sci-Fi convention (Phoenix
Comicon) coming in January.
A friend is part of the event staff and asked me to let people know it's
coming, and they have a great slate of star-guests coming to speak and meet
with fans. They're still adding guests, so check back every couple weeks for
the latest. (and yes, I know the website has layout issues in Firefox on
Linux, I'll let them know and offer to help fix it, if you have the web
developer toolbar extension, just disable the embedded styles, the problem is a
3 line snip of style info that's not correct)

The website is www.phoenixcomicon.com

If they are going to show the trailer for TR2N, I want in.

dd if=hda1 of=whatever ???????

2008-10-02 Thread mike havens
I hate windows! I hate it when I get a virus! Igot a brand new one
last night I was happily tip-tapping away last night but when I got up
in the morning everything was moving very s-l-o-w-l-y! After
running clam nothing was discovered so I just reinstalled my system.
So I figure that a good thing to do is to get the system like I want
it and then dd the primary drive. That way if I get a virus all I need
to do is dd the file back ontoo the hard drive. So I suppose that I
will need to put grub in the boot loader. Does this soun doable? Who
is gacious enough to help? WHich distro do you recommend? I was
thinking of using PHLAK but in my hands I have xubunt
6.1, mepis 2003.10.02, Slax 4.2.0, and mepis 3.4-3

Re: dd if=hda1 of=whatever ???????

2008-10-02 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Assuming that you have another machine with enough space to hold the Window$
drive, you can:
Boot both machines in Linux.
From the one with the Window$ installation:
dd if=/dev/?da0|ssh [EMAIL PROTECTED] cat - > my-windoze.iso

But I would just install the last Kubuntu, setup Windoze in a virtual
machine and replace the file every time it gets screwed.
Good luck...

Re: Easy Wine+IE6 setup (was Re: FW: On topic message about Off topic messages Various Solutions) URI Exploits

2008-10-02 Thread Charles Jones
Sorry If I didn't make it clear: I was not suggesting that IE is a
decent browser or that anyone should install it for any other reason
that ones similar to what you mention in your first paragraph. Sadly
there are quite a few Cisco web-based applications, among a few others,
that only work in IE, not to mention sites like MSDN and extra
functionality for things like Outlook Web Access. For these rare
instances I would rather fire up IE6 in wine rather than boot a VM or
keep a spare laptop around just for use IE.

Lisa Kachold wrote:
The only practical uses for IE6 that I have found are testing browser
CSS or Javascript, Extended Validation Certificates, and of course,
email filtering maintenance in Sharepoint and Outlook.

I haven't found anything that even touches 1/2 of what FireBug, Web
Development, NoScript, Flickr or the other great plugins available for
FireFox 3.0 provides for IE!

Opera is a nice browser and will work, unlike FireFox 3, with
Silverlight and some of the web site live conferencing sites that are
still broken (ah, I mean "URI secure"). Opera is a fine phone browser
BTW, if you run your own applications on a PDA.

Firefox 3.0 now protects systems from URI handling exploits (which
allow a computer to be completely taken over via browser in Firefox
2.0.0.5 and/or Explorer (especially when installed together in a
Microsoft box via "chrome" see http://www.metasploit.com).

These exploits were especially insidious since they often began
through a simple trip to a website, and are nearly impossible to track
back to the source when XSS proxy exploits are included (which show
only the packet traffic to the Apache system with the XSS holes - like
Google or another famous public site everyone frequents. These
dangerous exploits are still in place [even to the point of allowing
for control of your internal DSL routers - seeing all of your
protected cache, passwords and browser history]) so everyone should
immediately upgrade their older Linux Firefox to 3.0! Generally, all
you would have seen would have been a File Not Found after a pause, as
the nice encrypted tunnel over port 80/443 sets up to announce you
everytime you come online to the attacker irregardless of your DHCP
address.

Sometimes, it's just easier to buy a nice DHCP key, move off your
files and rebuild under a nice Fedora 9 or Ubuntu - and get all the
newest features as well?

Just thought I would mention that I've found this to be the easiest
way to setup Internet Exploder 6 on linux:

http://www.tatanka.com.br/ies4linux/page/Installation

It has a nice installer that sets it all up for you, including flash9
plugin, etc.

I find sadly windows runs better in virtual box on linux then directly
installed. That said I would connect two drives and boot to a live cd
like the kubuntu disk ad do the dd
