Re: List of Command Line Tools

2009-05-16 Thread Mark Jarvis

Try this for a very basic list of commands. Sorry, it doesn't
include
such things as writing
CDs or DVDs or downloading/upgrading programs or
lots of things that can be done with
the utilities that come with the
standard desktop. Check out "Linux Cookbook" by Carla
Schroder. Great
book!

BlenderCAD Workshop 05-17-09

2009-05-16 Thread Matthew A Coulliette
Hi all,

Just a reminder that there is a BlenderCAD workshop tomorrow at my house
from 12-6pm. Everyone is invited. BYOE. Topics I need help with
include: IPCop, SME server, & Ubuntu server. If you are familiar with
the topics listed I would love your help getting things working,
however, there are workstations you can use if you would like to
contribute in other ways, or just want to come and learn how to use
Blender. Note: that learning how to use Blender is a necessary part of
our project, although, it is not the end goal. See the plug webpage for
the address:

vim : file-based text editing
sed and tr: stream-based text editing
pine : POP/IMAP mail
slrn : Usenet
yum/aptitude/emerge : package management
bc : math
links/lynx : web browsing
find : finding files based on @CRITERIA
xargs : dealing with command lines that don't fit in 32768 chars
cdrecord/growisofs : recording CDs and DVDs
perl/php/ruby : complicated programming tasks that can't be done in bash
gcc/g++ : even more complex programming tasks that can't be done in Perl/PHP
make : managing builds of things that require compilation
cvs/svn : source code control
imagemagick : doing things with graphics (has C/C++/Perl/$FOO bindings)

...the main things that I'd want that don't exist right now on the command
line are a full-featured web browser (JavaScript, Flash, JPEGs), a PDF
viewer, and a personal finance program. (Serious image editing requires a
pixmapped Display and will always require a pixmapped Display, for reasons
which should be obvious.) Flash and the full functionality of PDF are
impossible to implement fully on the command line.

I do a ton of things on the command line, and always have a konsole or xterm
open. I also do a ton of things in various X11 apps, so I'm not the world's
best reference for command-line stuff. Caveat user.

I recognize that you are a top-post guy but that doesn't mean that it's
reasonable to ignore all mail list protocols...

You clicked Reply (to the Yet another PGP thread) instead of just
starting a new thread which means that this topic will be threaded
within that one.

There will be some who don't care but those of us who do use threads in
their mail client find this objectionable as it tends to disintegrate
the whole purpose of using threaded mail clients.

Thanks

I considered Biosphere a big fat nothing and with nothing
around it as a fallback worth seeing [a wasted trip to a

time to spend a half-day at Taliesin West

If you take the time to read a bit about Frank Lloyd Wright
and his work first and check out a 'coffee table' book or two
first, you'll probably be able to convice the tour leader to
let you 'hang back' and drink in the energy in the building.
Next trip I'll probably do the 'Behind the Scenes' trip.

I talking my way into being able to self guide this way at

well worthwhile.

The Phoenix Valley is a huge metropolis with lots of big-city stuff to
check out, so if you haven't, I recommend checking out:

The Phoenix Art Museum
The Phoenix Science Center
Tempe Town Lake
The Phoenix Zoo
Some other zoo everyone is talking about in the far west valley that I
haven't visited yet and am too lazy to Google...
Papago Park
Arizona Capitol
The light rail route - take all of it, for fun, and end up at Super Target
Various golf courses, if you're into that
Pop the Soda Shop

Since you're from the Pacific Northwest, I'm going to assume you have
an above-average taste in coffee, in which case then, I recommend
visiting:

Cartlel Coffee Lab (Downtown Tempe)
Solo Cafe (Tempe near the Guad)
E61 Espresso Bar at Liberty Market (Downtown Gilbert)
Copper Star Coffee (Downtown Phoenix)
Press Coffee (Northeast Phoenix)
Coffee VanGo (Tucson)

Also, there's a slew of stuff that happens everywhere on weekends and
sometimes weekdays. ASU and UAT sometimes bring in geek-famous
celebrities like Steven Hawkings and Ray Kurvweil for public talks
ImprovAZ organizes medium-to-large-scale pranks every now and then,
and there's the First Friday art walk in downtown Phoenix. I
typically find stuff listed on Yelp or by trolling the Twitter public
feed for #PHX. I actually know an ASU student that has lived on free
food for a week by doing this, too. :)

Re: OT: Most fun in Arizona?

2009-05-16 Thread keith smith

I would recommend visiting Tombstone http://www.tombstoneweb.com/ .

I would also recommend a day trip to Bisbee. You will see houses built on the
side of the mountain, an very large open pit mine, and you can take a mine tour.

http://bisbeearizona.com/content/

Old Tucson Studios http://www.oldtucson.com/

I have not been there since the place burned and was rebuilt. Many westerns
have been filed at Old Tucson Studios.

Kitt Peak National Observatory http://www.noao.edu/kpno/

I think you can visit the Yuma Territorial Prison
http://www.azparks.gov/Parks/YUTE/index.html

Chiricahua Mountains http://www.nps.gov/chir/

All of these are from Southwestern Arizona, except Yuma, because that is where
I have spent most of my life.

No I have not spent time in the Yuma Territorial Prison.

I too liked washington with everythingbeing so spread out every thing
was a scenic road trip. I would say in AZ sedona is a good day trip,
in town the science center. It is fun to take folks from states with
real lakes to see the tempe town lake.

What are the most fun things to do in Arizona?
I moved here from Washington state 8 years ago
and while I am now aclimated and glad to be here,
I do miss all of the incredible variety of things that
we so much enjoyed doing in Western Washington.
When we have guest from out of town, I am hard
pressed to think of things to suggest.

So, what do you good plug friends recommend?

Re: looking to hire someone at my work

2009-05-16 Thread mike Enriquez
In this bad economy a job is a job! And Boston is a wonderful place to
visit and work. Before I would consider a job in Boston or in New
England I would consider this: they like people educated in New England,
don't take your Arizona Car there because the salt used in the winter
will eat up your car body,it is an expensive place to
live, transportation is great if you can live and work in the areas
serviced by the subway, working on the Hi-Tech loop would work, people
in New England don't have a high opinion of Westerners, Senior citizens
are rough in the grocery stores. Leave your handguns in Arizona they are
not allowed in Boston. Now don't get me wrong I love Boston I go there
every five years but it is like going to Guatemala, be careful when you
exit the airport.
I have a little experience in Boston I went to Harvard and worked in the
Boston Financial District.
Apply for the job and good luck!
