The host (*Ubuntu 10.04), on the other hand, seems unaffected and runs OK on

Question: does your particular Intel CPU have the "VTx" hardware
virtualization extensions?

A lot of the lower-end AMD chips have AMD's equivelent, "AMD-x". Way
too many lower-end Intel chips don't, even when they're in the same
price range or even above the AMD chips that do.

I have a low-grade Intel "Pentium dual-core" chip that lacks VT-x.
Drives me nuts.

The lack of VT-x will slow you down, but it shouldn't kill you in and of
itself. Which processes in task manager are the hogs? Windows Search 4.0
can eat it up. I uninstall that when I see it.

2010-07-04 Thread Kevin Fries
Actually yes, the problem is most likely not VBox, nut instead Windows. One
of the dirty little secrets MS does not readily release is that there is
more than one MS core, an it can only be canged during install. If you
installed Windows on that same VM that was dogging, it would very likely run
just fine... well as fine as MS Windows is capable of running, lol

I would check to see if the Intel CPU supports virtualization extensions
(VT-x, EPT). If so, check to be sure they're enabled in the bios. If
not, that would be at least part of the difference.

Many items can cause a serious load spike, from a firmware issue, to many of
the nic drivers, scsi drivers (as opposed to hda) so a full and complete
inventory of all pieces of the puzzle are required.

What is machine 1: (include boot dmesg and lsof)

What is machine 2: (include boot dmesg and lsof)

What version of VirtualBox are you using?

Assuming this is XP/Service pack 2, fully patched?

And of course, all communications are most successful if directed to the
right source:

Yes they do. The difference being that if public keys are going to be forged
in the circle of trust system, a whole lot of systems have to be compromised.
With PKI, you're putting all your eggs in that one basket. And if you lose
control of it. That's it. Game over. You're in trouble. And that's always
the issue with centralization of anything.

The biggest problem with security is that most (nearly 99%) do not
understand it,
the reasons for it or how to implement and use it. Those few that do
can largely be counted
as a very small number (less than 1,000) in the entire field and a lot
of them spent
years leaning how.

I personally know enough to know I *really* don't know nearly enough
(and perhaps just enough to
keep the honest people honest and that's about it).

as for the 2 models presented, each has its own Achilles heal.
