Re: OT: Teaching at a CC

2010-11-18 Thread Kevin Fries
As for a degree, the general rule is one degree above the one being sought.
So. A masters would be required for a BS program, and doctorate to teach in
a MS program. Some programs will allow industry expeience to stand for
teachers in an AS program in areas that are harder to fill such as CS,
math& science.

When I taught, I had no degree, but was certified by the state of Colorado
with 1 hrs of documented work in industry. I was then required to teach
mock classes in front of real students, faculty, and administrators.

I loved my time in the classroom, interacting with the students. Hated all
the rest. The only way I for one would ever consider going back to it would
be as a retirement, get out of the house once or twice a week kind of
situation. For Lisa sugar coated the nightmare of politicking at a modern
college.

I was offered by a major university (Regius University) to finish my degree
and come teach for them, and understand its not as bad at that level, but
choose the corporate world because it was so nasty at the CC.

Good Luck

The community colleges generally require a master's degree to teach. In
some departments, such as the one I'm in, industry experience and
knowledge can stand in lieu of the degree. CSE, math and science will
likely always require a master's degree. There's generally lots of
competition for those as well. CIS might not require the master's degree.

Getting in as part-time faculty can be difficult. Getting on full-time is
far more difficult.

It would have been good to talk to you about this at the Stammtisch last
night :).

I believe GNU/Linux is taught to some level at every community college in
Maricopa County. Randy Larson runs the biggest program over at Estrella
Mountain Community College and is the person most likely to be looking
for instructors. Based on reported limited offerings at the rest of the
community colleges, I believe we have the second largest program at Mesa
Community College.

When I was interviewing at MCC they placed a lot of emphasis on having
prior classroom instruction experience. Being known for group
presentations and good organization might be sufficient if you have a
recommendation from another instructor and the right opening is available.

If you have a master's degree or PhD you might want to also consider UAT,
DeVry, Grand Canyon and UofP.

Good catch. Same restriction applies to Home Premium.

However, Vista Ultimate (which is what I have btw) has these additional
terms:
4. USE WITH VIRTUALIZATION TECHNOLOGIES. You may use the software
installed on
the licensed device within a virtual (or otherwise emulated) hardware
system on the licensed
device. If you do so, you may not play or access content or use
applications protected by
any Microsoft digital, information or enterprise rights management
technology or other
Microsoft rights management services or use BitLocker. We advise against
playing or
accessing content or using applications protected by other digital,

rights management technology or other rights management services or
using full volume disk

drive encryption.

When referring to windoze EULAs, it's sometimes important to be specific
about which "edition" of which version of windoze.

They have certainly altered the EULA
http://www.microsoft.com/About/Legal/EN/US/IntellectualProperty/UseTerms/Default.aspx

section 3, b. (downloaded pdf from that site) from windows 7
professional, and its the same with Win Vista Home Premium

"Use with Virtualization Technologies. Instead of using the software

software within only one virtual (or otherwise emulated) hardware
system on the licensed computer. When used in a virtualized
environment, content protected by digital rights management
technology, BitLocker or any full volume disk drive encryption
technology may not be as secure as protected content not in a
virtualized environment. You should comply with all domestic and
international laws that apply to such protected content."

That was as of today.

Do small city colleges suffer the same fate? I have a brother that
works for a small state college in UT, teaching CS and IT courses, and
he loves it. Pay/retirement/time off is excellent, and has politics
like any job would have.

Is it worse in larger cities? Is this case the exception? Or are CS/IT
folk less inclined to play politics?

Phoenix Linux Security Team Schedule/Venue Change for 2011

2010-11-18 Thread Lisa Kachold
Starting in January 2011, The Phoenix Linux Security Team will be moving to
Gangplankhq.com on every other Wednesday night, from 18:00 (6PM) to 21:00
(9:00).

We will be sharing the great Chandler Gangplank facilities with their
community crew for "HackNight" which is not really security specific.
For our security labs, we will setup our own Wifi as needed.
For our Presentations, we have smaller rooms as well as a new overhead
projector and audio.
We also have a great deal of equipment that has been donated that we can use
in the way of hubs for 802.3 networking.
For those of us with the ability to tether our 802.1 networks to a jail
broken device, for a socks proxy, we might setup '"external" network views
with ip forwarding to a hub for fun.

Everyone felt that this would allow more people to get a real team working
together. While the distance to Chandler is prohibitive, we will still be
carpooling. We also have the ability to demonstrate network specific things
and use backtrack for LIVE presentations, rather than being constrained by
the HIPPA compliant network at JCL.

We will no longer be using the facilities at John C. Lincoln Hospital's
Cowden Center in North Phoenix.
We will no longer be meeting on Saturday or Tuesday but the 1st and 3rd
Wednesday.

We really want to thank everyone over at Gangplankhq.com for allowing
community to florish!

2010-11-18 Thread Lisa Kachold
Yes, we are going to join you at UAT on the 11th.

NO, we don't need anything special and we will be happy to assist anyone who
would like help with any build, especially Backtrack4R2.

I have more than a few biuld USB keys with distros for Notebooks without a
DVD/CD.
Although we are sure you have everything in the way of equipment for builds
and all the staff you might need for assisting the public.

Since a great deal of our time every other week is spent building tools for
people attending once in a while and teaching people how to startup a build
and configure their video and determine their ethernet card type (for
airmon/airsnarf/airpwn) and it's just in time for Christmas, we will be
joining you. Note: We will not be engaging in any network "monitoring",
identification, or encroachment/pentesting or bringing any flags.

Next year our Hackfests move to Gangplankhq on Wednesday nights.
