Re: Getting a Linux admin job in Europe?
The way the German landscape for IT workers is, the company must prove they cannot hire a national to perform the work and your skills are required. Once the company does that, they must sponsor you and or a person must sponsor you. They must prove sufficient income to fully support you in the event you lose your job. Once that is complete, the rest is a blast! As it has been said, yes, you will need to learn the language. Germany has a lot of young IT, so in the IT field you will not be in too terrible shape as you learn it, but you will need to learn it! Make sure you know which dialect you will need also before you start trying to learn. There are two primaries and they are not identical!!! It is not a latin based language like Spanish, Italian and Mexican, where you learn one and you can skim by on the others, the two varying dialects in Germany are different enough that will need to know the difference. Granted, I do believe once you get a handle on it, you can distinguish between the two and understand both. You also have to remember, the German Chancellor just said the multi-cultural system has failed. The melting-pot mentality is no longer a go there and they are requiring the proper language. So you will need to show you are willing to assimilate to the German culture. Which shouldn't be too hard, the German culture is vastly superior to any other culture in the world... Just ask any German, they'll tell you lol flame retardent suit on Rosetta stone has a really good German program. I had my daughter on it and in a few months she was going to town! The hardest thing I recall was learning to deal with the reallybigwordsbecausetheyliketojumblewordstogether. Once you get passed that, or used to that, it will be a LOT of fun. So, in the words of the great SUSE lizard... Have a lot of fun! On Fri, Mar 18, 2011 at 10:58 PM, S Kreimeyer skrei...@gmail.com wrote: I didn't spend much time in Germany, but you will have a very difficult time if you only speak English. Larger cities have a high percentage of English speaking people, but more rural areas have very few bilingual residents. Also, in eastern Germany older adults (35+) are less likely to know English, since it wasn't taught in schools in that region until a few decades ago. If you plan on staying there for a while, then you will probably find yourself in situations where you need to know German. The good news is that the language isn't terribly hard to learn (though I'm far from fluent). Many words are easily identifiable to English counter-parts. I found Rosetta Stone extremely helpful as an introduction to the language. I would invest in a grammar book or a formal class, though. German grammar rules are very hard to intuit from an English-speaking perspective (separable prefixes were a mind-blow for me), which is how Rosetta teaches. I'm afraid I can't offer much insight into the IT job situation. I've been told that there is a dearth of engineers in the country, so that might extend to other technical professions, like IT. I hope that helps. On Fri, 2011-03-18 at 22:20 -0700, Brian Weaver wrote: Anyone know the ins and outs of landing an IT job in Europe. Specifically interested in Germany. Anyone here done it? Am 18. Mar, 2011 schwätzte Brian Weaver so: Anyone know the ins and outs of landing an IT job in Europe. Specifically interested in Germany. Anyone here done it? Is knowing German a must ? Catch me after a meeting and we'll talk. Knowing German is not required, but makes things much easier. Being a US citizen does have certain advantages. If you're serious about it, start participating in the local germanic community. You'll have opportunities to learn the language and you'll pick up important career contacts. Again, talk to me after a meeting :). Or just go to the Tempe Stammtisch on a Friday. I don't make it very often, but the others can be helpful. http://www.LuftHans.com/Tempe-Stammtisch For something specific, look at Solar One, Dial or one of the other German-owned companies here in town and see what openings they have. Re: Debian Sarge/Etch Build ImageMagick/PerlMagick, and apt-get
I addressed the apt-get errors with legacy debian sarge and etch in the following ways: On Wed, Mar 9, 2011 at 9:02 PM, Lisa Kachold lisakach...@obnosis.comwrote: 0) Evidently the 4.1 gcc could not build PerlMagick. snip 1) Debian sarge could have been updated to etch, and full apt-get package updates competed at some point in the past. However these sources appear to no longer be available? All debian sarge are considered no longer stable (due to known limitations and issues) for production, but updates and sources have been moved to archive.debian.org (along with etch) So your /etc/apt/sources.list would now have to be changed to read: *deb http://archive.debian.org/debian sarge main contrib or deb http://archive.debian.org/debian etch main contrib * Run: # apt-get update Reference: http://www.debian.org/distrib/archive *For people with partially updated sarge to etch, and broken package management:* Go back over the upgrade steps: Update /etc/apt/sources.list file to reflect the archive repos: # apt-get update Search for the latest kernel and install it # apt-get install linux-image-686. Expect to run # apt-get -f install Review the grub menu list for new kernel and verify it is the default at boot. # apt-get dist-upgrade Verify removed, installed and upgraded and let it go… When prompted choose some options for debconf. “Dialog” will display debconf questions and you can ignore questions with a priority less than “medium”. You will be asked if you want to adduser to create sytem-wide readable home dirs. You can opt no (but it does increase security/privacy). The x-server package may not be installed during an upgrade so you will be warned to check for it following the process. You will be warned packages changed, for instance ProFTPd may need some help following the upgrade due to some changes in how it’s compiled and configured. Portmap needed to know if it should be bound to loopback, you can tell it NO. There were a few other program specific questions that you must answer; just accept the defaults. ARM v. Mini-ITX
I agree that to be as Green as possible is worth it. If you're looking for a firewall? Why not get a a decent commercial grade router/vpn? The works already done. You don't have to configure a new box. It's embedded in the ROM. Costs about the same as a mini or pico itx would cost anyway. Sorry about the html emails. They didn't include just sending them in their new software update so I had to downgrade to the version that had txt only. Many IT persons are so maxed that to have an addtional project is burdening to them. They don't want anymore busy-ness. If the cost and time ratio were drastically different I would say the cost factor was in favor of building a box. In this case I personally would go for something already set up, unless I just had and extra Mini-Itx lie-ing around. Minis avg 2x the cost. Pico avg 4x the cost of an ATX. A good commercial router/vpn is about in the middle of the two cost wise. gk --- Secure Reply (option enabled): http://www.CryptoHeaven.com/ch/web-mail.jsp?uId=3537572subject=Re%3A+Re%3A+ARM+v.+Mini-ITX Re--ARM-v.-Mini-ITX.eml Description: Binary data --- PLUG-discuss mailing list - PLUG-discuss@lists.plug.phoenix.az.us To subscribe, unsubscribe, or to change your mail settings: http://lists.PLUG.phoenix.az.us/mailman/listinfo/plug-discuss
