Re: cube Farm Rackspace with link to video

2011-07-14 Thread Vimal Shah
Coming from Motorola/GD, the 8-ft cubicle was my escape from everyone and
was a place where I could code in solitude, and of course surf/play games!
Being at a start up, the transition to a cube farm was difficult at first,
but has proven to be much more productive. My guess would be it seems to
make communicating to team members much more fun and welcoming. I'm not sure
of the effectiveness in a farm of 50 or 100, but in our environment of 12
it's been awesome!

I'm sure it increases production, it's hard to surf the internet all day and
play games without walls to hide what you're doing. :)

I like clonzilla for base metal backups. very handy with windows based OS's
dd is great for anything else.

If a filesystem is< 90% full, a filesystem-based tool like partimage will be
a lot faster than using dd. dd copies *everything*, including stuff that you
don't need to copy, like free sectors. If it's a Linux system, it'd be faster
to just mke2fs -j the partitions on the new disk, cp -a the stuff off the old
disk, and reinstall the bootloader. (dd's brainlessness makes it suitable for
weird filesystems or partitions without filesystems, though.)

Windows is another can of worms full of Pandora's boxes. You need something
like partimage or clonezilla to transfer that to another disk, because some
files in Windows have hardcoded sector positions and must be exactly in those
positions.

If you're not using windows or FAT, you could give fsarchiver a shot,
it's the successor to partimage, has a lot of features, and it seems
like it would be quite a bit easier to use than clonezilla.

try john the ripper?

Save the encrypted string to a test file and run it through john the ripper

Conezilla vs dd

2011-07-14 Thread Mark Phillips
I bought a larger hard drive for my laptop, so I need to clones my existing
drive to the new drive. I have one of those cool usb hardrive caddies for my
new drive, so all I need to do is fire up a live cd and clone the disk. I
know I will have to repartition the new drive once it is cloned to recapture
the new space to the new drive.

I was wondering if the list has a preference for clonezilla over a plain ol'
dd to clone a drive.
