Re: Low power customizable NAS?

2010-10-05 Thread AZ RUNE
I use a modified ASUS 1201N netbook running the N330 Atom Dual Core and the
nVidia Ion graphics.

I modified it to run with 4GB RAM and a 640HDD

It has become my mobile mini-entertainment server. I have it partitioned
with dual boot Ubuntu and Mythbuntu 10.04

When I go home I plug it in to a 42" HD TV and I have it grab my TV via USB
adapter, I can play Wow at 24 fps 1080p on the big screen and while a movie
is playing I can still get stuff done using Twinview and terminal on the the
netbook (love HDMI output).

It also has VGA output and I have used it to save my boss for presentations
at work. While doing the presentation I showed how to do a basic dualboot
installation in Virtual Box so others could follow along. My company is in
the process of migrating to Linux so everyone had to learn to dual boot.

It is 3.5 pounds and I get 3 hours battery life on gaming or HD tv watching,
streaming to my girlfriends work via https website so she can watch Gordon
Ramsey shows recorded on the Mythbuntu side of the dual boot.

I get just over 4 hours on the intel graphics if I switch it in the BIOS. I
normally leave it on nVidia though. I also run crossover from codeweavers to
run silverlight and use IE to watch netflix in Ubuntu.

It is a trooper of a machine while I am looking at a quad core for some
specific tasks this machine has allowed me to be very versatile at work and
home in tackling technology issues in day-to-day stuff.

Hope this helps your decision,

Now the question is at what level to settle on. There's the SheevaPlug
>>> (and similar) that use up about 10 watts but need more storage and can't

I have a friend that does DJ work with a subscription to a closed music

In the repository there are 4 categories of music he wants to download with
4,000+ songs per category

Is there a program that will do that automated over http if given the url?
Or would it have to be custom built?

I have to respect some seriously restrictive policies, for example: I am not

The challenge:
I want to be able to boot the laptop native in windoze, and I want to be
able to boot it from a USB drive in Linux and run the same XP machine
virtual over its native partition, all this with no noticeable modifications
to the Registry (or better NO modifications to the Registry) unless it is
something that I can bill as harmless and understandable (like a "profile").

Can it be done?

I also want the reverse, to boot windoze and run Linux virtual over its own
partition, but that one is trivial...:)
Thanks!

Hi Sean,

I see a lot of PLUG has answered your other questions and I would like to
hit one for you:

There are plenty of ways to go about getting your windows games to run on
your Ubuntu machine. I run WoW and Diablo2 ( I am a Blizzard Fan ) from my
machine via Crossover. VM's of windows can't handle the game requirements
and often make the host system lag. I do have some VM's running because I
love to stay current on other OS's but I run all the MS programs in
Crossover. There is WINE (Wine Is Not an Emulator) as the free version of
Crossover but with the paid for option I can back up the MS programs and
reload my OS or switch distros and dump them back on my machine with no
hassle.

I am always available off list if you want to talk about the game stuff.

Oh did I mention I am giving a security presentation tonight

Look for nautilus updates and anything involving gnome as well. Maybe just
dumb luck but if you update the file browser (provided their are updates out
there) then maybe it will redo how it reads the drive channels and fix
itself. You might also try updating the kernel, but that seems unrelated.
Still I have seen weird stuff work before. Now if you want to solve WHY it
is doing that you could go to the source (sorry for the pun - well maybe not
that sorry) and hit the dev hackers at gnome.org. They are always looking
for a list to support a hacker, well donate $10 bucks to one that can answer
this question.

You help out FOSS dev thru Gnome
You find out why your install went wacky
You make contacts in the FOSS community

Give it a whirl who knows.

Re: OT: Phone Warz -Google and Android Lock Antennae

2009-09-29 Thread AZ RUNE
I went and read the article in full and I say that my views runs with the
writer of the article. It really doesn't sound like the MOD'er, "Cyanogen”
tried to do anything deliberately to redistribute the non-open source
applications Google includes on the G1 (mine is white, so I was intrigued by
this article). He just included the them because they left the binaries out
there for people. "Cyanogen” just grabbed them and compiled them because
Google didn't pay enough attention to what it lay out there for people to
play with. Also, given how the OOBUE (Out Of Box User Experience) anchors
the G1 to a gmail account it would seem natural to include the app if the
binary was avaiiable and out in the open to download. Google needs to be
more precise what portions they consider open-source. I suppose - having
not read further into this thought - they need the make the non-FOSS stuff
available in the market place if they can no longer distribute these CSS
(Closed Source Software) app's when they release a MOD'ed version of
Android.

What are you seeing that leads you to conclude that "it goes slow"?
Ethernet ports typically negotiate the highest speed automatically.
Note, GigE ports often don't achieve full speed, due to slower bus speed
(the NIC is no longer the slowest link in the chain).

Re: Ubuntu 9.04 Run Level

2009-05-05 Thread AZ Rune
Ok,

==
There is not /etc/inittab file in Ubuntu because Ubuntu uses
/etc/event.d/rc-default file
You can fix this problem by editing /etc/event.d/rc-default file
First backup file,
Code:
sudo cp /etc/event.d/rc-default /etc/event.d/rc-default.bakup
Open vi /etc/event.d/rc-default
Code:
sudo vi /etc/event.d/rc-default
Find all lines read as - telinit 2 and replace with telinit 3
Code:
telinit 3
Reboot the system
==

Every time I used either "sudo vi," "sudo gedit" or even forcing my way into
"su" did not stop the OS from resetting the telinit back to 2?!?!!?

==

But you can simply enter:
# init 3
if X is still running:
# ps -ef |grep X
or
# pkill X
You should then be able to do whatever you need!

==
I logged into root in terminal and the init 3 worked both commands to stop X
both caused Ubuntu to auto reboot X argh! I know these commands would work,
but when I went to Upstart their wiki was no help in trying to make
something stick so I can get into Run Level that does not use X so I can
install the driver.

::smacking head in wall :: wont give up without dain bramage, hehehehe
