Re: Migrating to Mac

If you want to paste in a Mac Terminal, the same keyboard commands for Mac
programs work in the terminal. -C to copy, -V to paste. Check this
page <http://mactips.dwhoard.com/mactips/x11-and-terminal/copy-and-paste>for
other combinations with X11, etc.

Re: OT: bookmark storage?

2011-09-15 Thread Donn
I have seen instructions for XMarks to store it's data on dropbox but
haven't done it myself. I use it on Firefox, Safari, Chrome and IE, on
Windows XP, 7, Linux, and OS X and it works very well. It occasionally gets
confused on a specific PC/Browser and I need to Download from server and
overwrite local bookmarks, but for the most part it works very well. The
Cross-Browser requirement is the catcher, since each browser stores it's
Bookmarks in a slightly different format, some translation is required.

OT: Compile a cpp file on HPUX with gcc

2009-05-15 Thread Donn
OT-OT-OT-OT
All,

I hope you don't mind if I ask a question way out of my comfort zone. We
have a cpp file with three .h header files that I would like to compile in
our Oracle servers (HPUX 11). The gcc compiler is installed on the HP
servers, but the source code does not contain a make file, so we don’t know
how to compile it in HPUX (not being programmers, but IT nerds). Does anyone
have any pointers?

Here’s some information on the program from the source company:

The files are:

lpssend.cpp

wdsocket.h

wdprotocol.h

wdprotocolcmd.h

What is LPSSend?

This is a sample project designed to be used as a tool to
help

integrate with the new Loftware Print Server (used for barcode label
printing across the enterprise). This program opens a socket

connection to the LPS, sends a print job, receives status of the job from
the LPS and then disconnects. LPSSend is a multiplatform application thus
works on Windows as well as other operating systems.

Operating Systems known to compile LPSSend without error:

Linux/UNIX:

Redhat 5.1, 5.2, 6.0, 6.1, 6.2

Corel 1.1

SCO UNIX Open Server 5.x

Debian 2.1 r4

FreeBSD 4.0

NetBSD 1.4.1

MicroSoft:

Windows2000

WindowsNT

Any help you can provide would be greatly appreciated.

I have gone through three of these routers and the symptoms of imminent
failure were always exactly as you described. I have heard that replacing
the firmware with Tomato or DD-WRT will fix the issue (unless the hardware
is failing), but frankly, replacing it with a D-Link has worked wonders. No
intermittant disconnects. Faster access. Better configuration.

What are you using to view the csv file in Windows? If you are using Excel,
setting the default font to 'Arial Unicode' will prevent the character
munging. If you are using Notepad, you have no hope. Download and use
Notepad++ which has full UTF-8 support and try opening the csv file.

Re: DVD-R

2008-06-21 Thread Donn
Open K3B and go to Settings; Configure K3B; Devices and check to see if your
drive is setup properly./ You might have to press the 'Refresh' button. If
that doesn't work, you might try adding a new drive and deleting the old
one.

FWIW, I had a similar problem with a Plextor drive that stopped working for
DVD-Rs, but still worked for CDRs (glad I paid extra for it). I replaced the
drive and the new one works fine.

The latest Mandriva 2008 Spring has been a joy to install and use. All
multimedia capabilities you would expect are easily installed and
configured. The nVidia drivers are offered to be loaded at install if
applicable. Compiz sets up with a few clicks. Respositories setup easily and
program installs are a breeze. You can try it out with the Live version,
even including the nVidia drivers. I have been using Mandrake/Mandriva for
years and the last two versions have been vastly improved over previous
releases.

Thank you Austin. That was part of my point. OS X has ONE Price and One
version. It also has none of the typical Windows issues with Registry hell,
reboot after sneezing hard, corruption of basic services by applications (at
least typically), etc.

As far as 'Free' or Open Source' vs. proprietary software is concerned, I
try to take a realistic view. It is somewhat irritating to me to hear 'but
that is proprietary software!' as if something smelled bad. I am not trying
to be argumentative here, I just want to make a point. I agree on principal
in the building block theory of Open Source software, that is that knowledge
should be shared and move us all forward without wasting effort in
constantly recreating code to do the same things. This is an admirable goal.
I try to support open source software that I use and appreciate. I generally
do not use free software, since it is generally, but not always worth what
you paid for it.

What I don't agree with is the Microsoft method of market domination by
intimidation. I have a great deal of admiration for what Apple has done with
their products in most cases. They are not beyond draconian methods either,
but the shear elegance of some of their hardware and software is difficult
to argue with. No one else in consumer electronics even comes close, except
possibly Nintendo, and very rarely Sony (believe it or not). I have a 24"
iMac and it is the best piece of hardware (and software with Leopard) I have
ever owned. At their core, Microsoft seems to be about one thing, holding on
to their 'lands and titles' like the Nobles of old. Apple seems to aspire to
something better in every product they sell. They don't always hit the mark,
but in my mind, the aspiration is the thing that deserves recognition and
admiration.

These are more words than I have ever written on this list, and I apologize
for the diatribe. Please take no offense.

I have seen this problem on quite a few Distros when using a PCIX video
card. The simple solution is to set the Video to 'Vesa' when installing,
then once running, change the Video card configuration and driver. This has
worked with Ubuntu, Kubuntu, Mandriva, etc.

I don't use Ubuntu, but I saw this on CNET (link from Digg) the other day
and it seems a possible workaround fix for your problem.

Re: OT: open source/ hardware video recorder in NY Times

2008-01-07 Thread Donn
The HDHomeRun is QAM compatible. All 'local' channels are mandated by the
FCC to be carried unencrypted over basic cable and are generally available
using a QAM (Quadrature amplitude modulation) compatible tuner.

Re: your mail

2007-12-31 Thread Donn
There are several that I have heard of. The Linux Router
Project<http://pigtail.net/LRP/index.html>is small and can be run from
a floppy, flash drive, or external Hard drive.
I have heard of Smoothwall <http://www.smoothwall.org/get/> being run from a
Flash Drive, and this
link<http://community.smoothwall.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=16604>may
help.

I have personally used the Mandriva Flash v2008 and highly recommend it as a
bootable Flash Distribution. It is a complete Desktopdistribution on a 4Gb
Flash Drive, but it is not designed to be a firewall although it could be
configured to do so using iptables and writing logs to a HD or external
location.

Finally, the Yoggie Pico <http://www.yoggie.com/howItWorks.shtml> is a
complete Hardware Firewall in a Flash Drive type form factor.

Just some suggestions. Good luck.

Re: iMac

2007-06-10 Thread Donn

The iMac is a terrific machine. I have a 24" and love it. Rumors are that
there may be an update to the iMac line very soon (possibly next week - if
you believe them). I would wait until WWDC (next week) to see if this is
true. Sine the Powerbooks were just updated, this seems like a good
possiblilty.

I don't think you will save sales tax if the company has a physical presence
in the the State (which Apple does). I would go to the store and enjoy the
whole experience.

Hello,

I know this is a Linux newsgroup (Mint 3.0 is fantastic, IMHO), but I
did ask about an iMac a few months ago. I think I'm ready to purchase
the iMac.

I'm looking at the 20" iMac as it has a DVD writer built in. Is this a
good model? I'm basically using it for web surfing, e-mail and making
DVDs (home movies and the like).

Also, does it matter if I buy on-line or go to the store in the
Biltmore? On-line I would save about $120 in sales tax, but are there
any downsides (such as repair)?

Thanks for any advice.
