Re: OT: Speed Cams

2009-04-01 Thread Kenny McHenry
This is part of an april fools joke that KTAR is doing this year. Last year
the april fools was turning the 101 and the 51 into toll roads. each costing
$1.01 and $0.51 respectivly. this is the link to their story
http://ktar.com/?nid=6sid=1112673. Usually it's either the next day or at
least near the end of the day when they do their announcment of April
Fools!. So don't worry this is just an april fools joke.

We all know about the speed cams on the 51 and such, but these are being
put on the surface streets! They even have already planned where they
 will go: http://media.bonnint.net/az/15/1516/151641.jpg

I also heard on the radio this morning that they are lowering the 11mph
overspeed grace limit down to 5mph, which means if you go 5 mph over,
you will get auto-ticketed by a speed cam, and more likely to be pulled
 over by police using radar.

P.S. Apparently due to current flaws in litigation, you do not have
to pay a speedcam ticket as the law says you must be served in person
(How are they to know that you received the mail with the ticket, so
they can't put a warrant out for your arrest for not paying it).

This has been a public service announcement :-)

ktar announced about half an hour ago that the 350 speed cameras was an
april fools joke. http://ktar.com/?nid=6sid=1113496 . It was a good one and
at least I got a few laughs out of it.

Re: OT:Switch boosts ethernet?

2009-02-18 Thread Kenny McHenry
a switch will boost the power and act as a repeater for you. So yes putting
a switch in the middle of 2 - 200foot cables would work.

Maximum ethernet connection length is approx. 300 feet. If I need to
get to 400 feet, can I just put a switch in the middle of two 200 foot

Re: Linux without swap

2009-01-24 Thread Kenny McHenry
From what I have heard swap space isn't necessary like you were saying. In
netbooks they aren't using swap space, because it reduces the strain put on
the solid state harddrives that have a finite number of read/writes before
they go bad. I'd say that as long as you have enough memory in your computer
you would be perfectly fine with running without swap.

On Sat, Jan 24, 2009 at 10:45 PM, Stephen cryptwo...@gmail.com wrote:

I understand that swap is not as critical anymore with machines now
having 2, 4, and even larger amounts of Ram available. but aside from
being able to allow a more graceful recovery of a runaway process. how
needed is swap in a desktop machine?

reason i ask is I'm getting ready to try and cram a 3rd partition on a
macbook pro and the EFI boot schema it has can only deal with 4
partitions, but mac OSX has 2 of those and i have XP Pro in there as
well. and if i include swap space i will be at 5 not the limit of 4.

Re: dual monitor headscratcher

2009-01-07 Thread Kenny McHenry
Usually Xinerama will make it work. So you want to change xinerama 0 in
your xorg.conf to xinerama 1. That should get it to work. At least that's
what has gotten it to work for me before.
