Actually, I think it was a Palm V she had. It wasn't actually a phone. Well, we still have one. Battery died and she didn't want to pay 80% of the cost of a new device to fix the battery. If you mean a Treo phone, then a Motorola Cliq might be better, although it's not nearly as nice hardware-wise as the Nexus One. Blackberries are the only smartphones that really look like the Treo phones anymore. She's seen the storm. Blackberries are now out. After what Alan said about only running blessed programs on the Motorolas, Motorola is out. I keep hoping Motorola will clue in rather than die off, but, alas, it seems determined to die. ATT is the only major carrier that I know for certain can do voice and data simultaneously. Hmm, might have to consider that. I've been told the adroid will still work on ATT, but not as well at t-mobile. I don't need blinding speeds and am actually more concerned about latency. I do need to be able to use my phone for an Internet connection on days like today and yesterday when Cox is down for the count. Also for days when I'm on the road somewhere. I have occasional access to a MiFi from Verizon. That works well enough for my needs. It was far more reliable in the hospital than the hospital provided wifi. Unfortunately the device is in Atlanta this week, so I've been stranded. For contact sync at close range, I think most Android phones are at least capable of this, but you might need to add an app for it from Android Marketplace. I'm fine with apps from the marketplace. For my wife's phone I want to do everything through official channels, so the carrier can do tech support :). For my phone, I will want extra features and realize I'll likely have to go beyond stock for some of them. For other small transfers, I think you may have to use a web-service or email (which would work over WiFi, but not bluetooth) as an intermediary (unless you write your own application for it). If we can ssh in via wifi, I can build whatever we need :). Any phone-to-phone contact would probably not work unless both phones are unlocked and have the capability (e.g. two unlocked Android phones with an app for sync via bluetooth). OK. I'm more interested in it for me interacting with other people than for her phone. ciao, der.hans -- # http://www.LuftHans.com/Classeshttp://www.TwoGeekTechs.com/ # Director of Engineering, FonWallet Transaction Solutions, Inc. # We now return you to your regularly scheduled paranoia... --- PLUG-discuss mailing list - PLUG-discuss@lists.plug.phoenix.az.us To subscribe, unsubscribe, or to change your mail settings: http://lists.PLUG.phoenix.az.us/mailman/listinfo/plug-discuss --- PLUG-discuss mailing list - PLUG-discuss@lists.plug.phoenix.az.us To subscribe, unsubscribe, or to change your mail settings: http://lists.PLUG.phoenix.az.us/mailman/listinfo/plug-discuss --- PLUG-discuss mailing list - PLUG-discuss@lists.plug.phoenix.az.us To subscribe, unsubscribe, or to change your mail settings: http://lists.PLUG.phoenix.az.us/mailman/listinfo/plug-discuss

Actually it was last month. :P I said I wanted one to make iPhone users jealous of my flash playback. Alas, there's no sign of when if at all it will be available stateside. :( Sent from my BlackBerry Slowphone provided by Allfail -Original Message- From: stor...@storkus.com Date: Fri, 25 Sep 2009 15:46:03 To: Main PLUG discussion listplug-discuss@lists.plug.phoenix.az.us Subject: Nokia N900 I'm very surprised no one has brought this device up for discussion yet! It would appear to blow away the current Android and OpenMoko devices by packing a 600 MHz ARM proc, 256MB DRAM, a huge wad of flash, 802.11bg AND bluetooth, and--biggest of all--quad-band GSM AND a 3G radio compatible with T-Mobile USA. It also has USB2 and, curiously (I don't know exactly what it is) TV-Out. On the software side, it runs their distro called Maemo which, GUI-wise, has Qt at the core, though you can still run GTK apps like its predecessor the N810. It's almost entirely free software and hackable, one of the biggest ones that aren't is macromedia flash being included (presumably so you can play Youtube video--I couldn't see playing flash games on an ARM...). The way I (and a lot of others) see it, this is like the early OLPC's or eeepc's in terms of horsepower and (somewhat) memory. More than one person out there has suggested it could be used as a sort of hand-held file server. The geek in me is going even more nuts over buying this than the Sheevaplug since I could obviously do so much more with it. The few reviewers that have gotten their hands on it so far were mostly morons that obviously couldn't fathom the potential that could be unlocked from it. For instance, the keyboard gets griped at a lot. So? Get one of those roll-up USB keyboards from Thinkgeek: since it's a lightweight distro (Busybox was explicitly mentioned) and (hopefully full) kernel in there, I would presume that USBHID hasn't been neutered. So what do you all think? My current phone (a Motorola V3xx) is still working ok, and the N900 is nowhere near cheap...but, damn, it's making me drool! Should I get it or not? Are one of you planning on it? Mike P.S. Re: do NOT feed the trolls
Well put; This whole flame war kept my blackberry vibrating off the hook and drained my battery in half the usual time. We all have better things to spend our time on and even better ways to further our wonderfully diverse causes than an internet arguement. Sent from my BlackBerry Smartphone provided by Alltel -Original Message- From: der.hans [EMAIL PROTECTED] Date: Thu, 6 Nov 2008 11:43:26 To: quatschPLUG-discuss@lists.PLUG.phoenix.az.us Subject: do NOT feed the trolls moin moin, once again, I get an appropriate random sig quote for the email. Flame wars like this are easy to avoid. First and foremost, don't respond to trolling. The original post in the thread was completely off-topic and merely a troll post. I'm not characterizing the poster as a troll, just that one post. Ignoring the post would have been sufficient and appropriate. That goes for both people who agree with the post and people who disagree with it. Secondly, if you find yourself in a flame war and absolutely needing to respond, sit on it for a while. Give yourself a cool down period before posting. Thirdly, for every post, please consider how it will be received. This goes quintuply for posts into flame wars, especially in a limited medium like email. Does your post actually add content? Does it add name-calling or other inappropriate fuel to the fire? If it's doing the latter, please take time to remove the fuel. There is no need to attack anyone on this list! We have a variety of opinions on politics, religions and gastronomy in the group. We also a variety of opinions on far more important topics like editors, mail clients and programming languages :). That's all fine. Fourthly, ignore threads and posts you don't care about. This isn't about having thick skin, it's just time management :). I do appreciate those who try to read all messages, which I have also done in the past. But, if something just has no value to you please feel free to ignore it. Fifthly, realize that discussions are generally a good thing. Airing opionions and getting different perspectives is actually one of the values of PLUG. We just need to try to keep them constructive and factual. Listing good features of your favorite $application is good. Listing actual failings of $other_application is also good, e.g. editors that behave badly and wipe out files when the filesystem fills up. I personally don't appreciate the timing on the flame war. I spent Tuesday night doing something productive, helping with election monitoring. Now, rather than writing up what I observed as I was supposed to, I need to deal with an off-topic flame war. Most of the rest of you can just ignore it. If you don't like the thread use your mail client to ignore the thread or add a filter or just do like I did and skip all the mail with the flame war's thread. As one of the people who works to keep PLUG working I can't just ignore the flame war's consequences. We are a volunteer group with very few volunteers keeping things running. I find myself in a position of needing to find a technical solution to a social problem. Not a good position. We are always completely open to other volunteers helping out! Even with more volunteers we will be dependent on the PLUG community being considerate of others. There's no practical way we can keep up with dedicated attempts to cause problems. We depend on the community self-regulating. The community, in turn, depends on individuals to self-regulate. It's easy to have a destructive influence. Citizenship is striving to have a constructive influence. I know I sometimes fail in this, but I certainly try. I hope this email is taken as an attempt to be constructive. ciao, der.hans -- # http://www.LuftHans.com/http://www.LuftHans.com/Classes/ # Eternal vigilance is the price of liberty. -- Thomas Jefferson --- PLUG-discuss mailing list - PLUG-discuss@lists.plug.phoenix.az.us To subscribe, unsubscribe, or to change your mail settings: http://lists.PLUG.phoenix.az.us/mailman/listinfo/plug-discuss --- PLUG-discuss mailing list - PLUG-discuss@lists.plug.phoenix.az.us To subscribe, unsubscribe, or to change your mail settings: http://lists.PLUG.phoenix.az.us/mailman/listinfo/plug-discuss
