Re: OT: Phone Warz -Google and Android Lock Antennae

2009-10-01 Thread blake gonterman
After the initial shock wore off and the devs started looking around, a few
alternatives have emerged... One I've seen was to run a script that saved
the required closed-source apps to a file on the SDcard and then re-apply it
after flashing a rom with those bits missing... seems to me that's a good
way to get around the issue.
Google should have just let him have a distribution license so
this wouldn't happen... I guess this is just an example of growing pains
with a new OS.

Personally, I love Cyanogen's roms.. the absolute fastest I've seen, if not
always as stable as I'd like to see.

That's my 2c at least.

2009-09-29 Thread Matt Nesteruk
This article blows chunks. Here are some of my favourite moments;

"The reaction from the Android user and developer community has been
significant — emotion is running high."

Yes, emotions are flying across the Interwebs. Router and Firewall ACL's
indicate a spike in android emoticons. :o(

"Others are laying the case that Google should not sue this developer but
rather hire him to work for Google."

This is a new idea, or not. Maybe Cyanogen can be appointed the new Android
Czar.

"What you think of “MOD-ing” might vary depending on where you sit and from
where you draw your income."

I think the author struck a nerve here. I hope he does not mind if I use
portions of his article in my next publication. I think ill just change a
word, or two.

"When code at this level is modified, you cannot simply download an
application to the device and casually install it — you must re-flash your
device with an “image” of the code because low-level drivers must be
installed. Doing this means getting low-level control over the device —
often called “rooting” the device."

31337

"If a release turns a device into a brick or a new feature is requested, the
open source programmer can fix the code, add the feature, and then
re-release the code."

Sweet, I just bricked my phone. Dont they call it a brick for a reason?
This sounds like an excellent SDLC. "Sorry I bricked your phone" says the
developer, "Don't worry, someone else will fix it."

"He even included the new Android Market application — before Google did."

Whoops! This new feature must have not been in the test document.

"Some will find the boundaries too much and they will go UNDERGROUND."

Underground is just one of those words that sounds kewl when you say it.

"I don’t even mind if Google generates an obscene (legal) profit."

Are you telling me that Google is actually making money? Not only are they
making money, but obscene profits. NICE

"Can Google succeed commercially by protecting their interests and at the
same time keep Android open source?"

Can the author please get over it? Open Source has its place.

Re: OT: Phone Warz -Google and Android Lock Antennae

2009-09-29 Thread AZ RUNE
I went and read the article in full and I say that my views runs with the
writer of the article. It really doesn't sound like the MOD'er, "Cyanogen”
tried to do anything deliberately to redistribute the non-open source
applications Google includes on the G1 (mine is white, so I was intrigued by
this article). He just included the them because they left the binaries out
there for people. "Cyanogen” just grabbed them and compiled them because
Google didn't pay enough attention to what it lay out there for people to
play with. Also, given how the OOBUE (Out Of Box User Experience) anchors
the G1 to a gmail account it would seem natural to include the app if the
binary was avaiiable and out in the open to download. Google needs to be
more precise what portions they consider open-source. I suppose - having
not read further into this thought - they need the make the non-FOSS stuff
available in the market place if they can no longer distribute these CSS
(Closed Source Software) app's when they release a MOD'ed version of
Android.

My 2 yen :-)
