Great tools usually are the ones that let users do goofy things
without restraint

Its when people start needing the tool to nerf itself I get grumpy

Why should the application perform a task which ulimit can be
configured to address, if there is an abuse? ... and a
'sysadmin' who does such needs after being appraised of the
issue, not to be trusted with admin rights. Again the
solution is not in the space of the tool, but in the space of
the management of the affected system ;)

I work from home 3 days a week. Most of the time, in the morning and in the mid
afternoon, i have re-connect my vpn 10 - 15 times in as many minutes! REALLY
bothersome.

I say this, because I consider screen the essential tool for everything else I
do. When my vpn goes down while I am in the middle of something, all I have to
do is reconnect my vpn, login to the server that I was doing work on, and do a
screen -rd and I am RIGHT BACK to what I was doing!

The other reason I use screen is for very long running commands. Case in point,
I was converting a large cvs repository over to a clearcase vob, and I did the
effort in a screen. It took a few days to get all the cvs repository down on
the clearcase server, and about a week to do a clearfsimport to get the old cvs
data in the new vob. screen allowed me to detach and let it run for those 2
weeks.

I couldn't live without it.

mentioned no one has yet to mention screen, an almost vital component
in my toolbox for command line usage.

Other programs I use that I don't believe I've seen mentioned:

rtorrent - Torrents
mcabber - Jabber tool (connected to gchat)
uudeview - used to decode binary files from newgroups

I've tried both tin and slrn for newsgroup reading, both work great
for text, but for some reason seem to fail at binary newgroup usage in
my opinion (been over a year since I used newsgroups though so
couldn't say off the top of my head why now). I've found nget works
great for pure binaries though.

I've been trying to find a really good imap based command line email
client that blends almost perfectly with gmail and it's inability to
accurately implement imap according to the RFCs (basically something
that does similar to thunderbird but via command line instead). I've
tried mutt, but it generated extra emails whenever I send for some
reason (they appear in my inbox as replies of my email for some
reason, causing unnecessary clutter).

Always ME and MY threads that turn into these...

I shall never start a PGP test thread again.

Re: List of Command Line Tools

2009-05-16 Thread Mark Jarvis

Try this for a very basic list of commands. Sorry, it doesn't
include
such things as writing
CDs or DVDs or downloading/upgrading programs or
lots of things that can be done with
the utilities that come with the
standard desktop. Check out "Linux Cookbook" by Carla
Schroder. Great
book!

  Hi all,

Every once in a while someone mentions that: "they use the command line
for that", where "that" means almost "anything". Example: someone just
mentioned that they use the command line for email. I was wondering if
people that use the command line a lot could list a few of the programs
they use and what they are used for. Example: Irssi: instant messenger
for irc channels. Thanks.

vim : file-based text editing
sed and tr: stream-based text editing
pine : POP/IMAP mail
slrn : Usenet
yum/aptitude/emerge : package management
bc : math
links/lynx : web browsing
find : finding files based on @CRITERIA
xargs : dealing with command lines that don't fit in 32768 chars
cdrecord/growisofs : recording CDs and DVDs
perl/php/ruby : complicated programming tasks that can't be done in bash
gcc/g++ : even more complex programming tasks that can't be done in Perl/PHP
make : managing builds of things that require compilation
cvs/svn : source code control
imagemagick : doing things with graphics (has C/C++/Perl/$FOO bindings)

...the main things that I'd want that don't exist right now on the command
line are a full-featured web browser (JavaScript, Flash, JPEGs), a PDF
viewer, and a personal finance program. (Serious image editing requires a
pixmapped Display and will always require a pixmapped Display, for reasons
which should be obvious.) Flash and the full functionality of PDF are
impossible to implement fully on the command line.

I do a ton of things on the command line, and always have a konsole or xterm
open. I also do a ton of things in various X11 apps, so I'm not the world's
best reference for command-line stuff. Caveat user.

I recognize that you are a top-post guy but that doesn't mean that it's
reasonable to ignore all mail list protocols...

You clicked Reply (to the Yet another PGP thread) instead of just
starting a new thread which means that this topic will be threaded
within that one.

There will be some who don't care but those of us who do use threads in
their mail client find this objectionable as it tends to disintegrate
the whole purpose of using threaded mail clients.

Thanks

Craig
