It looks like you have Ad-Sense or something similar running already. As
long as you're bringing people in, you'll make a few bucks off the
 click-throughs.

My advice for getting people to stay is to bring a forum into the
website. I use phpBB on a website I started recently (
http://whoarethedead.com/), and it's about as easy as it gets. Boards
are a great way to give people a fun distraction while they're at the site.
For your purposes (community building, I presume), it would seem almost
essential. PhpBB has plenty of free tutorials, templates, a massive
community and easy session integration, which allows for some cool things.
Dealing with spam bots takes a little work, but google has plenty of help
(though you might want to keep them. Sometimes they're hilarious). FTP it
over to your web host and go through the install.php script to get it
going. It's mostly point-and-click (your web host does have PHP on board,
 right?).

I peeked through some of the source on the pages. There are a TON of
lines dedicated to style. Have you considered referencing a style sheet?
You can do a lot with CSS, and it's a massive time saver for changes across
multiple pages. I didn't use a CMS for my site (addicted to rolling my own)
and found that formatting with style sheets is actually pretty easy. You
can check out mine if you want an example of what they look like
http://whoarethedead.com/WATD.css. Basically, I define classes in CSS
and then identify div blocks with those classes. Ultimately, it's the
same as what most toolkits would do. As long as you have a good reference
guide, you should be able to do just about anything.

And my (from limited experience) SEO info-nuggets:

1- Good tags, clear formatting, etc. are nice, but they guarantee nothing.
2- Without regularly updated content, you'll get deindexed. Heed the
words of E-40 and Scrape! Scrape! Scrape!
3- Back-links. Get them. Do whatever it takes that is still
 cost-effective.
4- Rate of change in traffic is more important than total rate (think
 trending).

Probably not as tasty as chicken-nuggets, but born from experience. If
you get the first 3 locked in, you might look into traffic sharing, buying
out competing niche-sites and such. Good luck!

Mike,

If you have GoDaddy, they provide Drupal, WordPress, Joomla, Wiki, and a
eCommerce cart that you can install at the touch of a button.

Actually, Googling for free web forum template or free blog css
template will turn up many thousands that you can use within KompoZer.
These templates usually consists of a group of files, a set of images to
provide some toning backgrounds and borders, an HTML file (sometimes XHTML)
that provides some dummy content, and a CSS file that controls the
appearance of the content and use of the images. Example:
http://www.free-css.com/free-css-templates/page133/blogger.php

Of course, since these are just creating HTML/CSS, you can also move to a
more comprehensive free website maker like: http://www.opendesigns.org/
BTW, does your hosting site offer php? MySQL? For many CMS like Drupal or
Wordpress, you need MySQL/php. PHP CMS with flat file databases (where you
don't need MySQL) include:

Pivot (http://www.pivotlog.net/):
SkyBlueCanvas Lightweight CMS (http://www.skybluecanvas.com/)
Pluck (http://www.pluck-cms.org/)
RazorCMS (http://www.razorcms.co.uk/)

I believe that the get rich quick email me for the link is terribly ill
conceived. You would do better advertising your ability to make some
websites around your local area and on your page. That link makes you look
scammy.

Besides, I will give everyone a good Work From Home link right now:
http://icanworkfromhometo.blogspot.com/2007/11/teletech-or-hire-point-customer-service.html

things but I don't have any money. The last 4 bucks in my checking account
went to go daddy to pay for a domain that I can hopefully make some money
with :) (onlineworkfinder.us) This is the page I'm going to put my ad on.

I was thinking that making it real simple without all the hoopla that the
scam sites usually have would be the best idea.

Whatever such you intend for them to do once there, you first
need to drive people there, meaning you need to be found, and
 not immediately closed as irrelevant.

Pick out a theme, just don't go crazy and make it myspace-ish
with nauseating graphics everywhere. Then look up search
engine optimization and dig to get it out there.

Pretty good advice there. SEO: make sure the meta tags for description and
keywords are correct/relevant, make sure you're using h1 appropriately, make
sure robots.txt allows various search engines to look at your site.

Also, don't go overboard on trying to be (like this on Spacebook!)
hyper-relevant and/or more (+1 this on Googel!) socially connected than (bleat
this!) every other site since it can get (crow202Spot this!) annoying. Also
also, if you have popup, popunder, sound-using, or screen-taking-over ads on
your site, people will want to hunt you down and beat you with a bag of
doorknobs instead of spending time at your site.

Tough part is giving someone a reason to stay around your site - one
page won't do that, let alone sell a cause.

Getting people to visit one page isn't insanely difficult. Getting people to
*explore* a site or visit it regularly seems to require one or more of:

* regularly updated interesting text or images
* a reasonably active user community that posts comments and aren't all
complete raving jerks
* a product for sale that people actually want
* pictures of nearly-naked cute people

...at least that's what I've seen.

You know, I wanted to find a work-from-home job so badly that I followed

a web page that really does give work-from-home job opportunities. These
jobs range from computer programmers to cartoon artists; from telephone

So, simply pay $5.00 via paypal to havens.business@gmail.com and I'll

 Mike here,

You know, I wanted to find a work-from-home job so badly that I followed
many leads and I got scammed many times. Good news though! I finally found
a web page that really does give work-from-home job opportunities. These
jobs range from computer programmers to cartoon artists; from telephone
interviewers to social workers; from proofreaders to typists. A great
number of other opportunities are also at this site just awaiting an
applicant. I feel as if I should just give the webpage to you but I also
feel I've been scammed so often that I need to recoup some of my losses.
So, simply pay $5.00 via paypal to havens.business@gmail.com and I'll
send you the site. True, you could find it on your own; but I never did in
the years of my search. I had to pay substantially more than the five I'm
asking for... but what I did pay for is (in my opinion) unreasonable. I
figure $5 is a fair price... not to much but perhaps too little. However, I
know that if you are unemployed you are watching every penny so I
definately don't want to hurt you. In fact, the site itself is free (at
least it was when I used it) so there will be no further charges. If you
don't have a paypal account you can sign
 uphttps://www.paypal.com/us/cgi-bin/webscr?cmd=_flowSESSION=yw2jOYFV_cSZwqueJhvzR_Pm5kfdzbo39DamN9SzvU4NEakJPc3XBYVP_Hidispatch=5885d80a13c0db1f8e263663d3faee8d4026841ac68a446f69dad17fb2afeca3for
it for free and then link it to a bank account or a credit card. So the
excuse that you don't have a paypal account is a lame excuse.

 Have a good day ya-all!

Mike,

I believe the foundation of PLUG is the notion that members of the Plug
community give freely to each other as they can. For example, a member who
has many years of experience as a Linux sysadmin making 6 figures does not
ask a poster to donate $5 to them for solid advice on how to fix the
poster's problem. They give back to the community because they know someday
they will be the poster in need of assistance one day. Or, they give out of
the need to support this community out of the goodness of their heart.
With that said, I find your proposed post to be offensive and not at all
in the spirit of this community.

I also agree with Mike Bydalek that your proposed post is not even close to
the stated purpose of this forum -
We talk about the state of GNU/Linux, what we've recently done with
GNU/Linux, share problems and create solutions. (
http://plug.phoenix.az.us/aboutplug.html)

My 2 cents.

Hi Mike,

You may be onto something.  My suggestion is to use a blog like WordPress.
Lots of plugins and lots less programming.  You will tire at some point dealing
with static pages.

WordPress was made for what you are trying to do.  Or a forum might be good.
I'd look at WordPress.  Not WprdPress.com.  Host your own on your domain.

2012-02-15 Thread Michael Butash
Tend to agree, aside from the technical aspect of you getting the site
up (congrats!), content is highly suggestive, and it's probably not the
right forum for how to make my webpage pretty and saleable.

There are plenty of sites that help you with design, but I'd suggest
looking at wordpress or something as a cms, pick a theme (or pay for a
nice pro one), then add content. You know what _good_ websites look
like - not that. You need format, imagery, some moderately appeasing
visuals that make me somehow feel you're not a 5th grader or a nigerian
scammer that made a site with m$ frontpage '98 to exploit l-users. I
can set up web servers all day, but my sense of aesthetics are terrible
(why I'm an engineer and not a graphic designer), so I don't dare bother
making an actual website. I'd say get some professional design help if
you're trying to make cash at this.

Seeing the page, I feel like if I were on windoze, I'd be infected by
half a dozen worms by now. No offence, just being honest.

WordPress is a Content Management System (CMS).  Written in PHP and runs just
right on a LAMP server.  Your host may provide an auto install script called
Fantastico that will aid you in installing WordPress.

WordPress is used for what you are trying to do.  A forum would be a separate
piece of software.

Look for free WordPress templates.  There are thousands for free.  I would
suggest taking some time and look at your options.

If your site takes off and you build it wrong, you will pay later.

Do some research.  Install WordPress and look at the free templates.

This is not a decision you can make in a couple hours.

well as plone. i have liked them all.

in your case i think a simple blog style of entry, main landing page
taking about what your core purpose is, then a forum for others to share
and integrate.

warning if you set up a forum you will need to police it pretty heavily.

As for the page you are talking about i would shy away form adding that to
the site just yet, but instead include a simple donation area. then gather
resources related to the core purpose of your site.

I would start with a core purpose and evolve from there.. find out what you
want it to do then move in that direction. if you build a user-base ads and
the like can help pay for it. but you have to give them something to build
credibility. but if you pop up a link offering work from home jobs then ask
money for it it will turn people off and make people think its
an advertising site from the get rich quick scams.

does that make sense?

i would also consider changing the backgrounds. they make my eyes hurt ;-)

Re: I need opinions.

2012-02-15 Thread Michael Butash
Exactly, something basic like a blog, about the author, some links to
relevant things, thoughts, etc. Then maybe a sales pitch. Ideally
you'd use seo to spam, er guide people to your page, pitch em, have them
click on a paypal link or some such, auth, and profit. Whatever such
you intend for them to do once there, you first need to drive people
there, meaning you need to be found, and not immediately closed as
irrelevant. These will give you a somewhat secure and well documented
way to make a basic, manageable, and attractive site.

Wordpress, joomla, etc all have a certain amount of presentation that
makes your site relevant to google robots with keywords, or can be made
to. I don't deal with that end of it, but others here can speak to them
individually. Pick out a theme, just don't go crazy and make it
myspace-ish with nauseating graphics everywhere. Then look up search
engine optimization and dig to get it out there.

What you want in your cms is a wealth of community (support) and
plugins/modules in whatever you choose, and all aforementioned software
have plenty of them. There are also hosted solutions of most of them
canned to minimize the sysadmin involved - upload a theme and content,
off you go.

Tough part is giving someone a reason to stay around your site - one
page won't do that, let alone sell a cause.

Look for free WordPress templates. There are thousands for free. I would
suggest taking some time and look at your options.

If your site takes off and you build it wrong, you will pay later.

Do some research. Install WordPress and look at the free templates.

This is not a decision you can make in a couple hours.

wordpress won't work (I don't think)
does anyone know of a forum template for kompozer that doesn't cost
anything? Believe me. if I had any money I would be happy to pay
for things but I don't have any money. The last 4 bucks in my
checking account went to go daddy to pay for a domain that I can
hopefully make some money with :) (onlineworkfinder.us
http://onlineworkfinder.us) This is the page I'm going to put my
ad on.

I was thinking that making it real simple without all the hoopla
that the scam sites usually have would be the best idea.
